The place of Himmelspforten serves as a physical and spiritual symbol that the church must maintain the connection to the Transcendent through lived community and hospitality in a secularized age.

We must, as the church, keep the heaven open. Nothing is more important today than this task.

The text is a sermon or address on the occasion of an anniversary of the Himmelspforten retreat and education house in Würzburg. It connects the biblical story of Jacob with the local history of the place, which is understood as a 'gate to heaven.' The central thesis is that this place has preserved its sacred dignity through lived community, hospitality, and spiritual orientation. The speaker calls on the listeners to consciously cultivate places of transcendence and prayer in today's time of alienation and homogenization. He emphasizes the significance of Mary as 'Porta Caeli' and the role of the church in keeping the heaven open for people. The address concludes with a thanksgiving to the staff and bishops who have shaped the place, and refers to the Eucharist as a place of heavenly encounter.

Beloved sisters and brothers in the Lord! The Dream of Jacob about the Gate of Heaven "How awe-inspiring is this place! It is nothing other than the house of God and the gate of heaven." (Gen 28:17) Thus cries out the patriarch Jacob in full astonishment. In the dream he had seen how the ladder of heaven rested on the place where he had slept. Over the ladder of heaven the angels of God ascended and descended. Indeed, he had seen the gate to heaven. "How awe-inspiring is this place! It is nothing other than the house of God and the gate of heaven." Heaven's Gates – a place of long spiritual tradition "How awe-inspiring is this place!" This word of the patriarch Jacob also applies to the monastery and retreat house of Himmelspforten. A look into the eventful history shows that for centuries people have kept this place holy, because they had experienced the gate to heaven here. I can only recapitulate this in brief. The Cistercian nunnery founded in 1231 in Himmelstadt, then relocated in 1248 to Schönau, and from there in the so-called "Schottenau" in 1251 finally came to rest. To this day it is the oldest existing women's monastery of the city, which has experienced many highs and lows. The nuns faithfully preserved the faith during the Reformation and withstood the storms of the times, especially in the devastating Thirty Years' War. Then the monastery was simply dissolved overnight as part of the secularization in 1804. To honor the place and restore the gate of heaven And yet. Many were not satisfied with that. They knew: "How awe-inspiring is this place!" No military hospital should move in here, and neither a tobacco nor a paint factory has any place here. The awe-inspiring place needs people who give honor to God and thereby bestow upon this special place its unique dignity once again. To this day I am fascinated that it was not the bishop, not the cathedral chapter, and no clerics. No, it was two pairs of sisters from Margetshöchheim and from Dettelbach, the Götz and Röll siblings, who did not rest until they were able to persuade the Carmelite nuns from Gmunden on Lake Traun in Austria to revive the venerable monastery. The sense for this unique place and the longing to have a gate of heaven again in Würzburg had filled their heart. Their legacy, which they incidentally did not come cheaply, teaches us to this day what pious sense can accomplish. And how much it depends on the individual, who does not look to the authorities but takes the initiative himself. They wanted to give honor to God in the knowledge that we all urgently need such places, today perhaps more than ever, in a time that seemingly makes everything equal and is in danger of losing the sense for transcendence. Because the premises were too large for a Carmelite nunnery, part of the convent buildings was then handed over to the diocese in 1925, which exactly 100 years ago established a retreat and education house of the same name here. I am very glad that the monastery church has since 1969 again taken on the old patronage "Assumption of Mary," after from 1844 to 1969 Saint Nicholas of Myra was the patron. Through the return to the old patronage it became clear that one wanted to place oneself again in the old Cistercian tradition and to connect with the rich history of this awe-inspiring place. The patronage "Himmelspforten" is a program. I would like to consider this with you on this day from a threefold perspective. Mary as the Porta Caeli The Cistercians have placed all of their monastery churches under the patronage of "Mary, Queen of Heaven." This is no coincidence. For Mary is, as a person, the very gateway to heaven. Through her, the Redeemer entered this world. As the first to be redeemed, she has also gone before us into heaven. There she awaits the faithful and shows them the way from this world to heaven. Just as Mary became the "gateway to heaven," so too are we to become gateways to heaven. Christ wants to come into this world through us as well. At the same time, we are not to grow weary of showing others the way to heaven. This is a great claim. For me, against this background, it has always been significant that the retreat and education center and the monastery were situated side by side. How often, as vicar general, did I go into the monastery church during