The three states of consciousness never actually existed, since they are products of ignorance and pure consciousness as witness does not witness states, but only appears as such because we assume there is something to see.

In Advaita Vedanta, where there is duality, as it was, then one sees another, hears another, knows another. But when it is to him, when it is to him, it becomes all that self-identification, what they see and with what.

The text analyzes the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, and deep sleep) from the perspective of Advaita Vedanta and compares them with Buddhist practices such as Dream Yoga and Dzogchen. The speaker argues that lucid dreaming is only conditionally relevant in Vedanta, since even the waking state is regarded as a dream. He notes that Buddhist practices aim to abide in the Buddha-nature in all three states, which is however considered insufficient in Advaita Vedanta. The central thesis is that there are in reality no states, since pure consciousness (the witness) never witnesses states. Maya is defined as that which never was and never will be, which is why the distinction between states is regarded as a defect of ignorance (avidya). The text emphasizes that duality arises only through false perception and disappears when ignorance falls away. It is pointed out that even the realization of the Buddha-nature or of the witness is not sufficient to negate the apparent existence of the states, since these never truly existed.

So, before I continue, I have a question. My question was about the dream state. What is it with the after-dream? How we play in the states and how we understand it as lucid dreaming? Lucid dreaming is the idea that if I am in this state and it is a dream, then it is not a dream, but a dream. I know that I have the dreamer. If you know that it is a dream, that is growth. That is a dream, because a dream is only a leg, the growth. That is a dream, that is a dream, the growth. That is a dream, that is a dream, the growth. That is a dream, that is a dream, the growth. That is a dream, meaning that you have already seen a dreamer. That is only a dream, the growth. Lucid dreaming is that you know that it is a dream. That is a dream, meaning that you already have a dream. Because if you are in the dream, that is the state of time, that you wake up. So that you have the dreamer, lucid dreaming, the growth. That makes the state that you wake up to something that you do in the dreamer. But you have never done it in the dream. The dream-ego cannot go in the dream. The dream can grow the growth completely. Lucid dreaming is, like Freudian psychology, that you remember the dream and that you are in the dreamer. And that you control the dream, what happens in the dream. If you know the dreamer, you can dream what happens, because you now know the dreamer. But that is not the point that Vedanta wants, that the dream, the growth, is the dream. And that lucid dreaming in Vedanta is, basically, out of the waking state. You have it, the waking, I did not have it into the dream, I did not create it into the dream at all. Lucid dreaming is, of course, in psychology, psychoanalysis, Freud. It is an important thing there, but from the perspective of Vedanta. It interests us only very conditionally insofar as even waking is actually a dream. Dream Yoga, Dream Yoga, yes, yes. In Buddhism, regarding the practices of dream yoga. I mean, there are practices like that in Buddhism, and I am sure that they can do it. I have a course, which you may have heard of, by Namkhai-Nurbu. Sogchen Dzichsa, so I did a 10-year retreat with Namkhai-Nurbu. And here is the thing, here is something he told me, and you can tell me if it sounds familiar to you. There is this thing, it is called the pointing-out instruction, the Rimpoche points to your Buddha-nature, he points to it. You are startled in this way briefly, what happens, your mind is startled. In that you did not expect it, and in that moment the mind briefly freezes, you had zero expectation and then you recognize the Buddha-nature. But even that is only momentary. In that you recognize the Buddha-nature, you do not become a Buddha. Because you do not become a Buddha, you do not become a Buddha. And that is like in modern Vedanta, even if you recognize the witness, the old vasanas come up again and so it seems also with the Buddha-nature, then the things are again covered, veiled. So, the practice is that you repeat throughout the whole day, how you throughout the whole day, as often as possible, again and again relax into the Buddha-nature. And through this practice, you become again and again in the Buddha-nature, in the Buddha-nature, in the Buddha-nature, in the Buddha-nature, and through this practice, you become in the Buddha-nature, longer and longer, of course, and effortlessly, and if you become a Buddhist yogi, you are in the Buddha-nature, from the moment you wake up until you fall asleep. But that is not enough, because when the dream comes, then you forget everything about the Buddha-nature. To overcome that, there is this thing, which is called the dream yogis. Where the yogi contains the dream and knows that it is only a dream, and he is not deluded that he is in this Dream-Yogis have developed, the Yogi, the ability itself, when he enters the dream, and that he is not deceived by the dream, but also remains in his Buddha-Nature even within the dream. If this pre-action is perfect, then you can obtain everything in the Buddha-Nature through waking and the Dream. But even that is not