Doubt in faith is not the same as unbelief; those who distinguish their doubts and trust in God can be led by him to a deeper, firmer faith.

I believe that there is still more, that God still has more in store for me, that he can lead me to new faith. And that is what we want to do in today's sermon. We want to address our doubt as well and look at what it has to do with God and how we can gradually get rid of these doubts and become more like Jesus and believe more.

The text is a sermon that, on the occasion of Ascension Day, does not primarily deal with the Ascension itself, but takes up the statement in Matthew 28:17 that some of the disciples still doubted even after the Resurrection and the encounter with Jesus. The speaker presents four types of doubt: unwarranted unbelief, anxiety-driven doubt, seeking doubt, and incomprehensible doubt. Using the example of the Pharisees, unbelief is described as stubbornness that does not respond even to perfect answers and miracles. With the comparison to an HSV fan, it is illustrated that one can choose to commit to something regardless of arguments. The speaker shares personal doubts from childhood about the assurance of salvation and encourages the listeners not only to discuss their doubts but to actively address them and trust in God, who can lead to new faith. The text is directed at believing listeners who struggle with doubts and invites them to distinguish their doubts and continue in faith.

It is somehow so nice to be here. And perhaps you have noticed. On Thursday was Ascension Day. You probably noticed at the latest at work, when you were the only one in the workplace and no one else was there because it was a holiday. And if I am being honest, I want to think a little about this, I have already heard very many sermons in my life. But regarding Ascension Day, there were somehow not so many among them. So for Easter, I don't know how many sermons I have heard for Easter, or for Christmas, or for whatever, but for Ascension Day I have not heard so many. And perhaps it is similar for you, that you think, Ascension Day is indeed a holiday, Jesus ascends into heaven, and that was somehow it already. I have to disappoint you a little, today is indeed about Ascension Day, but somehow also not. Because I read this text and I got stuck somewhere before it actually deals with the Ascension. That means, perhaps you will have more luck next year and you hear a sermon about Ascension Day, but exactly, unfortunately it is not entirely about Ascension Day today. I have to reveal to you, I was also in Switzerland at the ICF Conference and I find it so funny, the Swiss simply have a funny name for everything. So I was there for a few years, because I learned that the Swiss do not say breakfast, but morning meal. And I actually thought that was very smart, because there is dinner, lunch, morning meal. I don't know why we came up with breakfast. In any case, they say morning meal. And the Swiss, of course, they also do not say Ascension Day, that would be far too boring, they call it Auffahrt. When I hear Auffahrt, I somehow think of the highway, I drive onto the highway. For the Swiss, Auffahrt is somehow, Jesus ascends into heaven. So somehow funny, how the Swiss tick. I am still going to say Ascension Day. And let us dive a little into the story. Actually of Ascension Day. Exactly, we have also been in the last weeks, we are very, I would say very on a good path. We also had the topic of Easter a few weeks ago, we went into the story of Easter, that Jesus died, how he was resurrected. And then Jesus was resurrected and showed himself to his disciples and preached about the Kingdom of God. We had that in the last weeks about the Kingdom of God. And what then happens, we read in Matthew 28. Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain which Jesus had told them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some still doubted. And if we would continue reading there, then Jesus would give the Great Commission, he says to his disciples, go into all the world and proclaim the gospel and then he is taken up into heaven. That means, then would be the Ascension. The problem was only, I read this verse and I got stuck on this sentence. But some still doubted. And I just take it like, hey, the disciples, they experienced how Jesus did great miracles, they experienced how Jesus really did great things. And they experienced how he died, then I think to myself, okay, maybe I would have doubted too. But then he was resurrected again, he showed himself to them, he preached about the Kingdom of God. And then they stand there directly before Jesus on this mountain and then I read there some still doubted. I just take it like, how can you doubt in this moment, when you stand directly before Jesus, I somehow do not understand at all. And yes, therefore it is not about Ascension Day, because this point addressed me so much and I asked myself, how do they come to this doubt? Because for me it is like, I already feel bad when I somehow doubt God. Although I have never seen Jesus so bodily before as I have seen, as the disciples have seen him. And I have also never heard such a bodily voice, which God has somehow let me hear. Nevertheless, I feel bad and think to myself, if the disciples should feel quite bad, even though they stand directly before Jesus and