The religious pleasure of God is inextricably linked to the ethical attitude and care toward one's own parents, with the mother occupying a position of priority.
He explained that after shirk – associating another deity alongside Allah – the greatest sin is to harm one's parents.[7] And he said: "The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the parents."[8]
The text is a Friday sermon of the DITIB that highlights the central importance of parents, especially the mother, in Islam. It draws on hadiths that equate the pleasure of the parents with the pleasure of God, and on Quranic verses that designate kindness and humility toward the parents as a religious duty. The sermon describes the parents as the source of life, first teachers, and emotional support, with the mother occupying a particularly high position. It is emphasized that life is a trial and that the Prophet Muhammad was also shaped by the early loss of his parents, which made him a model of care. A word of comfort is directed at believers who have lost their parents, encouraging them to fill the void with the love of God and to appreciate the support of the community. The text concludes with a prayer for the health of living parents and mercy for deceased parents, as well as for forgiveness on the Day of Judgment. The sermon connects theological foundations with practical instructions for daily life within the family.

The Pleasure of God Lies in the Pleasure of the Parents
(09.05.2025)
A man came to the Prophet (s) and asked him, “O Messenger of Allah! Who deserves it most that I do good to them and show them my closeness?” The Prophet answered: “Your mother.” The man asked again: “And who comes next?” The Prophet repeated: “Your mother.” When the man asked a third time: “And who then?”, the answer was once again: “Your mother.” On the fourth occasion, the Prophet finally said: “Then comes your father.”[1]
Brothers and Sisters! Believers!
Among the most valuable gifts that Allah has bestowed upon us, our parents stand first. Our mother is the source of our life, who has borne great hardships to bring us into the world. She is our first teacher, teaching us what is right and what is wrong. She is like a guardian angel, who lets us take precedence in eating and drinking and forgoes her sleep when we are ill. Our father, on the other hand, is a rock upon which we lean when we encounter difficulties and to whom we seek refuge.
Brothers and Sisters!
Kindness towards parents is among the duties that Allah has imposed upon us. The Quran states regarding this: Show kindness to your parents![2] Give from your wealth for them! [3] Do not even say “Oh, man!” to them! Do not scold them! Speak gentle words to them! Spread the wings of tenderness over them humbly! And pray for them: “My Sustainer! Show them mercy, just as they cared for me and raised me when I was a child!” [4]
Brothers and Sisters!
Life is a test, and some phases of life can be particularly difficult for us. The life of our Prophet was also marked by trials. He never knew his father and lost his mother when he was five or six years old. All this did not prevent him from maintaining a good character, being a caring husband and a loving father. With his words and his behavior, he was the best role model for parents and children.
When he was asked: “Which deed is the greatest?”, he answered: “Prayer at its proper time and kindness to parents.”[5] And he also said: “Parents are a gate to Paradise. Whether one enters through this gate or not is in one’s own hands.”[6] He explained that after Shirk – associating another deity with Allah – the greatest sin is to harm one’s parents.[7] And he spoke: “The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the parents.”[8]
Dear brothers and sisters who have lost your parents early!
Do not lose hope. You are not alone either. Fill the emptiness in your hearts with the love for God and His Messenger. Remember the good times, and do not forget that there are people around you who love you and support you. Appreciate their value, be strong, and look hopefully into the future.
O Allah! Grant our parents a healthy and happy life! Show mercy to our deceased parents! O Allah, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Judgment![9] (Amin)

Das Wohlgefallen Gottes liegt im Wohlgefallen der Eltern
(09.05.2025)
