Sharing one's wealth with those in need is a religious obligation that is particularly called for during Ramadan and that both strengthens the community and brings divine reward and forgiveness of sins.

Islam calls on us to shape a society of compassion and justice. An important cornerstone of this is the willingness to share.

The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB Sermon Commission for the second half of Ramadan 2025. It calls on believers to shape, in the spirit of Islam, a society of compassion and justice by sharing. Several Quranic passages are cited that command giving, renouncing greed, and caring for orphans and the poor. Specifically, Sadaqa al-Fitr with a minimum amount of 15 euros in Germany and Zakah at 2.5% of savings are presented as religious obligations. DITIB promotes aid projects in 23 countries and in earthquake-affected areas under the motto "Share so that joy grows." Donations can be made to religious officers, by bank transfer, or through a digital donation system. The text combines religious obligation with practical charity and promises divine reward, forgiveness of sins, and purification of wealth.

Share so that joy grows (14.03.2025) We have already left the first half of the blessed Ramadan behind. May Allah grant us the strength to complete this blessed month in the best way! O Allah, we fast for Your pleasure, we believe in You and trust in You. Make Ramadan a testimony of our faith! Brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Islam calls upon us to shape a society of compassion and justice. An important cornerstone of this is the willingness to share. Our holy book, the Quran, teaches us that in everything we possess, there is also a share for those in need.[1] It warns us against accumulating wealth without using it in the way of Allah.[2] The Quran says: “Give of what has been given to you!”[3] “Do not be stingy!”[4] “You will not attain true righteousness until you spend from that which you love.”[5] “Woe to the one who prays, but does not care for orphans and does not feed the poor!”[6] Brothers and sisters! Ramadan reminds us how important it is to heed these commandments. Especially our brothers and sisters in distress look upon this month with great hope, for it brings blessing and support. One of the traditions of Ramadan is the “Sadaqa al-Fitr,” which enables our needy brothers and sisters to experience the festive days with joy. This year’s minimum amount for the Sadaqa al-Fitr in Germany is 15 euros. Those who are financially able to give more should take this opportunity to earn additional reward. Brothers and sisters! Another obligation for us as Muslims is the Zakah.[7] It means that believing people who possess a certain amount of wealth must give at least 2.5% of their savings to the needy mentioned in the Quran.[8] These donations become food for the needy. Scholarships for students. Relief for debtors. Comfort for desperate hearts. Brothers and sisters! As DITIB, under the motto “Share so that joy grows,” we continue our aid projects and deliver your donations to those in need in 23 countries as well as to the areas affected by the earthquake. Thank Allah, our Ramadan campaign for food packages is proceeding successfully. Our volunteers work tirelessly to ensure your help reaches the right places. Now it is up to us to be part of this charity and to earn the prayers of those in need. Brothers and sisters! You can hand over your donations directly to our religious officers or the persons responsible for the mosque community – of course, with a donation receipt. Alternatively, you can also donate by bank transfer or through our digital donation system in the mosques. Do we wish for our sins to be forgiven?⁹ Do we wish to purify¹⁰ and increase our wealth?¹¹ Then we should be the “giving hand.” The Prophet said: “Whoever fulfills the needs of his Muslim brother, Allah will fulfill his needs.”*¹² Let us therefore not hesitate to support our brothers and sisters in distress both financially and morally! May Allah accept all our good deeds. May our Friday be blessed! The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Quran, ad-Dhariyah, 51/19. [2] Quran, at-Tawba, 9/34. [3] Quran, al-Qasas, 28/54. [2] Koran, at-Tawba, 9/34. [3] Koran, al-Qasas, 28/54.
