Modern society suffers from a systematic confusion of appearance and reality, in which the curated digital identity replaces the true self and thereby undermines the ethical foundation of the community.
The essential ethical problem here is not that someone pays attention to their appearance and their public image, but that they use the image as a substitute.
The text uses the Aesopian fable motif of the donkey in the lion's skin to analyse the phenomenon of modern hypocrisy and identity construction. It argues that external disguise cannot change the inner essence and that the truth inevitably comes to light through one's own behaviour and language. The author refers to the role of philosophers, psychologists, and theologians as 'foxes' who see through these deceptions through anthropological knowledge. A central reference to the present is the critique of social media, which serve as tools for the careful distortion of reality and for replacing the true self with a curated image. The text emphasises that the mere cultivation of one's image would be ethically unproblematic, but that it becomes the sin of deception when it replaces what is essential. It calls for trusting in critical thinking and the recognition of one's own true nature, rather than hiding behind digital masks.

The lion's skin fell and the donkey's bray was heard
Ethics and the Modern Human

Apostolos Nikolaïdis, Honorary Professor of the University of Athens, President of the Institute "Saint Maximus the Confessor"
The desire of some to deliberately appear different from what they actually are constitutes a time-honored habit, which Aesop could not overlook, if we take into account one of his related fables, in which once again a donkey takes center stage, one that decided to appear as a lion. The fable, in paraphrase, reads as follows:
Once upon a time there was a donkey. "I must do something too so that they notice me," he kept saying and repeating. One day, while he found himself in the forest, he saw a lion's skin on the ground. This is it, the donkey thought with joy. I have finally found my fortune. Out with the melancholy. "Now I will become beautiful too, and everyone will give me importance and will consider me a great one." So he immediately puts on the lion's skin, and there he is now transformed into a beautiful and large lion. Who would have imagined that a donkey was hidden inside the hide! He now runs through the forest, chases the animals, frightens them, and they take to their heels, because they had never seen a larger and wilder lion before. Only a fox confronted him and did not move from her position. The fake lion stopped, looked at her angrily, brayed like a donkey and said to her: "I will eat you! Are you not afraid of me?"
"Why should I be afraid of you?" the fox says to him quietly. "Do you think I did not understand from your voice who you are? You are not a lion, you are a donkey. And a donkey can never eat a fox."
A fable indeed, but a treasure of meanings. We record a few of them:
- The motives for the external transformation of someone are numerous. a) to conceal his true character, b) to display abilities he does not have, c) to overcome feelings of inferiority by seeking strength, independence, or a leadership presence, d) to cover natural weaknesses in dealing with inherent problems, e) to distance psychological insecurities, f) to provoke and attract attention when others ignore him, g) to identify with and embody ideas and models that he adores but is unable to imitate in practice, h) to express aspects of his identity that are not apparent and that he does not dare to do in practice, i) to perform actions he would not dare to do in normal circumstances, as happens mainly in mass carnival and masquerade events.
- The "lionhood" is not an end in itself, which is why it is not ethically evaluated, but a means, and indeed an unethical means due to the way it is used, between unethical motives and an unethical purpose, since it offends the truth and is used for the deception, pretense, and misdirection of others.
- The endeavor is doomed to failure for the following reasons:
Appearance does not change essence, the seeming is not identical with the being. Through pretense one does not acquire qualities that by nature and by the cultivation of his character he cannot have. The genuine and authentic does not need pretense to show his worth, because this is evident in itself. The lion, for example, does not need to do and prove that he is a lion, since he is one. This means that pretense in itself betrays the motive of deception.
Pretense does not ensure permanence but has an expiration date. Sooner or later the "lionhood" will fall and the donkey will be revealed. Thus one may deceive some, but soon the reality will be revealed.
The revelation does not always come from others but from oneself, as exactly happened in the fable. One is mainly betrayed by his speech, which, no matter how much effort is made at self-control, becomes declarative of the truth, since contradictions are difficult to avoid. Speech that has as its background the way we think and as its field of unfolding the way we behave.
More revealing of the truth is the boasting, which aims at creating impressions, because one easily discerns the crisis of values, the insecurity, and above all the inadequacy. Thus some uneducated people, who pass themselves off as great through the boasting they display, are exposed by their own garrulousness. Indeed, this is one of the few times that garrulousness is charged positively and functions as a means for a good purpose. When someone talks too much, and especially ostentatiously, inevitably words will slip out that unmask and reveal what is truly hidden beneath the "lion's skin."
The role of the fox is also significant in the revelation of the truth. It is not carried away by what it hears nor by superficial observations, but it investigates and reaches a diagnosis, exposing the deception. Those who today assume the role of the fox are the philosophers, the psychologists, the sociologists, but above all the theologians, with their deep and comprehensive anthropological knowledge, having as their starting point the creation of man in the image of God, an image that was darkened after the sin, when the "lion's skin" was invented, which in its original form was identical to the fig leaf.
The myth of Aesop has timeless value and is highly topical, because it marks the dominant role of the virtual reality, through which power, glory, and charm are projected. The role of social media networks is significant in our days in the deliberate and scientifically grounded distortion of reality, the methodical construction of an image with a fragmentary presentation of only those elements that show someone as successful, beautiful, strong, and happy. This is the digital projection of a virtual identity, a digital mask, with a spurious prestige, based on a contrived appearance, an artful projection of wealth, titles, and political or social positions, with the aim of the best possible management of impressions, so that the desired outcome may come, namely sometimes admiration and social acceptance and sometimes the deception of persons who are content with the image and renounce the necessary tool for our time, critical thinking. The substantial ethical issue at hand is not that someone takes care of his appearance and his public image, but that he uses the image as a substitute.
