Vegans in the German-speaking region are predominantly secular and atheist in outlook; the correlation between worldview and political positioning does exist, but is statistically small.
The respondents take a critical stance towards religions in the majority and tend markedly more strongly towards atheist and agnostic beliefs.
The text presents the results of a survey of 2,161 women and men who are vegan in the German-speaking region. The study was conducted by the psychologist Guido F. Gebauer on behalf of the dating platform Gleichklang. More than half of the respondents reject religion or strongly reject it; only 12.8 percent describe themselves as religious or strongly religious. Non-religious spirituality is also rated as neutral or rejected by the majority. Secular worldviews such as atheism and agnosticism are the most widespread. The correlation between worldview and political positioning is statistically significant but small. The study thus contradicts earlier claims that veganism is closely linked to religion, esotericism, or conservative worldviews. The results are intended to serve as a data basis for future debates.

Secular and Atheistic: A Study on the Worldview of Vegans
A comprehensive survey in the German-speaking region sheds new light on the worldview of vegans. The results underpin the criticism of common stereotypes regarding an alleged affinity for esotericism or religion among people who avoid animal products: The respondents are predominantly critical of religions and tend significantly more toward atheistic and agnostic beliefs.

More than half of the respondents, 56.6 percent, reject or strongly reject religion, 30.6 percent are neutral toward religion, and only 12.8 percent describe themselves as “religious” or “strongly religious.” This is the result of a survey of 2,161 vegans aged between 18 and 84. It was conducted by psychologist Guido F. Gebauer on behalf of the dating platform “Gleichklang,” which targets ecologically and progressively oriented people. The respondents, predominantly from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, were approached via various channels, including “Gleichklang,” Facebook, Reddit, and vegan newsletters.
In Germany, about one percent of the population eats vegan, i.e., purely plant-based. Of these, more than 70 percent are women, as other studies have shown. This gender ratio is also reflected in the current study, which was participated in by 1,417 women, 639 men, and 105 non-binary individuals.
In addition to organized religion, the extent to which respondents orient themselves toward non-religious spirituality was also examined. Here too, the majority showed rejection, albeit with slightly higher approval rates. 41.3 percent express a neutral stance, 31.8 percent reject or strongly reject spirituality. Only 26.9 percent have a spiritual orientation, and 5.2 percent have a strong spiritual orientation.
In contrast, secular worldviews are far more widespread. 26 percent of the participants identify as atheists, and 12.4 percent as agnostics. Among the believers, Buddhists form the largest group with 8 percent, followed by Christians with 4.7 percent. Smaller proportions are accounted for by adherents of Janism (2.8 percent), esoteric spirituality (2.6 percent), Anthroposophy (2.2 percent), Hinduism (2.0 percent), Judaism (0.6 percent), and Islam (0.3 percent).
Another central result of the study concerns the relationship between worldview and political positioning. Although statistically significant correlations can be established, they are consistently small: Only 6.2 percent of the differences in political attitudes can be statistically explained by attitudes toward religion and spirituality. This means: More than 93 percent are shaped by other factors, such as social situation, education, personal values, and age.
Nevertheless, according to study author Gebauer, the data show two – weakly pronounced – orientations: On the one hand, a turn toward religious or spiritual concepts such as Christianity, Buddhism, esotericism, or Anthroposophy occurs somewhat more frequently in conjunction with conservative and more authoritarian political attitudes. On the other hand, a critical attitude toward religion and spirituality, as well as an atheistic self-positioning, is slightly more common in conjunction with left-oriented positions and the rejection of authoritarian thinking. However: Individual religious and spiritual movements do indeed show overlaps with classically non-conservative concerns in detail, for example in peace policy, anti-colonialism, or refugee aid.
The study's results are particularly illuminating against the backdrop of earlier publications that claimed a connection between veganism and religion, esotericism, as well as conservative or right-wing worldviews. In this regard, study author Gebauer cites, as an example, the works by authors Jutta Ditfurth and Mira Landwehr. A critical engagement with these theses was already provided by hpd author Colin Goldner in a book review. In it, he argued that Landwehr's claims lack a solid empirical foundation. The results of the now available study provide a data basis for future debates on the ideological positioning of vegan individuals and organizations.

Thank you for the…
Thank you for the interesting presentation.
It would have been nice to have comparative data with the population average and a reference to the source where one could look up details. A statement on the representativeness of the survey would also be interesting.
