The risen Jesus overcomes every closed door – whether physical or in the heart – and, through the Holy Spirit, grants new breath of life, peace, and the possibility to begin anew.
Jesus does not need a door with a key and a hinge, with a door handle and a threshold. He, the Risen One, is suddenly there, in the midst of the crowd of frightened disciples. He is there to bring peace, to forgive sin, and to open the doors of hearts.
The sermon takes up the image of the closed doors in John 20:19-23 and transfers it to the experience that church doors are often closed during the Pentecost season. The disciples had barred the doors out of fear; Jesus nevertheless enters and grants peace, forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit. The preacher connects this narrative with people's longing for stillness, security, and closeness to God in a loud, anxious world. He calls for opening not only physical doors but also the doors of hearts. At the end, he sketches a visionary Pentecost celebration in which the congregation wants to experience God's Spirit creatively and openly. The sermon closes with the appeal not to remain in the 'eternal yesterday' but to give the Spirit room.

Dear congregation!
I. Locked Church Doors
It is always frustrating: When one seeks a place for silent prayer, a moment of peace, a space that has been prayed through and sung through for centuries, a house in which one expects a special closeness to God ... and then it says: “closed.” The longing does not reach its goal. Even rattling the handle of the mighty entrance door does not make it any better … Once around the old, protective church walls to the left. Perhaps there is another access, from the side, through the sacristy? Or to the right …? Nothing! Everything is bolted and locked. A conscientious church warden?
Many will experience this again on this Pentecost weekend. Anyone traveling by bicycle, on foot, or by car and seeking a moment of silence in one of our beautiful, old churches will quickly and frustratedly have to turn away again: Locked. The house of God - locked. The doors firmly bolted, so that the monument protection is satisfied and no one lays hands on the precious works of art.
No one comes in - but who could come out? God Himself? Who or what can leave the church? The Holy Spirit?
II. What are people looking for?
Should the old traditions, the liturgies, the ornate candlesticks be conserved until eternity? Is the fear that the new Spirit will be given gate and door in the church so great? But what are the people looking for who hope for an open church? A space of silence in a noisy world. The candles that give hope in grief and suffering? The coolness of the old stones in the heated everyday life. What are you looking for, dear congregation?
Answers to the questions of the times. In the young, their doubts; in the old, their firm faith? A new Spirit that brings movement, not only because the doors are opened, but because hearts are touched and the longing to be close to God comes to rest, because I can again and again feel the peace that emanates from this place. If this door is open, it invites one to enter, then much can change, then we can breathe deeply, then it flows, then it permeates, then the Holy Spirit fills every cell of our body with His presence. Then it becomes Pentecost - not only 50 days after Easter, at any time in any place, even when the doors are locked, even the doors of the hearts, locked, blocked, clogged by the fears of life, constricted by the fear of tomorrow. Jesus does not need a door with a key and hinge, with a door handle and threshold. He, the Risen One, is suddenly there, in the midst of the crowd of frightened disciples. He is there to bring peace, to forgive sin, and to open doors of hearts. And for that He needs us, humans of the Spirit, of the Holy Spirit.
We hear the sermon text for today’s Pentecost Monday. It is in the Gospel of John, chapter 20:
19 But on the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were gathered and the doors were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you!” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit! 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
III. The Fear of the Disciples
The doors are locked, the thoughts and feelings are in disarray. The doors locked so that the situation does not escalate any further … more prisoners, more dead, more hopelessness. Like a vacuum: The words of the Master now sound hollow and empty. No change of government, no claim to rule in God’s Kingdom. He who wanted to bring his peace has been defeated, beaten, slain. The doors locked, also the doors to a radiant future, to a life sustained by the goodness of God and the love among people. This door is closed and none of you dares to open it. The soldiers could come and fetch them, and they might perhaps also falter like Peter: “You were also with this man from Nazareth!?” Would they have the strength and courage to stand by their Lord and Master? Is there any place on this earth for him and his kingdom? Were the old paths not simpler – the fat pastures of Egypt, the fawning upon the Roman occupiers. At that time they did not have to fear for their lives, but now …
A world has collapsed for them. It was not long ago that they traveled through the land on his commission. People opened their doors to them, invited them to eat. They asked about God’s Kingdom, how it could become more concrete in this time. When Jesus himself came to them, it flowed in streams. Often the space was not sufficient – a smile flits across their face at this memory. “Do you remember how the paralytic was lowered into the room on a bed?”, one recalls, and another gets shining eyes: “And Jesus healed him – in body and soul” And another mutters: “He helps others, but he could not save himself …and he leaves us alone.” Dark accusations, deep fear, dread of the Jews and the Romans … all of this paralyzed, closed their heart-doors to the words of hope that Jesus had given them. “Do not be afraid …I give you my peace …” Their life had become disordered, they no longer had sight for the one who had opened the door to God in their life.
