Truth is not a uniform concept but can be divided into various types and theories, whose understanding has shifted over the course of the history of philosophy and which are of differing relevance in everyday life, in society, and in politics.

One can, in fact, distinguish in epistemology between the content and the method of the emergence of a truth. The most important types of truth are, first of all, empirical or factual truth.

The podcast text examines the concept of truth from several perspectives: as an everyday problem, a philosophical, theological, societal, and practical topic. As current occasions, the NSDAP database of Der Spiegel, statements by Trump, the climate targets of the federal government, and deep fakes are mentioned. Philosophically, four types of truth are distinguished: empirical, logical, subjective, and normative truth. Subsequently, four major theories of truth are presented: correspondence, consensus, coherence, and pragmatic theory. The history of philosophy is described as a shift in the location of truth: from metaphysics (Aristotle, Plato) through subject philosophy (Descartes, Kant) to the philosophy of language of the twentieth century. The text deliberately remains open and does not put forward its own theory of truth, but invites reflection.

Hello and a warm welcome to Schwarzbrot, the podcast of the Kreuzkirchen Mainz. My name is Andreas, and today I am conversing with Loll on the topic of truth and types of truth. And do you really converse with me? Yes, I hope so. Yes, then... So, current occasions to reflect more fundamentally on truth are plentiful. I have looked at the headlines of articles. I checked Spiegel online yesterday, the day before yesterday. Der Spiegel is currently running a long series of articles on the topic of the NSDAP. They have put a database online where you can see which of our ancestors joined the NSDAP, when they did so, and whether anything can be inferred about their motivation from the timing or something like that. And, of course, it also always plays a role how much this truth was kept secret within families. I can imagine that there are a lot of discussions going on right now, although probably not as many as there would have been twenty years ago, when the people were still alive. Because most people are no longer alive. The question is not only what has been kept secret, but our brain is also such that over time we justify ourselves. That is, people justify themselves for what they have done. It is not only kept secret, but also hidden from themselves, so to speak, the possible motivations or whatever else lay behind it. Yes, then Trump actually says something every day that has obviously little to do with the truth. Then the federal government is currently acting as if it still wants to meet the climate targets. But where one also asks, do you know what you are talking about? Do you know that you are talking nonsense? Or do you actually think that is how it is? Yes, and then there is also a debate currently about deep fakes. So this grotesque case of what is called digital violence, for lack of a better term, in which forged videos play a role. And then we are also in the question of what is truth? Is truth what happened, or is truth what people accept as truth? Yes. So, to approach the whole topic, I thought I would explore it from different perspectives, and that in five sections. Let's see if we can get through it. First, truth as an everyday problem, which is based a little on what I just said, then there is truth as a philosophical topic and then as a theological topic. And as the fourth, I would address truth as a societal problem. And as the very last, what is truth actually from a practical perspective? So what do we actually do when we have different views on something and how do we then deal with it? Or also different memories. If one looks at that as an everyday problem, so what I just mentioned, already the different news items, all of which revolve around the topic of truth, then in everyday life or also at work, an episode just happened to me, just last week, where a boss of mine demanded not to be 100% truthful. And how one then wriggles out of such a situation, the topic of politeness naturally also always plays a role. So I can be very honest with someone, but it may be that I offend or hurt them with it. And then, of course, the huge topic at the moment is AI, artificial intelligence. There it is also often about the question that an AI, when asked, does not always tell the truth. That is then a bit euphemized as being called a hallucination. And that seems to still be a necessary consequence of the technology behind it. If I understand it correctly, the AI says what it expects, what one expects, or? Yes. And there we are, but exactly at the question, what actually is truth? So, is there one single truth? I would then directly transition to the next major point, what actually are different types of truth? So this is now the philosophy department. One can, in epistemology, distinguish between the content and the method of the emergence of a truth. The most important types of truth are first empirical or factual truth. This refers to physical reality and measurable facts. And this is verified through observation or experiments. Then there is, as the second, logical