SAINTS CYRIL AND METHOD
The holy patrons of our parish, “Apostles of the Slavs,” are the two brothers Cyril and Method from Thessaloniki, named in recognition of their merits in introducing Christianity to Moravia.
The brothers were born in the Greek city of Thessaloniki and from childhood mastered the local Slavic dialect, which a considerable part of the population of the city and its surroundings spoke. The younger brother Constantine (Cyril was his monastic name) received a brilliant education in the court school of Constantinople, served for some time as librarian in the Patriarch’s library, but preferred devotion to God over high service at court. He secretly went to a monastery on the Sea of Marmara and devoted himself to the study of Scripture. But soon his whereabouts were discovered, and Constantine had to return to the capital, where the position of a teacher of philosophy at the University of Constantinople awaited him. Already in his youth, Constantine became known as an outstanding philosopher and polemicist. He triumphed in the scholarly dispute with the former Patriarch John, a follower of Iconoclasm, and participated in missionary journeys to the Saracens and Khazars, where he brilliantly defended the dogmas of Christian doctrine. When the Great Moravian Prince Rostislav in the year 862 approached the Byzantine Emperor Michael III with the request to send him a spiritual person for the preaching of the Word of God among the Slavs in their mother tongue, the choice fell on Constantine and his older brother Method, who at that time lived as a monk in a monastery on Mount Olympus. In the year 862, Emperor Michael III sent the two brothers to Moravia, after Prince Rostislav had asked him for Slavic-speaking priests. Cyril and Method first introduced the Slavic language, for which Cyril even created his own script adapted to the Slavic language, the “Glagolitic script.” He is thus considered the founder of Slavic literature. He also translated the Holy Scripture into the Slavic language… read more about our holy patrons…
