Ingratitude toward the gifts of Allah and toward fellow human beings is a human weakness that can be overcome through conscious gratitude as an inner state and as behavior.

Ingratitude means being blind to the gifts of Allah; it means ignoring the gifts and blessings and forgetting the good that has befallen one.

The text addresses ingratitude as a human weakness that is named in the Quran and in hadiths. It defines ingratitude as blindness to the gifts of Allah and as the forgetting or denial of favors. As examples, it mentions looking into the possessions of others, forgetting the efforts of parents and spouses, and withholding thanks from fellow human beings. As a countermeasure, gratitude (shukr) is presented, which is described as an inner state and as behavior. The text calls on the audience to remember Allah not only in times of distress but also in times of well-being and to fulfill their duties as His servants. The sermon is directed at the congregation and combines theological statements with practical moral guidance.

Ingratitude: Blindness to the Gifts of Allah (25.07.2025) Dear Brothers and Sisters! Esteemed Believers! Allah, the Exalted, speaks of many weaknesses inherent in human nature. According to the Quran, man was created as a weak being.[1] By nature, he is forgetful,[2] prone to stinginess[3] and quarrelsomeness,[4] hasty,[5] impatient, and greedy.[6] Another negative trait is his ingratitude. Our Almighty Creator reveals this fact in the Surah Adiyat as follows: “Indeed, man is truly ungrateful to his Lord, and for this he is himself a witness.”[7] Dear Brothers and Sisters! Ingratitude means being blind to the gifts of Allah; it means ignoring the gifts and blessings and forgetting the good that has befallen one. According to the words of our Prophet (s), ingratitude means not mentioning the gifts and denying them. In life, there are many examples of ingratitude. It is ingratitude to consider the blessings bestowed upon us as a matter of course and not to appreciate their value. It is ingratitude to look at what others have while overlooking what we ourselves have, and ultimately to be dissatisfied with our lives. Therefore, we should not focus on what we do not have, but rather know how to appreciate the gifts we already possess. For the Exalted Allah gives man both gifts and difficulties only to the extent that he can bear them. This corresponds to His Justice. Of course, we may strive to achieve better opportunities, but in doing so, we should not fall into greed. Dear Brothers and Sisters! To deny the gifts of our Lord is ingratitude towards Allah. Every breath, every sip of water, all the countless gifts bestowed upon us are all mercies of our Creator. Not appreciating these gifts is ingratitude. For this reason, we must never forget our Lord, who bestows all gifts upon us. We must never neglect our duties as His servants. We should remember Allah not only in times of distress, but also in times of abundance and well-being. Let us not forget: ingratitude does not only appear towards our Creator, but also towards our fellow human beings. It is ingratitude when we forget the efforts of our parents or the selflessness and exertion of our spouse. It is ingratitude when we deny a helping hand that was extended to us in distress after overcoming our crisis. It is also ingratitude when we withhold a small thank-you from our fellow human beings. Our Prophet (s) warned us in this regard with the following words: “Whoever does not thank people, does not thank Allah either.”[8] This Hadith makes it clear that gratitude is not only an attitude towards Allah, but also a fundamental moral responsibility towards people. Brothers and Sisters! The cure for the disease of ingratitude is gratitude (Shukr). Gratitude means appreciating a favor done, knowing its value, and acting accordingly. Gratitude is not merely an utterance with the tongue - it is a state of the heart that is reflected in our behavior. The grateful person recognizes the value of his gifts and strengthens his bond with Allah. Thus, his life becomes blessed. O Allah! Do not let us belong to the ungrateful! Fill our hearts with gratitude, adorn our tongues with praises, and grant us a life of mindfulness towards Your gifts! (Amin) The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Quran, Nisa, 4/28.
