Ramadan is an intensive school for the servitude of Allah, whose learned virtues and practices believers are to maintain for a lifetime so as not to become mere 'Ramadan Muslims'.
Let us not forget that fasting lasts one month, whereas the servitude of Allah lasts a lifetime. Let us not become 'Ramadan Muslims' who observe the commands of Allah only in Ramadan.
The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB that describes Ramadan as a kind of school for the lifelong servitude of Allah. The central message is that fasting lasts one month, but servitude lasts a lifetime. The text urges believers to maintain the virtues learned during Ramadan, such as self-restraint, prayer, Quran recitation, and care for those in need, also in the eleven months that follow. It warns against becoming so-called 'Ramadan Muslims' who observe the commands only in Ramadan. The text refers to the uncertainty of whether one will experience another Ramadan and encourages shaping the rest of one's life accordingly. Specifically, it points to the additional fasting of six days in the month of Shawwal. The text concludes with a prayer for steadfastness in faith.

Ramadan is a month, servitude is a lifetime
(04.04.2025)
It is said: "The ritual prayer begins after the Selam at the end of the ritual prayer." Yes, that is true. Whether we have performed the ritual prayer lawfully or not can be seen in our behavior after the prayer. It is also said: "Fasting begins when Ramadan ends." Yes – whether Ramadan has made us a righteous servant of Allah or not will be shown in the eleven months after Ramadan.
Brothers and sisters! Dear believers!
Ramadan was a school that intensely taught us servitude to Allah. Some of us learned beautiful things that were unknown to us. And others of us remembered things that were already known but had been forgotten. Fasting taught us self-restraint. It showed us how to protect ourselves from errors. Let us restrain ourselves even after Ramadan and continue to protect ourselves from all errors. Fasting also taught us how strong a person's willpower can actually be. It showed us how we can banish harmful habits such as smoking from our lives if we want to and if Allah enables us. "You just have to want it! You just have to decide, then Allah will help you!" said Ramadan. It told us: You can get rid of all your bad habits with Allah's help, if you want to."
Brothers and sisters!
The closeness that we built up to our exalted Creator during Ramadan should not diminish after Ramadan. The Qiyam, the Ruqu and the Sujud in the ritual prayer, which we increased during Ramadan, should not become fewer afterwards either. The Quran should not be put back on the dusty shelves. The needy who were cared for during Ramadan should not be forgotten afterwards. Families who gathered at one table for Iftar and Sahur should continue to preserve this gathering. Our inner world, which was purified and cleansed during Ramadan, should not fall into darkness after its end. The beautiful virtues that we internalized during Ramadan should continue to enrich us.
Brothers and sisters!
Let us not forget that fasting lasts one month, while servitude to Allah lasts a lifetime. Let us not become "Ramadan Muslims" who only observe Allah's commandments during Ramadan. Whether we will experience another Ramadan is uncertain. But it is our decision whether we live the rest of our lives as in Ramadan or not. So let us, dear brothers and sisters, spend the remaining part of our lives preserving the values we have gained and, if we reach it – so Allah wills – next year, greet it with all these beautiful virtues.
Dear brothers and sisters!
Let us never forget that command of Allah, where it says: "(…) serve your Lord until the Certain (death) comes to you!"[1] Let us strive to live according to Islam and to die as believers. Let us not neglect our obligatory practices of faith and let us enrich our lives with additional voluntary practices of faith. We are in the month of Shawwal. Let us heed the recommendation of our Prophet (s), who said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan and adds six days (of fasting) in the month of Shawwal, it is as if he had fasted the whole year."[2]
"Our Lord! Do not let our hearts go astray after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. You are the Bestower of Bounties without ceasing."[3]

Liebe Geschwister!