enough to become a Buddha. Even that is not enough, because when deep sleep comes, and that Yogi who has perfected the Buddha-Nature in the dream and in the waking state, in this deep sleep, then he is no longer such that he is no longer in the Buddha-Nature. And that is not enough, that he is no longer in the Buddha-Nature. He also loses everything and is simply in deep sleep. Therefore, there are Sleep-Yogis. You will become a Buddha when it is to you ... ... he is on the Oge. Can the Yogis enter deep sleep? Okay, can the Yogis wake, to come into the Dream? I believe, through the Dream-Yogis. A Dreamer can go into the Dream. A Dreamer is in the Dream. My idea is that it is not a Yogi who wakes, and then it is in a Dream, and then he is able to hold in the deep Sleep. He is fitting through these three states, and he is always awake, that is the Namkhai Norbu Teaching. He remains always awake in waking, in dream, or in deep sleep. He has perfected this through the Sleep-Yogi. That is the teaching. Namkhai Norbu is simply a dogma. He never made it into deep sleep. That is his dogma. When deep sleep comes, there is no Yogi anymore. Then there is also not the one who has found his way into deep sleep. And the other effect of deep sleep, the Sogchen Teaching, unlike Advaita Vedanta, is that from the growth the deep sleep, the deep sleep, which they call, the buddhist nature, the intrinsic, which they call, the pure intrinsic awareness. The waking state appears, from the nature of the buddhist nature duality appears. The Dramat appears, the dream appears, and disappears. The buddhist nature is dynamic. This is a true manifestation of the buddhist nature. All duality is nothing, it is the actual dance-something of duality. One does not have to rid oneself of that. You must see that as Buddha. Buddha-Verse, Universe. Ah, as if now Buddha were so, yes, yes, I got it. So, dynamic, so, Dzogchen is very similar to Advaita Vedanta, except Advaita Vedanta says, there never were any states, nobody abides all through it and becomes a Buddha. Apart from that, the Dramatis says, these three stage-states there is nothing, nobody had to become this Buddha. Because Vedanta says that the pure consciousness is all that there ever was. There's no state even while it's appearing. The consciousness never appeared. Consciousness never witnessed any state. The witness never witnessed anything. The witness never witnessed anything. He's only called a witness because we think there's something witness. We call him the witness from the state that there's something to be seen. Then it's aware of this and then it's not aware of anything. This makes it like Dzogchen where the manifestation they don't negate it. The word maya means yama samaya. That which is not yama which ya That which is not, is that which was not. That which is Maya is that which appears as if it exists, but in truth never was, in truth also never will be, because it is not. What Maya never gave and also never will be, there is simply no Maya. In truth, that itself never witnessed anything. Even observing the states is a defect. There can be no states. For the purpose, to examine the states, to analyze them, is only to see that in reality these states do not exist, never did, only this witness, this one. There is no one. There is no one. There is no Buddha Nature that abides in the waking state, no Buddha Nature that in the dream state and no Buddha Nature, which is in a state of sleep, in deep sleep, and abides there. It cannot exist; in Advaita Vedanta, there cannot even be the idea of abiding in something. The greatest Sogchampa is Longchenpa. He calls it spontaneous Wisdom-Display. Like the forests that in nature come from the Ocean, because all of nature is the Ocean, for forests that in nature come from the Ocean, to go. So the waves, whose nature is to rise, to be there, and to return again. So it is in the nature of the thing and in the Buddha Nature, that it so rises as the non-duality. The injoyable energy, which in the Buddha Nature is from the Ocean, the infinite potential energy, from which the capacity of the forests, which in nature is from the Ocean, the potential energy, which in nature is from the Ocean, which in nature is from the Ocean, that is the effect. And the perverted view, which would take this as something separate. And that is the effect. It is a pure appearance, therefore you cannot end it either. It is simply only from our perverted gaze our perverted vision, which makes this appear to us not in the Buddha-Nature but also as the Buddha-Nature. The waves are not different from the water of the Ocean, of the Sea. All of this is the Buddha-Nature. It is pure, as it arises. That is pure when it rises. It is pure, as it subsides. Pure so it abides. It is our impure Perception. We grasp at it, as if it existed. And that is why we are bound there. But if we see everything as the Buddha-Nature, then we have the non-duality of the Buddha-Nature and of the paths and of the Ocean. One does not need to remember the paths. One cannot remember the paths. For the paths are spontaneously remembered. That is like reality. One cannot remember the paths. One does not need to remember the paths. One simply has to see it exactly. The waves appear entirely naturally spontaneously. So one cannot rid oneself of them. It is only our perverted gaze that makes us reach for something after it. This, which ever rises and again abides and again dissolves into itself. That is the Buddha-Nature. Only this can one not rid oneself of, that natural