Evangelism must move from a fear-driven conversion strategy to a humble, experience-based encounter with God that respects the dignity and freedom of the individual.
This is an abuse of the human person, where many people were deeply wounded in their childhood. And they still have to deal with it to this day.
The text analyzes the historical and personal development of evangelism in the Kreuzkirche Mainz, with two hosts describing different experiences. Sigrid de Vries describes her childhood experience as 'spiritual abuse,' marked by fear of hell and pressure to convert. Reina de Vries recalls a positive encounter at a large event, which she understood as an invitation from God. The moderator adds his own experience of a passive but existential encounter with God around a campfire, which took place without direct pressure. The discussion criticizes forms of proclamation that are based on fear and pressure to conform, and advocates for an attitude of humility and listening. It is emphasized that God reveals himself without people being allowed to force this through pressure. The core message is that evangelism today is to be understood as service to the freedom of the other and as a response to God's initiative, not as control.

Hello, and it is wonderful that you are here again with us at Schwarzbrot. This is the second part of our series on the topic of Mission, Evangelism, and Diaconia here at our Kreuzkirche. But you are also welcome to take these impulses with you as you go out into the world. Last time we talked about missions and about how one might understand it differently than it has often been understood. And today we want to look at an aspect of mission, namely evangelism, which is talking about God. And for that, I have brought two very competent people here. Who are you? I am Sigrid de Vries. And I am Reina de Vries. We experienced our calling to full-time ministry together a very long time ago. And we come from very, very strongly Christian congregations. Therefore, this topic is, personally for me, very, very important, because I absolutely do not want to return evangelism to how it was in the past. It is similar for me. Even though we have both experienced a very different history of impact, perhaps we will have time later to tell a little about that and to include you all in it. I knew throughout my entire ministry, my whole years of service, what I did not want. But I have always worked very hard on it. How do I want to do it differently? And I am still working on that to some extent today. Because it is not quite so simple, as we will certainly show. Yes. You just said that you come from a certain direction that you do not want to return to. What was that? What was evangelism like before? I will simply tell you my experience. It was a tent evangelism. I was just under nine years old. Of course, we were there on Sunday evenings. And the evangelist then stood at the front with great pathos and said, the Lord calls, and he calls a maximum of three times, and it can become too late. And even if you later want to come to him, then it is too late and you can no longer come to him. And I knew, if one cannot come to the Lord, as small as I was, then hell and the devil are waiting for one. And hell and the devil was simply that which put me, as a small child, under very, very strong pressure already. That was actually, little by little, a proper year older than Jesus. And so I, being smaller, then ran to the front, to show that I want to come to God. And basically two weeks later I was then baptized as a child. That is how I want to see it today. And I experienced a fear-based conversion and an infant baptism. Perhaps I should say what was like in the parental home, because you are not currently shaped by that. Yes, my father was already a pastor. My grandfather was a pastor. And my father represented this inward direction, but much worse, he was already an uncle on the day. He embraced this direction much more strongly. So you basically had no choice but to convert? No, because hell was lurking. In that moment, I had thought, he has already called me at least twice. Then I have no other choice. If I do not want to end up in hell, then the devil, then I must now go to the front. And so you experienced talking about God? Yes. One must simply add to that, I am talking today about spiritual abuse. This is an abuse of the person, where truly many people, children, were deeply hurt. And still deal with it to this day. I have experienced this a lot in my counseling work, such people who did not receive such proclamations. And are still stuck with it to this day. Yes. And how was it for you? You also came to faith through an evangelism event. Yes, yes, I stumbled upon it. And at a large crusade, the name was the Machine-Gun Church. Germany was called that. I did not experience it so much as a machine-gun. This proclamation was not fear-inducing for me. I