still doubt. And I have thought a little about what doubts I have had in my life. And I am there, but I remembered a story. I was still relatively young, maybe 6, 7, 8, I don't know, I already believed in Jesus and was on my way with Jesus, and I experienced that from my family. But I always wondered, do I really go to heaven? Am I somehow good enough? Is my faith good enough so that I can go to heaven? I always had the fear that I would somehow be forgotten or not taken along. And I was somehow, yes, I was not so sure, do I actually go to heaven? And I always had this fear that I would commit some sin at some point and then not be able to say to Jesus in time, Jesus, please forgive me. And exactly in that interim, Jesus comes again, and I have not asked for forgiveness. And now I am somehow there and then do not go to heaven. And then I also had a good conversation with my mom as a child, where I said, Mom, please also think of me when Jesus comes again, and take me by the hand, so that Jesus also takes me to heaven. But that was my doubt as a child. I don't know how it is with you. Do you also have such a topic, such an area, where you say, I have some doubt there. It is somehow difficult for me to believe. In these areas, it is perhaps good, and in one area, it is somehow a bit complicated. For me, this topic was somehow the assurance of salvation. Do I really go to heaven? But if I look more closely, there are also many very good reasons why one should or could doubt. So if I look a little at the world, there is so much injustice in the world. There is so much injustice in the big world, but perhaps also in the small world, in your everyday life, in your surroundings, where you think, why does that happen? That is completely unjust, God. Perhaps you also have questions about the Bible, where you think, wow, I don't know exactly. Is what the Bible says true? Is it somehow God's word or man's word? And did it really happen or not? And there, doubts arise in you somehow. Perhaps you also look at other Christians and think to yourself, if they are a new creation and on their way with God, then should I really believe, do I want that too. One sometimes has doubts. There are also subjective reasons. Perhaps you have prayed for a very long time and nothing happened. Perhaps you have prayed for a very long time that God would show himself to you, and you have not experienced him, and you are somehow disappointed, you are frustrated. There are many different kinds of reasons why one can somehow doubt. And what is very important to me for today is that we do not constantly talk about our doubts, in the sense of, I tell you my doubt and you tell me yours. And then we are in conversation and we stand there, but I say, no, I want to move on. I believe that there is still more, that God has more planned for me, that he can lead me to new faith. And that is what we want to do in the sermon today. We want to address our doubts as well and look at what it has to do with God and how we can gradually get rid of these doubts and become more like Jesus and believe more. Exactly, therefore, let us go into the different kinds of doubt. I like tables, that is all so clear. Therefore, I have brought you a beautiful table. And let us talk about four different Types. There is unbelief, fear-induced doubt, seeking doubt, and incomprehensible doubt. I believe one could somehow list another 20 types of doubt. For me, there are now four areas that can be clearly distinguished and that have occurred in my life at least from time to time. And I will start with unbelief. It is unjustified. So all the other doubts are justified. We will come back to that shortly. It is very critical. And an example of this are the Pharisees. The Pharisees talked a lot with Jesus. They were scribes in the Bible. They knew the Scripture very well. And they loved to ask questions to Jesus. They always came up with the most mean-spirited questions, any kind of trick questions for Jesus. And Jesus always answered them superbly. The problem was only that the Pharisees received the perfect answer. They also saw miracles from Jesus. And yet nothing changed in their lives. And the reason was that their doubt was unjustified. It was unbelief. No matter what Jesus said, no matter how good his answer was, no matter how good his answer was, no matter how great the miracle of Jesus was, the Pharisees continued to doubt. And I believe it is so important that we distinguish between unbelief and justified doubt. And it is good to ask oneself this question. Imagine that God would answer all your questions. Would you then believe in him? Imagine that God answers all your questions, would you then believe in him? And if your answer, or perhaps also that of a friend who does not believe, is somehow no, then one actually does not need to go any further. Because if all questions are answered and one still does not believe, then one can no longer do anything. I believe that then only prayer remains, and that God performs a miracle. But if we answer no to this question, then it is unbelief and not doubt. Because no matter what the argument is, one remains stuck in this unbelief, in this stubbornness. I will give you an example from my life. I am a very passionate HSV fan. I chose HSV when I was six or seven years old. I found the colors beautiful back then, I found the