The life of Saint Francis of Assisi is a guiding model for a spiritual renewal of the Church that, in poverty, humility, and peaceableness, makes faith in Jesus Christ newly alive.

A jubilee that the whole Church may take as an occasion to ask for a spiritual renewal in the style of Saint Francis.

The text recounts the life of Saint Francis of Assisi on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of his death and presents him as a guide for a spiritual renewal of the Church. Francis is described as a young man who, through war and captivity, comes to reflect on the meaning of his life and experiences a vision of the crucified Christ in the church of San Damiano. The command to rebuild the house of God is initially understood literally and then as a spiritual renewal of the community of believers. Francis gives away his possessions, lives in poverty, and founds the community of the Lesser Brothers together with like-minded companions. The text highlights his peace mission to the Sultan in Egypt, his musical talent, and the reception of the stigmata. As a connection to the present, the current Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, is mentioned as a Franciscan who acts in a reconciling manner in a politically difficult situation. The text concludes with the call to take the jubilee as an occasion to ask for a spiritual renewal in the style of Saint Francis.

Pastoral Letter of the Bishop of Regensburg for Lent 2026 Saint Francis of Assisi: A Guiding Light 800 Years After His Death Dear children, dear young and adult sisters and brothers in the Lord! 1. “Francesco, do you not see that my house is falling into ruin? Go and rebuild it for me!” With this call begins the most profound movement of renewal in the history of the Church. What had happened? We are in the year 1205. Francesco Bernardone, son of a wealthy cloth-merchant family in Assisi, Italy, is twenty-three or twenty-four years old. In the small town on Mount Subasio, he had been allowed to enjoy a carefree youth. Now, through his participation in a military campaign and a period of captivity, he has become deeply reflective and is wrestling with the meaning of his life. In the dilapidated small church of San Damiano, he prays fervently beneath a panel crucifix hanging there. It shows the crucified Christ as the living Lord with an open side wound and, at the same time, open eyes. To Him, Francesco pours out his heart: “O alto e glorioso Dio – O great and glorious God! Illuminate the darkness of my heart!” 2. “Go and rebuild my house for me!” The command to renovate his church, which he subsequently receives, Francis first understands in a purely literal sense. He procures stones, mortar, and tools, until he realizes: The dilapidated church is not primarily this small chapel, but the spiritual house, the community of believers, which had grown lukewarm and, over wide stretches, had become externalized; a church in which faith in Jesus Christ was dying out. It needs an inner renewal. Francis gives away his possessions to the poor and resolves to live in literal obedience to Jesus’ call to follow Him. He is rejected by his biological father. But the Bishop of Assisi holds his protective hand over Francis, who entrusts himself and his life completely to God as his heavenly Father. 3. Soon, like-minded people gather around him. They live in small communities from what people give them for their witness to life. They call themselves the “Lesser Brothers.” Their particular concern is for the poor; at that time, these were especially the lepers. As early as 1209, a first Rule of Life is approved in simple form by Pope Innocent III. Around this time, Francis was also ordained a deacon. Only 13 years later does Pope Honorius III officially confirm the Rule of Life and hand Francis the so-called “bull-confirmed” Rule in November 1223. With this, his movement, alongside the Dominicans, has arrived in the heart of the Church as one of the great mendicant orders. 4. Church recognition is important to Francis. Despite all the inadequacy of the visible Church and its representatives, he values the priests, for to them is entrusted the celebration of the Sacraments. The celebration of the Eucharist and the adoration of the Lord Jesus Christ present in the Bread of Life is for him the source of spiritual life. And it is the Church that transmits and proclaims the Word of God. Through her, Christ the Lord speaks, to whom we ought to listen (cf. Mt 17:5). Early on, the community radiates beyond the borders of Italy. In 1218, in Morocco, where they carry the Gospel, the first Franciscan brothers suffer martyrdom. Their fate moves the Portuguese canon regular Anthony so deeply that he joins the Lesser Brothers – we know him as the later Saint Anthony of Padua. Ecclesiastical recognition is important to Francis. Despite all the inadequacy of the visible Church and its representatives, he esteems the priests, for to them is entrusted the celebration of the Sacraments. The celebration of the Eucharist and the adoration of the Lord Jesus Christ present in the Bread of Life is for him the source of spiritual life. And it is the Church that transmits and proclaims the Word of God. Through her, Christ the Lord speaks, to whom we ought to listen (cf. Mt 17:5). Their fate moves the Portuguese canon regular Anthony so deeply that he joins the Lesser Brothers — we know him as the later Saint Anthony of Padua. Also a 2/3 young woman from Assisi, Clare, is inspired by Francis’ Gospel-conformant way of life. The Clarisses founded by her are a contemplative religious community. 