or formal truth, which is independent of our experience and results purely from the laws of logic and mathematics or definitions. So an example is a triangle, three corners. Then there is subjective truth. This refers to our individual experiences, to sensations or also to beliefs. So a banal example, the food tastes great. This actually exists only from my own perspective. And then as the last type of truth there are normative or moral truths. So value judgments or ethical principles or norms that are considered valid within a society or a group. So in that context, that lying should be wrong. That is also a truth. That is a collective truth in principle. So to speak, yes. But which does not necessarily always apply in every society. Exactly. So that is not a natural scientific truth. Normative truths ultimately always refer to a culture or a context in which they originated. However, that is where the discussion begins. So the philosophical discussion about whether normative truths really exist and are independent of humans. Or whether they are actually completely context-dependent. Okay, but let's take your example with lying. That is clearly context-dependent. So we often pretend that this is the truth, one should not do it. But then questions are asked, how are you doing, and the expected answer is good. Yes, but if one now looks at it on the philosophical level, then I would say, throughout the entire world across all cultures, children are raised by telling them, you must tell your parents the truth. And that is, in that sense, I would say, a universal norm. Because if one thinks that through to the end and allows exceptions from this universal norm. So there are always people who violate it. But if that does not hold as a norm, then it would mean that a society ultimately cannot really function. But only the society, so the norm is not, you must never lie to anyone, but you must not lie to your family, not lie to your society. Okay, we could already go into depth right away. I would first continue with the major theories of truth, so how truth is justified in the philosophical corner. There are different approaches. The first theory of truth is the so-called correspondence theory of truth. And that means, a statement is true if it exactly matches the actual facts or with objective reality. For example, if one says, the sun is hot, then that is true if the sun is hot in reality. Then there is, and now we come into the context, the consensus theory of truth, according to which truth arises as the result of a discourse-entitled exchange among people, a discourse. So true is that about which a community agrees. So in our case one could say, for all of us it is true that human rights are valid. Then there is, as the third, the coherence theory, which states that a statement is true if it is free of contradictions, so self-contained, and that it contains no statements, contradict the other statements. Yes, and the last pragmatic truth, the last theory of truth that is true, which has proven itself in practical life and is useful. So for example, you should not lie to your girlfriend. Sometimes it is like this, you have conversations with someone, and you think to yourself, we have actually clarified how things work. And a week later you have a conversation and realize, that is nothing, nothing was clarified. We were not on the same page at all. We took away something completely different from that conversation. You don't know if you know that. Yes, absolutely. And then the question is, who is right now, who has the truth, so to speak? I would say that happens in our office about two or three times a month. And it is particularly common in meetings, where everyone makes smart contributions and afterwards everyone has the impression that we have really accomplished something, and then go out and then realize after two weeks that I actually understood it completely differently. Yes, and that is why it is not so simple with consensus. I would like to stay a little longer with philosophy. I have looked at what career the concept of truth has made in the history of philosophy. There are different basic conceptions of it. And if one summarizes that very briefly and roughly, of course one could make an entire podcast series for each individual one, one could say that the history of philosophy can be described as a shift of the locus of truth. That is, what is one actually dealing with when one asks the question, what is truth? And people have answered differently at different times, because they also understood the question differently. So in metaphysics, in classical philosophy, Aristotle, Plato, truth is a correspondence to reality. That is, truth is an agreement of thinking, statements, and judgments with being. That held for a relatively long time. I would now jump ahead to the modern era. There the question has shifted. And there we come into the philosophy of the subject. So truth is more strongly tied to consciousness or to our representations or to our conditions of knowledge. And there are of course Descartes and Kant the central actors. So truth is, so to speak, certainty depending on the conditions of how we perceive our environment. There is now the question, can it accordingly deviate, depending on how I perceive the environment and you, who