"What Do You Believe?" with Astronaut Gerhard Thiele

The exploration of nature and the spiritual experience of space are not opposites for the believer, but complementary paths to the knowledge of the Creator and to overcoming the fear of death.

Of course, the natural sciences and spirituality or faith do not exclude each other at all. For me, they are two sides of one and the same reality.

The text documents the personal testimony of faith of astronaut Gerhard Thiele, who describes his experiences in space as a spiritual encounter. He connects the fascinating darkness of space with the image of the creative God and sees in natural science a gift given by God for the pursuit of knowledge. Thiele emphasizes that science and spirituality are not opposites, but two sides of the same reality. His faith, which was founded in his Protestant childhood, is for him an unshakable anchor in everyday life and in difficult situations. He describes prayer as a help for letting go of worries, and accepts that God's ways are unfathomable. The fear of death is absent in him; space appears to him as a home and an origin. The text concludes with the conviction that human beings come from there and return there, where their roots are.

They sit in the spaceship in the shade, turn off the lights in the cockpit, dim the computer display, and look out into space. The most fascinating thing for me, and in a certain way truly the most wonderful, was the view directly away from the Earth, where it is absolutely dark. And it was a blackness like I have never experienced the color black before. And I have indeed experienced black situations. It is this black that fascinates and overwhelms Gerhard Thiele. When he speaks about it, words pour and flow out of him, although he otherwise consciously selects them, expresses himself precisely, clearly, keeps it brief, and wastes no words. That was completely surprising to me, simply because no one had told about it beforehand, perhaps not even mentioned it; he had called this black, the glittering black of the universe. And there I, I believe, sensed what he meant by it. Gerhard Thiele ponders, hesitates, searches for words. He did not feel particularly directly connected to God when he was in the sky, in space. Rather, it was this glittering black that he could associate with it. It often seems that people believe less in religion, in God, the more they know about the natural sciences, physics, the Earth, the planets, space. Of course, the natural sciences and spirituality or belief do not exclude each other at all. For me, they are two sides of the same reality. Gerhard Thiele believes in a God who created humans with a spirit that is to ask how this world works, that is to strive to understand this world. A God who has gifted humans with various random talents, giving him the talent to study physics. In the Bible, there are many attributes that God has, but for me, the creative aspect is clearly in the foreground. Black is the fine, thin turtleneck sweater that Gerhard Thiele wears. Dark blue is the plain jacket over it. He remembers the words with which the Bible begins. The creation story, which tells of the Spirit of God who hovered over the water. That is the most decisive sentence for me. That means for me that there is a meaning behind it. But that does not only mean that God has something planned with this Earth, but also with humans, and thus also with me. Gerhard Thiele remembers that it was his family who laid the foundation, the cornerstone of his faith. Who sent him to Protestant children’s services, where there were pictures of the loving God with the white beard, which he was allowed to color in. This image of God has changed. His personal relationship has remained. I was certainly not always equally close to the church, but the thread has never truly been broken. Thin, wiry is Gerhard Thiele. He ponders whether there would be anything that could cut this thread. That would be presumptuous to say; that cannot happen. Who knows what is still waiting for me. Therefore, I would wish that it never happens. But I cannot completely rule it out. I am a professing Christian. And hopefully, nothing will change about that. For me, it seems unshakable at the moment. Today, he regularly goes to church, prays his two favorite prayers in everyday life. Sometimes suddenly spontaneously, sometimes in particular, specific situations. When he knows that he has done everything he could, he hands his concerns over to God. In a certain way, it is perhaps a support. It is a help; otherwise, I would not say it. Even though he knows that he is not always heard. It often enough does not happen. We still have a bundle to confess when we should ever face each other. But he does not have doubts about his faith because of that. He shakes his head with the thin, snow-white hair that lies like a fine wreath around his head. The ways The ways of the Lord are unfathomable. If things do not go as I wish, then they simply do not go as I wish. But I cannot pin the blame on the good Lord. He looks through his glasses. The frameless design is simply understated, featuring square, angular lenses and thin, delicate wire temples that seem to grip firmly behind the ears. This is a mechanistic image, one in which the good Lord intervenes like a craftsman, like a watchmaker, who meticulously balances everything. But this does not correspond to the image I have of God. Yet sometimes, in unsightly, unpleasant situations, he catches himself wanting to ask God. Why? Someday I will walk with him on the beach. And then, at that very moment, the various stages of life will shine forth. When one then looks back, one realizes that one is leaving two footprints in the sand. And sometimes only one, you know the story. And that is the one that actually always carries me. Gerhard Thiele has no fear of death. This infinite, finite blackness of the universe does not feel dangerous or threatening to him. It was home. I already had the feeling that this is where I came from. And that is also the place where I am going again.

Manchmal plötzlich spontan, manchmal in besonderen bestimmten Situationen.
