The report of the Religious Liberty Commission does not serve to protect religious freedom, but is an ideological instrument of the Christian right to abolish the separation of church and state in the United States and to undermine the secular constitutional state.

The commission's report thus reveals itself for what it is at its core: an ideological opinion written to please the Christian right, disguised as a defense of constitutional rights.

The text analyzes a draft of the report of the Religious Liberty Commission appointed by Donald Trump. The author criticizes that the paper constructs an alleged threat to religious freedom in order to weaken the strict separation of church and state in the United States. As evidence of its ideological character, it cites absurd intellectual-historical accusations against thinkers such as Nietzsche and Foucault. The report recommends, among other things, the repeal of the Johnson Amendment in order to make church funds available for the Republican election campaign. It also calls for judicial appointments to be made in such a way that religious cases are decided in line with the interests of the Christian right. The author assesses the document as an ideological opinion written to please, which is designed to deliberately hollow out the secular constitutional state. He warns of an erosion of pluralism and a disproportionate political influence of religious institutions at the expense of the non-religious.

International Analysis God’s Funds for the Election Campaign: How Trump’s Commission Wants to Tear Down the Barriers Between Church and Politics A draft by the Religious Liberty Commission appointed by Donald Trump claims an alleged curtailment of religious freedoms in the USA. In addition to absurd intellectual-historical blame assignments, the document provides concrete recommendations to soften the strict separation of state and church. Thus, the report reveals itself as an ideological favor report for the Christian right, aimed at deliberately hollowing out the secular constitutional state. Sebastian Schnelle 04.09.2026 1 The US Constitution and the Bible: Religious hardliners want to soften the separation of state and church, allegedly to protect religious freedom. Photo: Anthony Garand via Unsplash Unsplash License The Religious Liberty Commission (Commission for Religious Freedom) appointed by Donald Trump has submitted a draft of its first report. In over 200 pages, it fantasizes about a curtailment of religious freedoms for Christians and argues, under the pretext of fighting for freedom of opinion, for abandoning the strict separation of state and church. To this end, arguments are brought forward that, on the one hand, have long been circulating in similar form, but on the other hand are barely surpassed in eccentricity. Thus, Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault, and Jean-Paul Sartre are supposed to be responsible for the decline of religious freedoms in the USA, with the name Martin Heidegger also thrown into the ring, and one asks oneself what exactly should connect these four thinkers, if they even have any influence on the religious right in America? Yes, Nietzsche wrote the famous sentence, “God is dead,” but that was already in 1882 in “The Gay Science.” That is a mere 144 years ago and is supposed to threaten the religious freedoms of Americans today? The idea that without God no morality is possible and that nihilism would follow has often been claimed from the religious side and is mentioned again in the report. However, it has been refuted both by centuries of secular practice and by shelf-meters of works on moral philosophy. But are Christians in the USA actually becoming a threatened minority? While in Germany the non-confessional with 48 percent now constitute the largest population group, closely followed by Christians with 44 percent (hpd reported), in the USA, 65 to 70 percent of the population are still Christians. However, something has also changed there. In surveys from 1950 to 1990, about 90 percent of all Americans still identified as Christians, and since then a clear decline can be observed. Nevertheless, surveys in 2012 still showed that nine out of ten Americans would be willing to vote for a presidential candidate who is Black, a woman, or Jewish, while only 54 percent would be willing to give their vote to an atheist. All these facts, however, do not stop the commission from submitting twelve proposals on how the religious freedoms of “all Americans” could be strengthened. In addition to the proposal to collect data and educate the population about their rights, particularly with regard to the First Amendment, which guarantees the right to free exercise of religion as well as the right to freely express one’s opinion, there are also demands to fill judicial positions in such a way that they “decide cases on religious freedom objectively and according to their actual circumstances […]”. Also, the so-called “Johnson Amendment” should be repealed, which prohibits tax-exempt churches from intervening in election campaigns. This is supposed to make the enormous funds present in religious organizations usable for the Republicans in the election campaign. The Commission’s report thus reveals itself to be what it fundamentally is: an ideological favor report for the Christian right, disguised as a defense of constitutional rights. Under the guise of religious freedom, a privileging of conservative Christian actors is being pushed forward, which gradually undermines the secular rule of law. Should the Commission’s recommendations gain traction, the United States faces not a strengthening of the freedom of “all Americans,” but a progressive erosion of the separation of state and church. The targeted dilution of the Johnson Amendment and an ideologically inclined staffing of the judiciary would secure disproportionate political influence for religious institutions. This would come at the expense of a pluralistic society and to the detriment of all those who do not profess a faith. For the secular constitutional state, this draft is not a shield, but an attack scenario. Has not the history of humanity already taught us that religion and politics always come at the expense of freedom? Religion is always invented abuse of power. Politics that takes its voters seriously should concern itself ONLY with urgent grievances and keep away from religious matters. Humanity is currently on the path of saying goodbye to any religion, but politicians like D.T. want to jump on the religion train and re-establish this invented madness to keep citizens in check with the lie stories of religions. How much longer must we be bound by these charlatans? Freedom is the highest good a person can have, above all the freedom of the spirit. Reply
