The Sura al-Fatiha is the covenant between human being and God, in which the human being affirms their exclusive servitude and asks for guidance on the straight path.

The Sura Fatiha is at the same time a covenant between the creature and its Creator. The core of this covenant is the verse: "iyyāke naʿbudu we iyyāke nestaʿīn" / which means, O Allah! We worship You alone and from You alone we ask for help.

The text is a Friday sermon of the DITIB that presents the Sura al-Fatiha as the first sura of the Quran and as the introduction and summary of the Quran. It is described as central to the prayer, since without its recitation the prayer is not valid. The sermon explains the meaning of the individual verses: the praise of God, his mercy, his sovereignty on the Day of Judgment, the exclusive worship, and the supplication for the straight path. The sura is described as a covenant between creature and Creator, the core of which is exclusive servitude and asking for help from God. The last verses are interpreted as supplications for guidance on the path of the prophets and the righteous, and for preservation from the path of the rejected and the astray. The text is addressed to the congregation and encourages the recitation and understanding of the sura in prayer.

Essence of the Quran: The Sura al-Fatiha (06.09.2024) In our Friday sermon today, I would like to address the fifth Sura in the order of revelation, the Fatiha. Fatiha means “beginning” and “introduction.” Since it is the first Sura of the Quran and, so to speak, its preface and its summary, it has received this name. According to the Hadith of our Prophet (s), “The prayer of the one who does not recite the Fatiha is not valid”1, the Fatiha is a Sura that we must recite in our prayers. Therefore, we should master both its recitation and its meaning. We begin the Sura with the Besmele, that is, with the protecting and merciful name of Allah, by saying “Bismillahi r-rahmāni r-rahīm.” This reminds us that we must carry out our daily affairs with sincerity, care, and mercy. With the statement “Elhamdu lillāhi rabbi l ʿālemīn,” we express that praise belongs solely to the exalted Allah, as He has created everything in a perfect manner. We remember that the exalted Allah is not only the Creator, Owner, and Educator of Muslims, but of all people and creatures. Through this, we feel deep within ourselves that no one is alone or masterless. “Er-rahmāni r-rahīm.” Our Creator is the Merciful, the boundlessly Merciful. His mercy encompasses all people and living beings.2 Our Creator is the Merciful. His mercy is also manifested in His actions. On the Day of Judgment, He will separate the good people from the evil people.3 His mercy is granted to those who have believed in Him and performed good deeds. The exalted Allah is also “māliki yewmi d-din,” the Ruler on the Day of Judgment,4 on which He alone will judge, when no one can be of use to another. My brothers and sisters! The Sura Fatiha is at the same time a covenant between the creature and its Creator. The core of this covenant is the verse: “iyyāke naʿbudu we iyyāke nestaʿīn” / which means, O Allah! We worship You alone and from You alone we ask for help.” Every time we recite this verse, we give Allah our following word: “O Allah, I offer my servitude only to You. O Allah, I perform my acts of worship only for Your pleasure. I ask only You, and no one else, for help that only You can provide. I open my heart only to You, I share my worries only with You, and I present my wishes only before You.” The last verses of the Sura Fatiha are supplications. With “ihdina s-sirāṯa l-mustaqīm,” the human being asks his boundlessly merciful Creator for the following: “O Allah! Guide us to the straight path! Accept us onto the straight path! Always accept us as travelers on this path! Illuminate our path! Be for us a guide on this path! “Ṣiraṭa llaḏīna enʿamte aleyhim.” Guide us to the path of the Prophets to whom You have granted beautiful gifts. Do not let us be separated from the path of the Prophets, O Allah! Guide us to the path of Your sincere servants, whose character was a unity of word and deed. Grant us such persons as companions on the way, O Allah! Guide us to the path of those righteous ones who devote their existence to Your path and perform useful and beautiful deeds, O Allah!5 “Ġayri l-maġḍūbi ʿaleyhim we la d-dāllīn.” Do not guide us to the path of those against whom You have become angry, nor to the path of those who have gone astray! Protect us from the path of those who have missed their way, drifted onto false paths, or deviated from their route, O Allah! Amen! Amin!