logo beautiful, and I thought it was cool that they had never been relegated. The colors are still beautiful and the logo, but they have since been relegated, and promoted again. But I am a passionate HSV fan. I have regretted it a little a few times, but I am loyal and I remain an HSV fan. Imagine you are, I don't know, maybe a Dortmund fan, a Schalke fan, a Bayern fan, whatever. And you come to me and provide many arguments for why Dortmund is much better than Hamburg. And there are probably many arguments, because they win much more often, maybe have a bigger, more beautiful stadium, I don't know, are more sympathetic, have better players, the better coach. There are quite a lot of arguments. No matter what you would say to me, I would remain an HSV fan. No matter what you would do, I remain an HSV fan. I have decided for it. I am sad every other week because of me, because they lose again. As a child, many tears were shed. But I stick with it, I am convinced of it. This is such a zone of stubborn unbelief. And if you have this unbelief, I will say, in your faith, then nothing helps. Then the arguments do not help, just like with me as an HSV fan. No arguments help. It really needs a miracle, it needs God who really makes a difference, so that I am no longer an HSV fan and so that perhaps people who have this unbelief finally receive faith. And therefore let us not deal any further with this unbelief. We now know in our school between unbelief and in the school, where we we can deal with the various doubts. One thing is very important to me, because there is a basic rule for how we deal with doubt. And we start right into John chapter 14. There Jesus says, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may be with you forever. The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, for it neither sees him nor knows him. And he remains with you and will be in you. So Jesus is speaking here about the Holy Spirit, and he says that when he has ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit will come as the Comforter. And there it is, well, the text was not written in German back then, but in Koine Greek. And it is very important to look into what the word actually means, what is actually written there. I have to dig a bit into my Latin lessons from school. I had Latin in school, and then there are such Latin words, and some, whether one has memorized them at some point, some one does not know. And the good thing is, if one does not know a word, then one can take the Stowasser. The Stowasser was not a man, but it was a dictionary where one could look up and see, okay, this word is in Latin, I will look up what it means in German. The good thing, or also the bad thing, was that there is not just one possible translation, but usually always about 5 to 10. So there are 5 to 10 words and one has to think about it. Which one do I take now? And it was such a mixture of a bit of knowledge and I guess, namely the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th word and take one of them and put it into my translation and hope that the teacher likes it. And with the Koine Greek, or is it also like that, there is a word, in this example the word Parakletos is there, and the people who translated the Bible have to then look at what it could mean in my context or what it exactly means in this sentence. And Parakletos is Koine Greek and means Lord Invoked. And that actually means, one would not have to say there, he will give you another Comforter, but he will give you a Lord Invoked. And I believe it is important to look into what the word can mean. So, I have written it down, it can mean Support, Helper, Comforter, Counselor or Supporter. And Martin Luther, I just read it aloud, translated the word with Comforter. Now let us assume, we have such an anxiety-induced doubt. We have worries, we have fears and we doubt because of that. And it is great that we have the Holy Spirit, who is the Comforter, who gives us comfort in our fear, in our worries, comfort bestows, so that we come from doubt back to God, back to new faith. Or let us assume, you perhaps have a seeking doubt, you have many questions, you somehow do not have enough answers. Then it is great that the Holy Spirit is also the Counselor. The New Living Translation translates the word with Counselor. That means, you can search with your questions, with your questions. There you can be on the way with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the perfect Counselor and he helps you in the situation that you find answers to your questions and that, yes, that your search is worthwhile in the end. Or let us assume, you perhaps have such an incomprehensible, a wavering doubt, you do not know, sometimes you believe, sometimes you rather do not believe. And it is somehow different from day to day. Then it is great that the Holy Spirit is also the Helper. In the Hope for All translation it stands Helper. That means, if you waver, then you need someone who gives you help, who gives you support again, who is there for you. And also there the Holy Spirit is the perfect weapon against doubt, because he is also the Helper. In the other translation it still stands Support or Supporter. And I I find it so cool that the Holy Spirit is present right in our doubts. And that He, when we need it, gives us help, that He gives us counsel, that