existence, that which rises. If you realize the Buddha-Nature, the world does not disappear. You see it correctly. In Advaita Vedanta, where there is duality, as it was, then one sees another, hears another, knows another. But if it is to him, if it is to him, it becomes all that self-identification, what they see and with what. If one has the reality, the True, with what will he hear, whom will he see, whom will he meet, with what. Even knowing by oneself that that is only appearance does not help you. Because already the very knowing itself, I know, it is an appearance, that that is part of ignorance. If the ignorance is gone, you will be no memory, nothing will be guest and no values of Knowledge. It is only because of ignorance that there is duality, not because it is the nature of the Buddha-Nature, of the wish or of the self, to appear so. It is not the nature of the wish or of the wish, the wish to appear. It is because I do not know what a wish is, I have done it wrong. The wish is because of a non-identification. If the non-identification goes, I thought, I have opened all that up. I thought, I have opened that up. Only it is so, that it is not the Buddha-Nature that makes something appear. It is only a reality. It is only because of a false idea. It is because of Avidya, that there is duality, if the Avidya is gone, there was never duality, it was not duality, even if it appeared, it will never be a wish. It will never be a wish. It will never be a wish. It is no wish. I will end the three states, to show you how we can recognize that there are no three states. I try to end it with how we realize that there there are no three states. I do not have the mood of Avidya due to the Buddha-Nature. There was never anything that is there. There was never anything to witness. It is Sogchen. Let me see how we can put this together well and round it off, so that I am the witnessing, that I am not in deep sleep, when I come down from deep sleep, I can be the witnessing and that the three states do not exist at all. I started in this afternoon class with the A, the state U, the dream state M, the sleep state and the silent Nanach, the true Self is begun. So, it seems as though maybe there's the waking ah, ah, the first sound that we make ah has to merge into U, ah, ah, and the U merges when you close your, ah, they're all, and then the Muh merges into the silence, Toria Atma, which is always there. That silence is there when the ah appears, when the U appears. It's not a separate thing. The ah appears in silence, the U. But because we think there's waking dream and deep sleep, we have to merge the ah into the U, the U into the Muh, and then dissolve the Muh into the silence. But really the silence is there throughout the ah, um, Muh, and that's the only unchanging reality. Toria Atma is the only, real, unchangeable reality and we assume that in an ahm the ah must enter into the U, so waking into dream, u into M dream into sleep, actually was and then all of that dissolves into silence. Silence was when the ah appeared, silence was when the U appeared, silence was when the M appeared. None of them must enter into and transition into the silence. Silence was. Silence is, sorry. That was good. So in the same way that ah um silence, how do we see that if you're able to take your stand in the witness and see that the waking in dream are equal, from the point of view of your own self, which is the witnessing consciousness, from that Trishti, from that point of view, not the waking point of view, but from the point of view of the consciousness in which the both states appear and disappear equally, from this Trishti, from this perspective not from the perspective of waking, not from the perspective of dreaming, but from the perspective of that which witnesses dream and waking as equal. And the witnessing, that as soon as the dream appears, that waking is eliminated, and vice versa as soon as the dream appears, that waking is eliminated, that they mutually exclude each other, that they cancel each other out. Both are objects, both have a beginning and an end, and from this perspective waking and dream are exactly the same. In Gaudapada Karikas there is a passage, a sentence, a swallow, which states, the wise one sees waking exactly like the dream. The only way to see this, the only manner to see this, is from intuition, grasped from the inner. If you see that waking and dream are exactly the same, that is what waking is, that is the same. The one merges into the other, it is exactly the same. Now there are only two states. The appearance and the disappearance. The dream appears and it disappears. When it appears, it is a dream. When it disappears, we call it deep sleep. The next step is to see that there was never a duality, even that which appeared was never real. There is no dream appearance mountain. If we see, there is no duality in truth, even when the dream appears and in deep sleep there is no duality, then dream is deep sleep. Because there is no duality in deep sleep and truly also none in the dream. If you can see this fact, it means that the dream merges into the deep sleep, goes up, is one. We have let the waking state merge into and dissolve into the dream and we are now doing this with the dream state into the deep sleep. Now there is only deep sleep. But if there is no dream and no waking, what is the meaning of deep sleep? It is not a state. It is the Tattva. It is not in time or time, it does not begin, it does not end, it is pure consciousness. You have only called it deep sleep from