5. In 1219, Francis undertakes an unheard-of peace mission. He sets out for Egypt to speak with Sultan Melek-el-Kâmel in disarming poverty and humility. He asks for permission to undertake a mission and for the protection of the Holy Places of the activity of Jesus in Palestine. On his return journey in 1220, he visits them all himself. Francis is received cordially by the Sultan. The dialogue between the disciple of Jesus and the powerful follower of Muhammad has something incredibly current and guiding. Francis does not achieve any military success; however, the fact that the “Minor Brothers” are recognized and protected to this day as guardians of the holy places in Palestine ultimately goes back to this peace initiative of Saint Francis. The current Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, is a Franciscan and works as best he can in a politically extremely difficult situation, promoting reconciliation and peace. 6. Saint Francis was a musically gifted and creative person. We owe him a number of prayers and poems in the Italian vernacular that was just developing. The most famous is the “Cantico delle creature,” known in German as the “Canticle of the Sun.” It begins with the words “Laudato si‘ – Praise be to you, my Lord.” Whoever has God as Father and lives in the most intimate friendship with Jesus is familiarly and fraternally connected with all of creation: “Brother Sun,” “Sister Moon,” “Mother Earth,” “Sister Water,” etc. 7. Two years before his death, on September 14, 1224, Francis receives on Mount La Verna, during an apparition of the crucified Christ in the form of a six-winged Seraph, the stigmata on his hands, feet, and side. He is the first publicly known person in whom this extraordinary form of becoming like Jesus Christ has manifested itself. To his contemporaries, this appeared as a heavenly confirmation of a life in passionate love for Christ, who allowed him to share in the “suffering for the Gospel” (cf. 2 Tim 1:8b). 8. In the joy over the bull-confirmed Rule with the Church’s recognition of the poor way of life, Francis celebrates Christmas in 1223 in the cave of Greccio. Instead of a magnificent church space, the brothers surround an ox and a donkey. Before the portable altar stands an empty manger with hay and straw. The poverty and humiliation of the incarnate and Eucharistically present Son of God was to be, as it were, tangible. One of the participants had the vision during Francis’s sermon that the Jesus Child comes alive in the arms of Francis. This is an apt summary of what Francis of Assisi has gifted to the Church through his work: a newly living Jesus. Years earlier, so the legend reports, Pope Innocent III, on the occasion of Francis’s visit to the Papal Palace at the Lateran, saw in a dream vision how a simple religious man saves the Lateran Basilica from collapse. Francis of Assisi dies on October 3, 1226. This year it will be 800 years. A jubilee that the whole Church may take as an occasion to ask for a spiritual renewal in the style of Saint Francis. A young woman from Assisi, Clare, is inspired by Francis’s Gospel-conformant way of life. The Clarisses founded by her are a contemplative religious community. 5. Already in the first generation of Franciscans, the Franciscan movement reached Regensburg, and with the Minorite Church, it has left an impressive witness to its power of faith, shaping the city. Even today, several religious communities are actively at work in the diocese, guided by the example and inspiration of Saint Francis of Assisi. I think of the Franciscans on the Maria-Hilf Mountain in Amberg or in Neukirchen beim Heiligen Blut, where they each care for the pilgrimages. Franciscan Minorites are active in St. Felix in Neustadt an der Waldnaab and also on the Bogenberg near Straubing, likewise with important pilgrimages. They also work in Dingolfing and in the parish association “Loiching – Niederviehbach – Oberviehbach”. We are very grateful that the Franciscans make these places into spiritual centers and places of proclamation. But not only the male orders are to be mentioned: Also the Mallersdorf Sisters, officially called “Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family”, live and work in the footsteps of Saint Francis, as do the Franciscan Sisters of Aiterhofen. In addition, there is the community of Clarisses in Dingolfing, and last but not least the “Franciscan Community”, the successor of the Third Order. 10. Dear sisters and brothers, the Church commemorates in this year 2026 not only the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis. In Rome, the completion of St. Peter’s Basilica in its present form 400 years ago is commemorated. And in Regensburg, we celebrate 750 years since the first consecration of the altar in the new Gothic cathedral. We are grateful for these and many other magnificent church spaces in which we can gather for prayer, above all for the celebration of the Eucharist. The small church of San Damiano and even two others nearby were repaired with his own hands by Francis, the son of a cloth merchant, after his vocation, so that Saint Clare could found the first convent there a few years later. Francis certainly reminds us that the splendor of our churches can ultimately only be the outward mirror image of the Church made up of living stones. Francis initiated its profound renewal from the source of following Christ in a time when the Church was becoming externalized. Let the grateful remembrance of his life witness in the consistent following of Christ help us to accept and overcome the challenges of our days. To this end, may the almighty and merciful God, the + Father and the + Son and the + Holy Spirit, bless you through the intercession of Saint Francis, Saint Clare, Saint Anthony of Padua, Blessed Paul Josef Nardini, and all the saints. Was war geschehen? 9.