I, too, grew up in the unity of a Christian home. My ancestors were already in the Baptist congregation. I sang in Kohl at the age of 14. It was a large Kohl, a Kohl of 1,000 men. At Euro 70 in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. Willi Rehm came to Germany for a whole week. We say in Kohl. And then came that evening of the call. Next to me sat the entire Fetter, the whole kinship, in the tenor, in the soprano, etc. And I had to stand up now, go to the front. That was how it was. Whoever wanted to be converted now had to go to the front. I know, he still preaches today on Revelation 3:20. He stands here at the door and knocks. And to whoever opens to him, I will enter and eat with him the communion. That was a beautiful image. And I knew exactly, I want that. I did not want the faith of my parents. I did not want that. Because I experienced it in many places as hypocritical and as inauthentic. But this Jesus, whom he described in the sermon and then stood before my heart here, and who was again pure to me. I took that. So I already knew very well back then to say, I want this and I do not want that. Yes. And you have thus experienced different forms of evangelization. A very abusive form and a very positive, positively attended form. And actually, from the perspective of outside observers, it probably does not differ that much. But it is very different. The spirit was very different, I felt. And I experienced a third form of evangelization. Many years after you, probably, that I was in a family and in a youth group of a church and was not a believer and was simply allowed to be there, allowed to participate. And in principle, I heard of God on the periphery. And they talked about God. This family talked about God. In retrospect, I would criticize much of what they said. And also what happened in this youth group, I would criticize very, very much. But that came later, after my conversion. My conversion, before that, I was involved. And because God also revealed himself to me in the waiting, but I was involved. The possibilities were created and it was... It was not pressed upon me, but I was simply allowed to be there. And that was the form of evangelization that I experienced. Now come short follow-up questions. You say, God revealed himself. Yes. Let us become concrete. Yes, that is as always. I was involved in this youth group and we had a fire on the beach, such a campfire. And at that point in time I was very militant, atheistic, I would say. But I was attached to this youth group. It was the second week that I was there. It was quite... I probably would not have gone there much longer. And they sat around this fire and sang their little songs, which we today also know as worship. I wanted a few... 15 years ago or so. And I was on the edge and was so... Eventually, it will surely stop again, then we can talk normally with each other again. And it was just... Because, on the edge, a little piece away from them, suddenly God was behind me. Behind you. Yes. And I knew... I can never again not know since that moment that God exists. And that changes everything. That changed everything in one moment. But actually no human was involved. The possibilities were perhaps created by the fact that I was in this group, above all, I had people afterwards whom I could approach, who told me a lot of nonsense, but who also told me a lot upon which I still build today. So it was a double-edged sword. But the circumstance was created. And I had at that moment the possibility to perceive that God exists. I find that interesting. Because it was thus no cognitive, rational persuasion work on you. Yes. It was a
The felt impression that you experienced very concretely. And I am actually a very cognitive person. My way of believing is theology. So truly the science of thinking, of pondering deeply, even of the questions. But in that moment, that was not the thing at all. And it was not because someone had talked me into it. The fear that I also experienced in that congregation, which cannot be concealed, came later, came in the way they then tried to raise me as a Christian. But in that, there was actually no fear. Or perhaps there was, because if you do not know who God is, and I had no idea who God is. All I knew was that God is perfect. And I am not. What would have caused fear, I would say. What for? But that was not the main thing. But you had this foundational experience. There, God knew that you needed it, so that you could then gradually build upon it. Yes. And you will not let anyone take it away from you, either. Yes. God revealed Himself to me, inwardly, regardless of what anyone later said about me. And people said many things about me. Or about people like me. Regardless of what anyone said, God, they could not take that away from me. I had His "Yes" to you. Exactly. Would you say that with this experience, God said a "Yes" to me? Would you call this moment a conversion? In a certain way. It is, so if not this moment, then which one, because the question of whether God exists no longer arose for me afterwards. Only cognitively, but not emotionally. Then we perhaps need to insert what conversion actually means. Metanoia, Greek, is the turning, the correction of my life path. Or the change from what I was before, if I am no longer that, values changing. Everything falls into this concept of metanoia. Is something like that then in the FBOR a kind of change of direction? In my thinking, regarding God, yes, in that moment. And then the search began. What is it that God wants, what does God want from me? And then the problems also arose, because I asked these questions to very, very, very, very, very conservative Christians. They, namely, had all the answers to the