The Balance of Knowledge and Action

no name given · IGMG Freitagspredigt · 2026-08-13 · Source

Knowledge · main message Responsibility · carrying Truthfulness · carrying

Knowledge and action are two complementary values in Islam that are inseparably bound together: knowledge without implementation remains incomplete, and action without knowledge stands on no firm foundation.

For knowledge remains incomplete when it is not put into practice. And action can stand on no firm foundation when it is not carried by knowledge.

The text is an Islamic sermon that highlights the central importance of knowledge in Islam. It refers to the first word of revelation, 'Read!', and to Quranic verses and hadiths that present the acquisition of knowledge as an obligation and a blessed deed. The core message is that knowledge and action are inseparably bound together: knowledge without implementation remains incomplete, and action without knowledge stands on no firm foundation. The text quotes a dua of the Prophet in which he earnestly seeks refuge from useless knowledge, and a saying of the companion Muaz ibn Jabal, who emphasizes that Allah rewards only for knowledge that is put into practice. As a contemporary reference, the easier access to knowledge through technical means is mentioned. The text calls on the listeners to perform prayer with devotion, to speak sincerely, and to help those in need concretely. It closes with a prayer that asks for useful knowledge, its implementation, and exemplary conduct.

Dear Muslims! Allah attaches great importance to knowledge and encourages people to learn. Thus, the first command of the first revelation was “Read!”. This divine command shows us the central position of knowledge in Islam. In another place in the Quran it says: “Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Truly, only the understanding ones are admonished.” [1] Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s) also considered the acquisition of knowledge as an important duty for every Muslim. In a narration he says: “Whoever travels a path to acquire knowledge, Allah will ease for him the path to Paradise.” [2] Thus, he gives those who strive on the path of knowledge the glad tidings that they will share in the mercy and support of Allah. For knowledge leads people to recognize their Creator, to understand the purpose of their creation, and to guide their lives into beautiful channels. The knowledge that Islam praises is not merely knowledge that remains in the head. True knowledge is that which leads people to good character, righteous action, and servitude. Therefore, in our religion, knowledge and action are two values that complement each other. Knowledge teaches us what is right. Action implements what has been learned in life. In other words: Knowledge is a light that illuminates our path. Action is the walking on this illuminated path. Beloved brothers and sisters! In the Quran, faith and righteous action are mentioned together. This shows us how important it is that knowledge is implemented. Our Prophet (s) made the following Dua: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that brings no benefit, from a heart that feels no awe, from a Nafs that is never satisfied, and from a Dua that is not answered.” [3] One of the great Companions, Muaz ibn Djabal (r), also gave us an important indication: “However much knowledge you may possess, Allah will not reward you for your knowledge as long as you do not implement it.” The noble Companions strove to implement every verse they heard in their lives. They never refrained from living out their knowledge. Dear Muslims! Today, access to knowledge is as easy as never before thanks to technical possibilities. However, what is important is to what extent knowledge is reflected in our lives. It is not enough to know the high rank of prayer. We must also perform it with devotion. It is not enough to learn the significance of sincerity. We must also speak sincerely in every situation. It is not enough to know the reward of mutual help. We must actually reach out a hand to those in need. For knowledge remains incomplete if it is not implemented. And action cannot stand on a firm foundation if it is not supported by knowledge. Let us strive to continue acquiring knowledge. And let us also bring what we have learned into our lives. Let us adorn our knowledge with our character and our Ibadas with sincerity. May our Creator make us servants who acquire useful knowledge, implement their knowledge, and are an example of good to their surroundings. Amin! Verehrte Muslime! Amin!
