Authoritarian forces use apocalyptic thinking to cast themselves as figures of light, and the Giordano Bruno Foundation counters this with confidence in the future and solution-oriented approaches.
Authoritarian forces exploit the distorted image of a “dark future” to cast themselves as figures of light. That they do so by drawing on the biblical “Apocalypse” (“Revelation of John”), as US billionaire Peter Thiel does, underscores the religious character of this strategy.
The text introduces the current issue of the bruno. annual magazine of the Giordano Bruno Foundation and frames it under the title “Apocalypse no!”. It claims that authoritarian forces use the image of a dark future to cast themselves as figures of light, and refers to the biblical Apocalypse as a religious motif of this strategy. The core message of the magazine is to regain confidence in the future and to strengthen solution-oriented approaches over problem-oriented perspectives. As an example, the concept “Cradle to Cradle” is mentioned, which develops concrete ecological solutions. The text refers to an interview contribution by the Central Council of the Non-Confessional, which addresses constructive proposals to decision-makers, as well as to the Working Group on Political Islam, which stands against Islamism and anti-Muslim sentiment. A poster motif from the “Acceptance Campaign for Diversity in Islam” shows a gay Muslim couple and refers to the article on sexual self-determination and political oppression. The text refers to the attack on the Berlin CSD by Abdul Ballout and reads the magazine contributions as a preemptive commentary on it. It emphasizes that religious zealots react particularly aversively to sexual self-determination rights, and describes the dangers of Islamism as a product of ideologically misguided sexual energy.

The current issue of the bruno. annual magazine inspires confidence in the future
“Apocalypse no!”
Authoritarian forces exploit the distorted image of a “dark future” to cast themselves as figures of light. The fact that they, like US billionaire Peter Thiel, draw on the biblical “Apocalypse” (the “Revelation of John”) underscores the religious character of this strategy. The Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs) has always sought to counter apocalyptic thinking, which also explains the cover story of the current bruno. magazine: “Go Future! The open future and its friends.”

In the cover story of the issue (from p. 50), Florian Chefai explains why it is particularly important today to regain confidence in the future, rather than hoping for the return of a “good old time” that, upon closer inspection, never existed. To revive the belief in possible progress, which is essential for any society, it is necessary, according to Chefai, to strengthen solution-oriented approaches over problem-oriented perspectives. What this means in the ecological field is illustrated in the article, among other things, by the “Cradle to Cradle” (C2C) concept co-developed by Michael Braungart (gbs advisory board), which develops concrete solutions for a “smarter metabolism with nature.”
The approach pursued by Philipp Möller with the Central Council of the Non-Religious is also solution-oriented (see the extensive interview with the chair of the Central Council from p. 18). Instead of complaining about politicians who lag behind the societal process of secularization, he approaches decision-makers with constructive proposals. The Working Group on Political Islam acts similarly, having been able to celebrate considerable successes in the short time of its existence. The AK Polis focuses “Against Islamism AND Anti-Muslim Sentiment” (cf. p. 30 ff.) – a dual strategy that causes confusion in both the left and right camps.
A poster motif of the “Acceptance Campaign for Diversity in Islam,” carried out in 2026 among others by the AK Polis, shows a gay Muslim couple – referring to the topic addressed in the article “Who controls sex controls society” (from p. 42). The text explains what is at stake in the dispute over abortion and gender identity, and why sexual and political oppression are closely linked. How fiercely contested the field of sexual politics has always been is revealed, not least, by the extensive portrait of the controversial writer and gbs advisory board member Esther Vilar (from p. 6), who shook the republic with her book “The Trained Man” and celebrated her 90th birthday last year.
Anticipated Comment on the CSD Attack
Work on the current bruno. issue was completed on July 20. Five days later, the Islamist Abdul Ballout carried out an attack on the Berlin CSD. This event could logically not be taken into account in the issue – and yet the two bruno. articles on “Islamism & Anti-Muslim Sentiment” and “Sex & Control” read like an anticipated comment on the Berlin attack. For it is by no means a coincidence that religious zealots react particularly aversively to sexual self-determination rights. “In fact,” it says in the magazine, “the dangers emanating from Islamism are, among other things, the product of ideologically misguided sexual energy.”
As in previous issues, the magazine contains a detailed chronicle of the previous year (from p. 60) as well as a statement of the foundation’s finances (p. 74). The 84-page bruno. annual magazine 2026, which was again printed in accordance with the “Cradle to Cradle” concept, is distributed free of charge by the Giordano Bruno Foundation. Approximately 7,000 copies of the print edition are currently being sent directly to bruno. subscribers. From now on, the magazine can also be downloaded digitally as a PDF document. The bruno. issues from previous years remain available via the foundation’s website.

„Apocalypse no!“
-Magazins erklärt: „Go Future!