questions. They had an answer to every question. And even not ordered on the basis of existence, probably already. And some of these answers, for example, "God loves you, just as you are," was very good for me. Because that was an experience I had not had before, that I am loved as I am. The other side of the coin is that it was also, just as you are. I am queer, do you go to hell? No. So it was this dichotomy. Was that thought in the group? Exactly, that was thought. They did not know that I was queer. That means, they did not specifically apply it to me. Therefore, I always received this encouragement. God loves you, just as you are. At the same time, however, they spoke about people like me. In the sense that God cannot love you. And God, fortunately, kept me very much in this love. Thank God, because for this person, what else is there, then only hell remains. Yes. Hell is what was never actively threatened, because they did not know, but passively it was very present. So I experienced a bit of both. On one hand, the very positive encouragement, on the other hand, the very negative, very frightening. Exactly. Yes, metanoia, turning. That is a profoundly biblical term, by the way, also a term that is already in the Old Testament. That is, that in the turning there is a turning back to God. That is... In Hebrew, shuv was called that. Yes. And that is a turning to the God of justice, to justice among people. Yes. Yes, and Amos, the social criticism, yes. I can no longer bear your worship services, if you [are] the rich
They become richer and the poor become poorer. That is quite current, isn't it? Yes. And they already existed in the Alpine period. And I mean, even right at the beginning, I don't know if this is the word used to describe him, but he turns away when one sees this text; he turns away. And God says, why do you turn away? And one cannot in the evening tell the story, which represents a fundamental change in humanity, a change against the weak, a change away from God, and turning away from God is the essential thing that brings evil. That brings the problem. I always wanted to equate turning away from God with turning away from people. Yes, and to turn towards possessing, towards making wealth. Towards doing it oneself. And that was much abused when you turn away, but the story is not presented that way. Exactly, belonging to our experience is also that, with our conversion it was now quite clear what I as a Christian may no longer do: may not smoke, may not drink, may not go to a tavern, but may not go to the cinema. That was for us. The fine thing that moves to dance. No sex before marriage. That was already quite clear in the circles we moved in. Before, after must become quite distinct and concrete. And from this story we also come; we must look, this is something terribly frightening, because if I then still went, that is now with me. Yes. And also the question: is a conversion a one-time thing or is it a recurring thing? That all plays into it. Would I lose my conversion or also my baptism? And if I now again do things that actually may not be done according to the list? That are not to be done. And over the years I have come to greatly appreciate Paul, how he speaks about it, saying that he does not do everything right. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak; the colloquial saying already fits, but that is what he means. That he believes in God, that he is on the way for God, that he has encountered Jesus, he believes that and nevertheless he does not do everything right. And at the same time Paul is also someone who strongly walks this path from this legality, I would almost say, from this, if you do that, then this inference; that is hardly present in Paul, but in many places he is like this: if that causes you to distance yourself from God, that you look away from God, then do not do that. But if that does not influence your relationship with God, offerings, meat, eating in his case, for example feast days, these things, if that does not impair your relationship with God, then everything is permitted. I really believe, yes, thank God, that you were allowed to find yourself over the years, over the years, and I simply want to spare more people from having to go through this terrible preliminary phase. I do observe that congregations that work with this pressure grow faster, but I am certain that then also many of the Christians, who, yes, who are there, also need many, many years of processing or perhaps never come to a settled and joyful praise. In today's service it was said that a colon is a double colon; that is where it actually begins; it is not a full stop, but it is a colon, that is where it actually begins. The first thesis of Martin Luther was that the Christian life is a daily repentance. That means, that belongs to it, with the certainty, however, that I am simply a child of God loved by God, by Christ. That must be the foundation. Perhaps it would be helpful at this point to briefly take this quick tour through church history, because conversion already exists in the Bible, yes, the guests, people who came to faith, Acts 2:42, they came together daily, celebrated the Lord's Supper, that