And suddenly they do not believe their eyes. Is fear playing an evil game with them? Jesus stands in the room and no one has seen him come! They look to the door, to the windows – everything is still as they themselves had locked and barricaded it. And there they were again, these soothing warm words. Like a withered flower that is watered and each of its blossoms stretches towards heaven; like a door that can finally be opened, because one of the 19 keys does fit – of course the last one; like a green garden that after a long winter pause is suddenly, as the sun stands higher, dipped into fresh green. The images cannot be more joyful and relieving, comforting: “Peace be with you!” By this greeting they recognized him and by the wound marks – signs of human brutality. Now a turning: the proof of God’s working in life and in death, so that stones are rolled away, tombs are blown open, the dead rise, the door to Paradise stands open …”
They rub their eyes, check the lock on the door, let him show them the pierced hands and the side again and again. Yes, it is him: “On the third day risen from the dead …”
IV. He is there
He is there. He is there and with him his divine power. His presence causes the feelings of the friends to turn 180 degrees: From fear becomes confidence, from dread the joy in life, from hopelessness the courage to go new ways. Jesus takes them into his peace, moves them, opens doors where everything was locked and gives the air and the desire for life. Air that had run out for them, air with which they fill their lungs and hearts, breath of life, breath of life as at God’s creation at the beginning of the world.
You may live anew: your sins are forgiven, your despair forgotten, your life blossoms anew. It is as if a fresh wind sweeps through the darkened and locked room. It is as if life becomes possible anew – in the midst of what is old. It is as if chains of unfreedom are blasted apart, it is as if doors that had been locked forever open again – and this is not only breath of life for the small group of disciples. It is to be new strength and divine peace for all who are crushed by failure and guilt, for all who hope in this new community and in God’s breath of life, his Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit blows, as is well known, where He wills. But if doors are locked, if the heart does not open, if the creaking door of the church is firmly bolted, then even the power of God has its difficulty.
Pentecost 2026
That would indeed be a Pentecost near and far, if during these feast days the churches were actually open, invitingly decorated with birch green at the door. From the church tower, the church flag with the purple cross on a white background flutters down. God’s renewing breath of life would make ideas bubble up, how we could perceive and proclaim His presence. He is there, yes! But where do we discover His wounds as proof?
Some get to work: “We will move the church pews to the side and take chairs, arrange them in a circle, so that we can hear from one another what moves us, which spirit dwells in us, where we draw our breath of life from and where we seek it when it is lacking to us …
One has a guitar and sings in a quiet voice “Kyrie eleison”. “Do we have to sing the old words that no one understands?”, comes an objection. “What speaks from your heart, what lets God enter you? “I like Joan Osborne: “One Of Us”. God is one of us, very close, very near … We can listen to the song on YouTube and sing along!”
“And who will preach?” And at the word “sermon” comes great groaning. “Each could tell what he, what she has experienced with God – and all together is our sermon!” “Or we go through the church and seek God’s spirit on the images at the altar!”
“I have the-i-i-i idea: We go out, lie down on a meadow and observe how the dandelion parachutes fly into the sky!!”
God’s Spirit gifts new life, moves, opens gate and door. Or do we want to remain anxiously in the eternally yesterday? Amen.
From the Sermon Workshop
Four Questions on Sermon Preparation to Pastor Ret. Bert Hitzegrad
1. What preaching situation do you have in mind?
I have a quite ordinary “Pentecost congregation” in mind – that means: a congregation that on the second feast day is even more thinned out than at other times and feast days. Perhaps one or another vacationer has strayed into the service. The joy is great to find an open church door and to be in a church where, despite vacation times, mergers of congregations and representation needs, a service is celebrated. To the joy on the one hand belongs on the other hand also the frustrating experience that the so overflowing Pentecost feast leads only few people into the church. Does the Spirit of God not act intensely enough, are the doors of the hearts locked?
2. What has inspired you in sermon preparation?
“the doors were locked out of fear” The image of the locked door has particularly moved me. The “doors”, actually an Advent theme, create safe spaces, can block, but also open paths. Very concretely I thought of the frustration when a church door is locked and there is no chance to enter the church space. The image can also be transferred: Where are heart doors locked, to let God’s Spirit outside as well? But does He need doors?
3. What discovery will continue to accompany you?
The symbolic power of the “doors” is still to be spelled out further:
1. Doors can be locked from the inside and from the outside. Do we keep our church doors locked from the inside because we do not want to be deprived of old traditions, songs, and forms…?
2. Locked doors also provide a sense of security. Anyone who opens the door and enters disturbs this feeling.
3. Who is the “door opener” for God’s Spirit? Is it He Himself? Is it grace, not will…?
4. What does this sermon owe to the final editing?
The notes on the sermon will lead to an even more intensive work with the possibilities of language. Often, it is a conscious making of the intention and the goal in order to “sharpen” the formulations once more.
These impulses will remain beyond the concrete sermon work. THANK YOU!

Liebe Gemeinde!
I. Verschlossene Kirchentüren
Gott selbst? Wer oder was kann die Kirche verlassen? Der Heilige Geist?
II. Was suchen Menschen?
Was suchen Sie, liebe Gemeinde?
Kein Regierungswechsel, kein Herrschaftsanspruch in Gottes Reich.
„Ich mag Joan Osborne: „One Of Us“.
Amen.
Aus der Predigtwerkstatt
Vier Fragen zur Predigtvorbereitung an Pastor i.R. Bert Hitzegrad
3. Wer ist der „Türöffner“ für Gottes Geist? Ist er es selbst? Ist es Gnade, nicht Wollen …?
DANKE!
