People who find themselves in seemingly unchangeable and painful life situations can experience transformative healing and new hope through attentive awareness and Jesus's invitation into their lives.
The sermon interprets the parable of the blind beggar in Jericho (Luke 18) as a parable for the human experience of stagnation and dependence. The preacher argues that the blind man did not make his peace with his situation, but that through his question about the passing crowd he remained awake to something new. This is presented as a counter-model to the modern tendency to resign oneself in stuck life situations or relationships and to lose one's attentiveness. The listeners are encouraged to remain attentive even in seemingly hopeless phases and to invite Jesus into their lives, rather than to ward him off as a source of disturbance. The text emphasizes that change often becomes possible through a personal encounter with the Divine that breaks through the accustomed routine. It calls for overcoming one's own passivity and actively seeking healing and new possibilities.

I read from Luke 18, verses 35 to 43. This is the Lothar translation. Now it came to pass, as he came near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. And when he heard the multitude passing by, he inquired what this noise was. They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. And he cried out, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. And those who went before him rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, saying, Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he had been brought near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
Well, I’m up here, and some say, he doesn’t need a microphone, you can hear him anyway. But for some who have a bit of difficulty, it’s quite good to be understood. Yes, I could have had Sarah sit here for a while longer and listen, listen to the songs, but I have to do something now. What you have told us is a kind of parallel to today’s text. Yes, it was good. I think you also thanked us, I don’t know. In any case, it has something interesting about it. There are situations, I don’t know how it is with you, but we have come to terms with them. Do you know that? When things don’t change, when one has the impression that one is treading water. When relationships have been, well, how should I put it, in a state of weakness for so long and nothing changes in a relationship, that costs strength. And that exists in all areas of our life. If we are honest, we all have certain construction sites that occupy us more or less again and again. That also take up our time, that are laborious, that lead to one sometimes becoming sick in the soul, because all of this is, so to speak, everything is stretched thin by these situations and we ultimately lose more and more of our, well, I’ll phrase it this way, our joy. If I am telling this right now, you might perhaps think of one or another thing in your personal area, you can only judge that. But is it always the case that we must come to terms with things that ultimately are not changeable, at least not for the time being? Or are we willing to listen anew, to be attentive? There are topics where we have the impression that nothing changes and then one slowly loses attention. One no longer feels like it. One wants to hear something else, see something else. Everyone of us knows that, because it is always a kind of loop that repeats itself, repeats itself, and one becomes tired, one becomes weary, and one no longer feels like it. In this story that we have just heard from the Gospel of Luke, it also becomes quite clear that a person who has, in a certain way, come to terms with his life situation, has come to terms with it. There is not much coming, there is nothing new coming. And I will go through this story with you once more, a little bit. Sometimes that is very helpful and I would like to share some thoughts with you, ultimately what things are contained there that can perhaps practically change the situation in our life. There are things where we sometimes think they are hopeless, but there are also possibilities for things to change without us properly perceiving it beforehand. Therefore, I take you into this story once more and that sometimes does good. I have been studying the Gospel of Luke lately, in my quiet time, and you think, well, the story of Zacchaeus or the story of wealth, we know all that. We know how it ends. But that is simply not the case, if I repeat these stories, if
When I look at it again, I always notice that there is something in it that I have never truly recognized before, and I am myself amazed at how God works, how Jesus works. And therefore, I want to share with you this morning these thoughts that I have, and which I also wish to express this morning. If it is written here, “Now it came to pass, when he was come near to Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the way side begging. As I have said, sometimes situations do not change because we think it is always the same. But here we learn from this story that suddenly a restlessness arose when Jesus was near Jericho. That was the end of the calm. And there was an enormous crowd of people, as I can well imagine. People came together who had perhaps heard the name of Jesus before, but had not recognized him himself, had not known him. And this was now the opportunity to encounter this Jesus. And they set out on their