means that they shared the evening meal together, taught, and so on, and people came daily, because they were convinced by the lifestyle of these first Christians, who lived completely differently, with values that went back to Christ, and that was convincing. We must keep this in mind in the background, because this is something where I think we absolutely must return to. Sharing life, sharing life, being enthusiastic about what one does, and taking that as the basis of one’s existence. That means, not doing everything right. In the 9th chapter, which we must also know, repentance refers to a true turning, a turning away from idols. It was a conversion to Jesus Christ, but also a turning away from idolatry. Is it still so today? Is it in certain senses still so today, if it is also, I would have said, named in the proclamation, who comes over. But that was very clear in the 1st century. And then in the 4th century, state Christianity, the Constantinian shift, suddenly everyone in the Roman Empire was Christian. One was practically born as a Christian. If I proclaim, in which direction am I actually proclaiming, because I am addressing Christians who are perimurt Christians. Can one still evangelize there? Yes, indeed. And if someone converted, to what did they convert? And from there, monasticism formed itself. One now converted to monasticism, that is, to a special league within Christianity. General Christianity, they take secularism, so to speak. But if I truly follow Christ, then I must have converted to monasticism. A terrible detour in the history of Christianity, which burdens us to this day. Although much good has grown out of monasticism, much diaconal work above all. I do not want to question that at all. As far as evangelization or the order of rank was concerned, that was naturally not a step one must take. Some Christians are better than others. That is precisely what Jesus did not actually want. Exactly. Concisely to the Reformation, Martin Luther, was a monk. And he had a problematic relationship with monasticism. He did not want to go back there at all. He himself called it a detour in the history of salvation. And the core error of monasticism as works-righteousness. That is, the doing of man, in order to be saved. That means, he said, that was his very first thesis. The Christian life was for him a permanent conversion, a daily re-application to Christ. And now to the quick tour, 17th, 18th, 19th centuries, the so-called revival movements, Pietism and also Methodism, they wanted to return to the beginning, to the beginning in the 9th chapter of the Testament. They wanted to turn people from their wrong path to the right path. And the sign of that is conversion. And here baptism recedes into the background. They said, conversion is the sign for true Christian being. And that looks like this: if you have converted, a turning away from worldly life follows behind you. It went so far that at that time no one was allowed to ride the railway. He was dismissed from the congregation. And God willed that we ride the railway, because he has given us wheels. Exactly, I have heard it blocked, so that I can hollow myself. That then led to the choir’s dimensions. And in Methodism, one was called to the front. That is, a call to conversion, so one was called to the front onto a penitent’s bench. And there one was then musically, and the one who did that was then a Christian. And that went so far that in the Brethren Communities, baptism no longer meant membership in the congregation, but that participation in the evening meal did. If you laid a real, good Christian testimony, that, you were admitted to the evening meal. That was the admission to the congregation’s membership. And then it is these people who decide what a good Christian is. Exactly that. You could also be excluded from the evening meal. Exactly. And then it is no longer God who decides. Then it is simply no longer
this, you are simply a God-loved child, just as you are. And God wants to negotiate with you about what makes your life better and how you can follow him better, and what also disturbs your relationship with him; otherwise, it is from the beginning, from the powerful ones. And there we are again at questions of power. And questions of power are so frequent that they set a trap and a snare for what is done to the Christian. Then it is the powerful ones who decide who belongs and who does not. And then we are every time in history, in Christianity, that is no longer according to Christ. That is the result when we humans act in God’s place, when we want to act in God’s place. That has taken on those dimensions. There is still, here in the congregation in Stuttgart, it was still such that only congregations with those who then go to the Lord’s Supper. That is, a spouse who now does not belong to the congregation had to leave the assembly so that the other could take the Lord’s Supper. So not with songs, one must leave the hall to celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. Therefore, many congregations, after the service, the Lord’s Supper. So a terrible compromise solution was found there, only because one was afraid that the unholy would come into the holy area. And there is always the problem, when fear is at the day and drinks itself into

Ja. Ja. In gewisser Weise. In meinem Denken, was Gott betrifft, ja, in diesem Moment. Und dann fing die Suche an. Was ist denn das, was Gott will, denn Gott von mir? Nein.