He stands by us and supports us. So it is so important that you are not alone on the journey of doubting, but that you are on the journey with the Holy Spirit, that you are constantly in prayer, that you ask the Holy Spirit. Give me exactly what I need right now. Because the Holy Spirit, as we have just seen, He delivers. He is the Counselor, the Helper, the Supporter. Okay, let’s start with the first doubt. I called it fear-based doubt. And fear-based doubt is justified. It is healthy in a certain way. And an example of this is Peter on the sea. And let’s dive into the story where Peter is on the water. And Peter called out to Him, so Jesus, Lord, if it is truly You, command me to come to You on the water. Yes, come, said Jesus. And Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. And he saw the water and the high waves. He became afraid and began to sink. Lord, save me, he cried. Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. You have little faith, said Jesus. Why did you doubt? Now honestly, who among us would not have doubted there? I probably would not have gotten that far. I would have stayed sitting in the middle of the boat and somehow hoped that I would not sink in the boat. And I find it amazing that Peter takes this step, this step of faith out of this boat and can walk on the water. If You always give me the strength for it, then I can do it too. I find it so cool that Peter set out, that he dared to get out of the boat. And I believe that his doubt is, in a certain way, also okay. I believe it is good if we also sometimes have doubts out of fear, if we sometimes have fear. So such fear is sometimes also helpful, if one is now standing in front of a high cliff and then fears falling down, it is sometimes quite good to keep a little distance. Or if one perhaps has some kind of fear of a wild animal. Sometimes quite good, that protects us. But I believe, what is important, if we have such a fear-based doubt like Peter, is how we deal with it. And Peter was doing well at first. But then he no longer directed his gaze toward Jesus, but he looked so to the left, he perhaps looked so to the right, he saw this storm, these waves, and he suddenly became afraid. He no longer had his gaze on Jesus, but on his problems. And he then also remained on his forests. And he then also remained on his forests. He no longer had his gaze on Jesus, but on his problems, on his fears, on his worries. And I believe it is so important that we are also in a situation where we are afraid, that we do not constantly occupy ourselves with the worries, that we do not always try to look to the left and right, to somehow solve our problems ourselves, but that we look to Jesus. Because Jesus can solve our problems. Jesus can lead us to new heights again. He can take our fear away and give us new strength. Redirect your focus, if you are afraid, if you have a fear-based doubt. Redirect your focus to Jesus and come first to Jesus and say to Jesus how great perhaps your doubts are, what fears you have. Do not always try to solve them alone. So trust me, I have tried that myself, it is not a good idea. But take it to Jesus, tell Him how great your doubts, your fears are. And what you can perhaps do then, you can, if you again have this trust, this faith, Then you can look to the left or to the right, and you can tell your doubts and your fears, and tell your worries how great Jesus actually is. And you can proclaim that Jesus is stronger, that the doubts, the fears, the worries have no power, because Jesus is the King and because Jesus has the final say everywhere. But first look to Jesus, gain a new trust there, and then you can finish off your doubts, your worries. So direct your focus on God and His possibilities, and not on your doubts. Perhaps you have such topics, perhaps in the area of work, perhaps in the area of relationships, in the area of finances, where you notice, I don’t know how it will go on. Perhaps you have worries there, some kind of fears, and you say, it is so difficult. And what we humans also try, try to somehow solve it ourselves. I want to encourage you, try to solve it with God and bring it to Him, He can, Jesus can solve your problems, your worries. I believe it is also important that it is okay to be weak sometimes, to have fear sometimes, because the Holy Spirit is there too. We read in Romans 8, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not even know what or how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with a groaning that cannot be expressed in words. So in the case of an anxiety-induced doubt, look to Jesus, direct your gaze to Him. Perhaps you also have a seeking doubt, which is also justified, it is inquiring, and an example of this is Thomas. Exactly, we read in John 20, one of the disciples, Thomas, who was also called the Twin, had not been present when Jesus came. They told him, we have seen the Lord, but he replied, I do not believe it. Unless I see the wounds of the nails in His hands, touch them with my fingers, and put my hand into the wound in His side. I must say, I know such a doubt, and I know that God can somehow perform miracles, but I only truly believe it when I have experienced it myself. Perhaps it is the same for you, you think about the Resurrection a

Würdest du dann an ihn glauben? Egal was du machen würdest, ich bleibe HSV-Fan.