the perspective of waking or from dreaming. In deep sleep, no one thinks; the waking state and the dream state have now disappeared. There are no states in deep sleep. Deep sleep is not a state. It is the highest reality. Just as we were in deep sleep, nothing being aware of us, so are we now. Our true nature can never change. That is how we were in deep sleep, so we come to realize that that itself is without a second. In Sanskrit, it is called pravilapita, in Sanskrit. Merging, you must see that waking is a dream, and the dream is deep sleep. And deep sleep, without waking and dream, is the one reality, without a second. That is the method of Vedanta. We all think that we move through the three stages, but there are no three states. There is only the rope, it is only the rope, that is the rope, that is the rope, that is the rope. There is not the stick, there is not the snake, not the ground. What I call waking, I am. What I call the dream, the dreaming, I am only I. And deep sleep is the All-Pervading, I. I am in a stage where there is no second thing, no time, no space, no fear, no desire. No one can hurt me. I do not desire liberation, because I am eternally always free. I am eternally always pure. I am eternally always awake, awakened. I am the Buddha. Buddha is that which is awakened. That is my eternally enduring nature. I did not have to wake up. I never went to sleep, fell asleep. I am the eternally enduring radiant consciousness. The one reality without a second. That is the final conclusion. If you bring that to be true in your own experience, it brings an end to this false conceptual assumption that you are this body-mind, the ego, that I am an actor, a knower, an enjoyer, or even that in the feminine form, which was the cause of my suffering. I do not have to defend that. I do not have to defend that. I do not have to defend that. I do not have to defend that. I do not have to merge and dissolve when I am dead, when I die. I am here and exactly now. I do not have to make any effort to defend that. And I do not have to make any effort to rid myself of anything. I am nitya shuddha, buddha, mukta, swabhava, I am nitya shuddha, I am eternally enduring. Nitya mukta, eternally free, always free. I was never in form, I was never bound. Nitya buddha, I am always awake, awakened. We normally think, when one examines it, there is even a better way, a better possibility than waking, dream, and deep sleep. There are only two experiences that we may possibly have. For a moment, for a second, I think about it, and then I want someone to hold it. If someone has another experience, besides these two, then that is not so. I am either aware of something, or I am not aware of anything. Is there a third possible experience that we can have? And that is indeed, that encompasses the entire human experience with one. That is what I have for a human. That encompasses the entire human experience with one. Shankara called it darshanavritti, adarshanavritti. That is what Shankara calls it. The state in which I am darshanavritti, I am aware of something. Or I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. And when I am aware of something, I do not then become aware. I am the awareness, that eternally always is present, whether something appears, disappears, does not appear. That is the complex vision of the whole spectrum. I have said, shake a dram, sleep deeply. But shake a dram is only Darchen of Ritthi. I am aware of something. Waking and deep sleep is simply Darchen; in the dream it is simply Darchen of Ritthi. I am aware of something. It includes everything. In the daydream I am aware of something. In the Brennajama I am aware of something. In the hypnosis I am aware of something. In every state that I may have, I must also be somewhat aware of something, whether I am a Drehdreamer. A Drehdreamer, did I say that? Yes, I said that. There are also a few others. Also in sleepwalking. Either I am aware of something, whether in the daydream or in sleepwalking. And the other possibility is, I am not aware of anything. If someone hits me on the head and I fall into a coma, I am not aware of anything. I am not aware of anything. If I am anesthetized in the hospital, I am not aware of anything. What about that? Nirvi kalpa samadhi. Am I aware of something? If I am aware of something, then it is salvi kalpa samadhi. If all Chittas, all Frittis are gone, Chittas, Frittis nirod, if they have all come to

Buddha-Verse, Universe. Ach, als das jetzt Buddha wär so, ja, ja, I got it. So, dynamisch, so, Dzogchen ist sehr similiar zu Advaita Vedanta, except Advaita Vedanta sagt, there never was any states, nobody abides all through it and becomes a Buddha. That which is not yama which ya Das, was nicht ist, ist das, was nicht war. All of this is the Buddha-Nature. Es ist pure, as it arises. Das ist rein, wenn es aufsteigt. Es ist pure, as it abbaut. That was good. So in the same way that ah um silence, how do we see that if you're able to take your stand in the witness and see that the waking in dream are equal, dass von the point of view of your own self, which is the witnessing consciousness, von that Trishti, von that point of view, not the waking point of view, but from the point of view of the consciousness in which the both states appear and disappear equally, von diesem Trishti, von diesem Gesichtspunkt nicht vom Gesichtspunkt des Wachens, nicht vom Gesichtspunkt des Träumens, sondern vom Gesichtspunkt dessen, der bezeugtes Traum und Wachen gleich ist. Shankara called it darshanavriti adarshanavriti.
