Religion is abused by groups that claim divine authority and keep their followers from critical thinking; vigilance and adherence to reliable sources are needed against this.

Let us therefore avoid secret organisations and closed groups and be careful in dealing with them. Let us not hand over our reason and our will to others.

The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB Sermon Commission, delivered on the anniversary of the coup attempt of 15 July 2016. It warns that religion is being abused by people and groups who claim divine attributes or assert direct revelations. The coup attempt by FETÖ, which attacked the Turkish parliament, is cited as an example. The text lists common characteristics of such groups: the canonisation of leaders, the claim of divine dreams, the spread of fabricated miracles, the suppression of critical thinking, the exclusion of other Muslims, and the claim of ownership over the religion. The sermon calls for vigilance, for learning religion from reliable sources, for avoiding secret organisations, and for not surrendering one's own reason. It concludes with a prayer for those who fell in the coup attempt and a reference to brotherhood among Muslims.

Our exalted Lord has not left humans to themselves. He has conveyed the principles of religion to us through His Books and shown their practical implementation through the Prophets. After the passing of our Prophet (s), scholars—as experts in this field—passed this legacy on to subsequent generations, thereby illuminating the path of humanity. However, unfortunately, religions have frequently been misused throughout history. Individuals and groups with malicious intentions have exploited the profound impact of religion on humans to pursue their own interests. Throughout human history, there are repeatedly individuals who have claimed divine attributes or prophethood and exploited religion. The devil also approaches humans in a similar manner. As depicted in the Quran, he approaches humans, among other things, from the left and from the right. His approach from the right means that he presents evil in the guise of good—this is one of his most treacherous and dangerous tactics. This is precisely the method of individuals and groups who misuse religion for their purposes. Just nine years ago—on July 15, 2016—a coup attempt by the FETÖ occurred. Even the Turkish Parliament, the symbol of the popular will, was attacked and damaged during this. The same corrupt mindset stood behind this attack. Beloved brothers and sisters! How do we recognize such groups that seemingly represent the truth but in reality follow the path of error? To find an answer to this question, it is necessary to point out the common characteristics of these groups, looking at both the past and the present: They attribute a kind of sanctity to their leaders. They claim to receive direct instructions from Allah and to be guided by divine dreams or inspirations. They spread fabricated miracles to captivate people. They keep their followers from independent thinking and critical questioning to secure their absolute authority and expect blind obedience. They exclude other Muslims who do not belong to their group. They see themselves as the owners of the religion and declare those who do not follow them to be misguided. Dear brothers and sisters! History repeats itself if no lessons are learned from it. Let us be vigilant and mindful so as not to experience similar problems and similar suffering again. Let us learn our religion from reliable sources. Sole, absolute authority belongs only to Allah. Let us not elevate humans to an inviolable position. True Islam is clear and transparent. Therefore, let us avoid secret organizations and closed groups and be cautious in dealing with them. Let us not hand over our reason and our will to others. Let us not give a chance to those who want to misuse our beautiful religion for their vile goals. Never forget the following tradition of our Prophet (s): “The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He does not betray him, does not lie to him, does not leave him in the lurch. The honor, the wealth, and the life of a Muslim are inviolable for the other.” At the end of my sermon, on the occasion of the anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt, I once again ask our exalted Lord for mercy for our martyrs who sacrificed their lives to defend human rights, freedom, and the will of the people. May Allah grant the survivors and the injured a long, healthy, and blessed life. The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Quran, al-A’râf, 7/17. [2] Quran, Al-i Imran, 3/189. Die DITIB-Predigtkommission [1] Koran, al-A’râf, 7/17. [2] Koran, Al-i Imran, 3/189.
