On the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day and the Dementia Week in which we find ourselves, I would like to address dementia today, a disease that is increasing rapidly worldwide.
My brothers and sisters! Revered believers!
Let us together envision the following picture: All the beautiful memories we have gathered with our loved ones, of which we say, “I will never forget this,” disappear one by one from our memory. Let us imagine that we confuse the days and get lost on our way home. Let us imagine that we have difficulties speaking and cannot express our thoughts in a reasonable manner. Let us imagine that we even struggle with our daily basic needs and become increasingly dependent on others. Let us imagine that we look at our loved ones as if they were strangers, and gradually distance ourselves from our social environment, drifting increasingly into loneliness. All these things are signs of a tragic disease process referred to as “dementia.” These symptoms are not mere fantasies, but are experienced daily by almost two million affected individuals in Germany. May our exalted Creator grant healing to all the sick.
My brothers and sisters!
Dementia is a severe illness caused by damage to the nerve cells in the brain. This, in turn, leads to disturbances in brain functions such as remembering, thinking, and deciding. Dementia often encounters us in advanced, frail old age, as is also hinted at in the Quran.[1] However, we should be aware that dementia can actually threaten people of all ages. Particularly in countries with intensive industrialization, this disease occurs most frequently, and its prevalence increases in parallel with the aging of the population. Worldwide, there are more than 55 million people with dementia. If no measures are taken, it is predicted that this number will rise to 140 million in 30 years. Experts emphasize the importance of regular mental exercises to keep the brain active. They recommend maintaining strong social connections, paying attention to a healthy diet, and performing various physical activities to preserve our vitality. Some commands, prohibitions, and recommendations of Islam also have a protective effect against dementia or can delay the progression of this disease. In this sense, the following principles and recommendations are particularly important: We should always engage with something new as soon as we finish a task[2] and perform prayer and worship services properly and regularly.[3] A diet consisting of permissible (halal) and pure foods is also of significance.[4] In addition, we should actively engage in the community to strengthen our social relationships,[5] and keep our memory alive through the remembrance of God (Dhikr).[6]
In the case of illnesses, early diagnosis is just as important as treatment. However, for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, early diagnosis is particularly crucial. Please do not hesitate to see a doctor. Our ancestors said: “What you can do today, do not put off until tomorrow.” Let us not forget that the exalted Allah has created a cure for every illness[7] and therefore let us not neglect our treatment. Let us be extremely patient and understanding towards people with dementia. Let us approach them in a friendly, caring, and merciful manner. Let us strive to embody the ease mentioned in the verse: “Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”[8] Even if our good deeds are no longer remembered by people with dementia, we must not forget that they will not go unnoticed by the exalted Allah[9].