perceives the environment. Exactly. That is where the interesting problems begin. Then it further developed from the philosophy of the subject to the philosophy of language in the 20th century. There truth is no longer primarily examined as the relationship between consciousness and world, so, how I think of the world or how I experience it, but as the relationship of sentences and their meaning and their logical form. So truth is analyzed semantically, logically, and pragmatically. That is, the question is, what actually makes a sentence true? The conditions under which a statement is true. So there it is mainly about the property of statements within linguistic structures. And there one then, especially when interacting with different languages, comes into distress, because in certain languages certain things cannot be expressed or must be expressed differently, and then something that one cannot express in the language, but in other languages can be. Mhm. The basic question is, if I cannot express something in a language, can I think it at all? Exactly. There the philosophy of language would say, no, that is not possible. Can it then be true in another language, where one can express it, if it cannot be universally true, because the other language cannot think it? Good, question. And then I would say, from I would now present the philosophy of language for pragmatic reasons. On the one hand, there is Habermas with his theory of communicative action, which he wrote or drafted in the 1970s, and he locates truth within the horizon of communicative rationality. That is to say, anyone who makes a claim must also be able to justify it, and the justification must take place, as far as possible, within a rational discourse. So it does not depend solely on whether I am convinced that something is true, but I must succeed in convincing others of it. And only then does it, so to speak, become a universally valid truth. So truth is then not arbitrary, but is bound to reasons, justification, and mutual understanding. And one must, so to speak, argue one’s way through. Exactly. But it is indeed also possible to do so. So this is, so to speak, the central basic idea of the theory of communicative action, that mutual understanding is fundamentally possible. And postmodernism is, so to speak, the other branch of this fork. This is now a very sweeping statement, and there are certainly many experts on postmodernism who would object to this. But I would say that, in principle, postmodernism distrusts narratives, the grand stories of truth. Exactly. First of all, the grand narratives, and then indeed also the truth claims underlying them. This is described as skepticism toward the grand meta-narratives. And this then turns not only against Christianity as a grand meta-narrative, but also, in the further course, against Marxism, which is also, in a sense, a grand historical-philosophical narrative. And it continues further and turns against the notion that science is an institution that can make valid statements about the world. And the basic attitude of postmodern theorists toward the topic of truth is that truth is plural and perspectival, and is not only bound to language, but also to the position of the speaker. That is, that it depends on relations of power. And that, in the end, one cannot really say what the truth is, because everyone has their own truth. And that truth ultimately dissolves as a valid category. Yes, that one cannot negotiate it well. Because I cannot make understandable to you how my brain functions. Because our brain is what constructs the truth. And I cannot make understandable to you how my brain functions. You cannot make understandable to me how and why your brain functions, how it functions. And accordingly, we cannot exchange our truths. And therefore it is futile to discuss it. So, if one summarizes the whole thing, one could say that in antiquity and the Middle Ages one asks about the truth of being. In modern times one asks about the certainty of the subject. In the philosophy of language, then in the 20th century, one asks about the truth conditions of statements. And Habermas asks about the rational justification of a truth in discourse. And postmodernism asks about the limits and power conditions and the different perspectives of the truth claim. Something does result from that. If you ask what is, if you assume that there is a truth, and you can recognize it, and we all recognize it equally, then you discuss, then you speak with each other on a completely different basis than if you, as in the middle part, assume that there is indeed a truth, but we must talk about how we must jointly recognize it, than if you assume that truth is plural and that we cannot really exchange it. And there you run into massive problems if you are with someone who has this very traditional, self-evident picture of truth, versus someone who assumes a diversity of truths and attempt to interact with one another. Here, you run into many problems. So ultimately, one must say that in postmodern philosophy, the social contexts are so different, because societies are also increasingly differentiating, that an agreement on a common truth is actually no longer possible. And one comes to the conclusion that there are only many truths, and if there are only many