my lunch break to find a moment of quiet there and to pray. The sisters, through their silent presence, remind us of what truly matters: how to abide in the presence of the Lord, as Mary did, and never to lose sight of him. For only in this way can we become gateways to heaven for others. This is our vocation and our mission – in the monastery just as in the retreat and education center. Plan, even as a community of service, such moments of gathering that serve to confirm for yourself your own mission and to strengthen your own calling. The new basic order invites precisely this, as employers to repeatedly remind the employees where they work, from what attitude we carry out our service, and what our claim as a Church is. Gateways to Heaven as an Expression of Lived Community When the Cistercians chose the name "Gateway to Heaven" for their monasteries, that was of course also a reference to monastic communal life. In this community, so the promise, you can experience how one enters into heaven. This is the claim that to this day also applies to the retreat and education center. Now, Himmelspforten is known for its hospitality and for its outstanding service. I can say this without exaggeration, based on the feedback from the vicars general and the bishops. Both are fundamentally Benedictine virtues. To see Christ in every stranger, to receive him and to serve him. The spirit of a house shows itself in the way people treat one another and, last but not least, in a well-set table at which one lingers over good food, the delicious Franconian wine, and in conversations that go to the depths, because one gladly spends time together. The fact that the house is closed off to the outside by the wall also gives the place a certain coziness. The "Hortus Conclusus," the "enclosed garden" of the monastery, also offers the retreat and education center protection and the necessary silence, so that in an atmosphere of concentration the often difficult topics can be discussed, considered, and decided upon. The good service and the monastic character of the place are a genuine competitive advantage. Cultivate both, for it is these factors that make up the appeal of this place and radiate a sense of awe. Himmelspforten as a Claim on Our Retreat, Education, and Conference Work One last thing. The name Himmelspforten is also a claim on our substantive work. We, as a Church, must keep heaven open. Nothing is more important today than this mission. The document "Our Hope" of the Würzburg Synod, whose adoption we celebrated last year on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, formulates it as follows: "The crisis of Church life ultimately rests not on difficulties of adaptation to our modern life and sense of life, but on difficulties of adaptation to that in which our hope is rooted and from whose being it receives its height and depth, its way and its future: Jesus Christ." (UH II.3) That is why the synodal document recommends: "It is therefore the law of our ecclesial renewal that we must above all overcome the difficulty of alignment with him to whom we appeal and from whom we live, and that we must more consistently enter into his discipleship, in order to reduce the distance between him and us and to bring to life our community of destiny with him. Then there is a way and a future. Then there is a chance to be of today, wholly present — to share the problems, questions, and sufferings everywhere, without submitting to their secret hopelessness." (UH II.3) In rousing words, this sets forth what it means to hold open the gate to heaven. I wish for myself and for us that we always find the necessary formats in our retreat and formation work to open a gate to heaven for people. I also wish for us as bishops and other ecclesial leaders that in our endless conferences and assemblies we never forget to look to Christ, who said of himself that he is the door to heaven. To hold this door open and not to block it or let it fall shut is our mission. If we succeed in this, then we do full honor to the name "Gates of Heaven," then people can say with the patriarch Jacob: "How awe-inspiring is this place! It is nothing other than the house of God and the gate of heaven." Acknowledgments On this day I thank the team of the Himmelspforten retreat house under the direction of Mrs. Dittmann-Nath for their commitment and the very good service. I thank the program coordinators for their effort to offer demanding programs here that help to rediscover heaven anew. I would also like to thank the clergy who have stamped this place with their seal through their work. I likewise thank the Rita Sisters, who through their service have given the house a spiritual character. Last but not least, my thanks go to my predecessors in office. Bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg founded the Cistercian nunnery 800 years ago. Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried consecrated the education house almost exactly 100 years to the day. Under Bishop Josef Stangl, the renewed house was able to resume its operations in 1967. It was ultimately reserved to Bishop Friedhelm Hofmann to hand over the house to its purpose in 2005 after comprehensive renewal. To all of them I owe, we owe, our thanks. We now wish to bring this thanks to the Lord in the celebration of the Eucharist. For it is the place where heaven opens over us. Amen.

Amen.
