Human beings are created to serve God and must therefore avoid every form of pointless waste of time and useless talk in order to lead a life pleasing to God.

A Muslim should live every moment of his life to the full and in accordance with the standards set by Allah, the Exalted.

The text admonishes Muslims to keep away from meaningless words and useless actions, since human beings are created to serve God. It is emphasized that every action must have a purpose and that wasting time contradicts the faith. The speaker refers to Quranic verses and hadiths that designate silence in the face of the useless and the remembrance of God in every situation as a duty. As a temporal reference, the text mentions the approaching Ramadan and the Night of Bara'at in the month of Sha'ban. The sermon calls on the congregation to use the coming fasting period as an opportunity to lead an orderly and God-pleasing life. It is prayed that Allah will protect the believers from empty activities and grant them Ramadan. The text is addressed to the community and connects theological foundations with practical conduct in life.

To Abstain from Useless Things (07.02.2025) Brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Allah mentions in the Noble Quran some characteristics of His believing servants who believe in Him with firm conviction and place their trust in Him. One of these valuable characteristics is to stay away from meaningless words and useless actions. [1] Just as every being has a purpose, so does human beings. The purpose of human life is to serve Allah, the Almighty, [2] and to strive to lead a meaningful and useful life in accordance with His commands and prohibitions. Brothers and sisters! To serve Allah means to do what Allah commands and to refrain from what He forbids. While Islam commands to engage in meaningful and purposeful activities that benefit humanity, our religion also advises us to stay away from futile work that is useless for both this world and the Hereafter and represents a waste of time and effort. A Muslim should live every moment of his life fully and according to the standards set by Allah, the Exalted. A believing person should heed the warning of the Messenger of Allah, who said: “Abstaining from what does not concern one is a sign that the person is a good Muslim.” [3] A Muslim cannot be an “empty, useless person”! A Muslim cannot waste his time; after completing one activity, he focuses on another. [4] A believing person remembers Allah while standing, sitting, and lying down. Even when resting, the Muslim reflects on the creation of the heavens and the earth and recognizes that everything has a meaning and purpose. [5] A Muslim stays away from useless talk! [6] A Muslim either speaks good or remains silent. [7] A Muslim does not engage in useless and unnecessary activities! If he hears useless talk in a place, he cannot stand it in that environment for long and does not wish to stay there. [8] Dear believers! We are gradually approaching the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan. We have already passed the first week of the month of Sha’ban, which is one of the three holy months. Insha’Allah, we will observe the Bara’at Night on Thursday evening, February 13th, which is the last harbinger of Ramadan. May Allah keep us occupied with activities that correspond to His pleasure. May Allah protect us from useless, meaningless, and empty activities. May the month of Sha’ban be blessed for us, and may Allah allow us to reach Ramadan. Geschwister! [2] Koran, ad-Dhariyat, 51/56.