truths and no one is allowed to play the judge, that is, so to speak, the ultimate truth, how does one then regulate conflicts of interest? And the necessary consequence of this worldview is actually that you can only regulate conflicts of interest through power and violence. Good, but that is also the necessary consequence, for example, from the image that there is one truth and that it must be recognizable to everyone, the world is also regulated through power. One decides what is the truth and all others must comply or perish. In the middle, where one discusses what is the truth, where one tries to investigate it jointly, there are again power relations, the decisive factor being who is heard more, who can express themselves better, who has more information available. That means, you have a power problem in all three of these definitions. Mm. There is a theoretical direction that claims that fundamentally every monotheism will end in violence, because in a monotheistic system with an absolute truth, the actors appeal to this absolute truth and then believe they may do anything in the name of this truth. I am not entirely sure whether the theory is correct. I believe, with regard to Islam, it is not correct. That is a human problem. That is a human problem. Everywhere people recognize that they can exercise power over something by declaring it as truth, they will do so. Or someone will do so. Not every person, but always a person. And Christianity is not more spared than all others, I would say, we have also experienced that. But that, too, is again not the problem of the truth or the matter itself, I would say. Rather, it is a human problem. It is how we humans deal with things. So far, we have still been in the realm of philosophy. In very fundamental considerations. The tendency there is always to slip into practice. I would like to deepen that later. A few more words on Habermas. I have read more of him again in recent weeks and months. He died in March, I believe, at the age of 96 or so. And I find the theory important and interesting because Habermas himself says that he is a materialist. He comes from the Frankfurt School, long-term from a Marxist direction. But he nevertheless, or because of that, has always had the claim with his philosophy to not only describe the world, but also to change it, as Marx said. And then, in the course of his theoretical development, he came to the realization that if we want to improve the world, we must reach an understanding. And this is possible under certain conditions, which he then designates as the necessary pragmatic preconditions of communicative action. And if one looks at these conditions, I find that super interesting, quite banal, and that is a position, that the world exists, is a condition. Yes, otherwise I don't need to start. Exactly, second, that we can recognize it, at least partially. Third, that all participants... Well, some postmodern thinkers would object. Yes. Then third, that all participants in the communication want to tell the truth and are also accountable. So as I said, these are all the conditions that, quasi, in a discourse produce truth can be made. Then, that everyone who can say something relevant on the topic can also participate in the debate, that everyone is heard. That no one is overlooked. Exactly. Then, that the better argument wins and not simply the loudest one. Exactly, power dynamics. It is important to me, prerequisites. And above all, that we make statements that claim a right to truth, even though we can be wrong. If we do not assume the existence of truth, then we can no longer refute false claims. And then everything can be true. For Habermas, there is thus still something like a reason and a truth, but this no longer lies in God or in the world of ideals, as in Greek philosophy, and also no longer only in consciousness, as for example in Kant’s subject philosophy, but a truth arises for Habermas precisely in communicative action. And someone has written a summary: the idea of objective truth is a necessary fiction for liberal democracies. That is, for democracies to function, for life itself to function, we must assume that there is such a thing as truth, even if we are not 100% certain. And the exciting thing, I find, is that Habermas, the old materialist, at the end of his life gives a two-volume work on truth again. And that is, that in the time when one has written a two-volume history of philosophy, 1700 pages. As one does when one has nothing better to do. Yes, he said he simply wanted to read the classics again. And that is what came out of it. Okay. So the work is also called a History of Philosophy. The interesting thing about his history of philosophy are the subtitles. The general theme, because it is about faith and knowledge there. It is once about the Western constellation of faith and knowledge. And in the second volume it is called reasonable freedom, traces of the discourse on faith and knowledge. And the interesting thing is precisely that he presents the search for truth as a confrontation between faith and knowledge. Hmm. Now I have thought, if we move on to theology. So we have now, so to speak, considered a sequence of concepts

Ja. In jeder Gesellschaft. Genau. Genau. Da ergibt sich ja was draus. In sehr grundsätzlichen Überlegungen.