way nearby. And among others, a man was sitting there, who had always been sitting there, because he had no other possibilities to change his life. He was blind, he was dependent, dependent on people who had put something into his coin cup every day, and he had been able to survive to some extent. He had to come to terms with the situation, one might say. Because he was good for nothing. Forgive me this word, but he was good for nothing, rather he was dependent. And this is ultimately a word that perhaps also troubles you here in certain situations, in your personal life, one would always like to be independent, but sometimes we are indeed very dependent on many things and reliant on them. And we usually do not want that at all. We do not want to be dependent. We want to decide for ourselves. “A man is his own master, a woman is her own master,” as they say. And we want to do things that we simply want to do, and nothing else. But each of us is caught in dependencies, just like this blind man. And the question is, what kind of dependencies are these? The second thing I want to tell you, this blind man, he might have come to terms with his situation now. But he did not. Despite his situation, he was still awake, in the truest sense of the word, awake for new things. He had not switched off. He had not come to terms with it, but he hears this restlessness and he asks the question, what that might be. He hears the crowd and inquired, and he inquired, what that might be. He still participates in life, one might say. He could say, I do not see so well. I do not know what is going on. It is just like that, I sit here, well, if the others have joy, wonderful. But what does that have to do with my life? With my life. Many people hear of Jesus and sometimes say to themselves that too. What does Jesus have to do with my life? The world is quite a different one in which we live. There is often a lot of pushing and shoving. One often has to deal with things. That costs strength, that costs energy. And sometimes I am too tired for it, too weak for it, because everything is always the same. Nothing changes. What impresses me about this man is that he did not come to terms with his situation, but that he inquires, what that might be. That is the encouraging thing, that he does not stand still, that he does not take part, but that he wants to take part. And the people who go up to the front, what kind of people were they? I would say, it was a kind of Christian spectator. Do you know that too? It is a very special thing. When something special happens, then the crowd is there and grumbles. Jesus is here, we have already heard many about him. Now let him do it. Christian spectators. I find that a great word. Sometimes I also feel like that, like being a spectator. When it somehow succeeds, when I make progress, when I have insights that I perhaps do not even
If no one else had, then I would go through fire for Jesus in the truest sense of the word. But that is not the case. That is not the case. And for certain people among you, certainly as well. We say, no, there are gaps, there are things that are sometimes insurmountable for me. And this man receives an answer from these, so to speak, Christian onlookers. They tell him, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. What all sorts of things in our lives pass us by? There are things that never change. And they always pass by. But when Jesus comes into play, when Jesus comes into play, dear ones, then we should be wide awake. Then we should not oversleep or push aside what He wishes from us, because our lives are often different. Rather, we should be awake. For my personal spiritual life, I wish for that. And I hope that most of you also wish for that. But there are things where we simply pass by. We do not bring Jesus into the conversation. And that is sometimes not so easy. He could now say, well, it is good that Jesus passes by, but what does that have to do with my life? Good, rejoice, I can tell you that. But how often has he perhaps heard of Jesus, from afar, from conversations, about all the things He has done. Making the lame walk, the blind see. But it has nothing to do with me. It is always the others. Do you sometimes also have the impression that when you see some people, they are flowing with life, very spiritual and wonderful. And you sometimes have the impression, as we have also heard a little of here in that testimony, what does that have to do with my life? Jesus, who passes by, who was ultimately with the people, suddenly becomes very, very attentive, in that He says, as they say, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, this man called out into the crowd. Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me. One can, to put it in modern terms, one can sometimes bring a society to the brink of ruin if there are any disruptive elements present. Perhaps Jesus, that is now my fantasy, but perhaps Jesus should have held a great speech on the marketplace there, near Jericho. About life, in faith and what all that means, and this and that, perhaps He should have done that. Perhaps the people who were going ahead, perhaps they had a great plan for what Jesus should now accomplish. Sometimes I also have the impression, I have a plan, Jesus must now give His blessing, but it is not God’s plan. Not God’s plan. Jesus does not let Himself be appropriated, but He wants to co-determine your life, He wants to shape your life, He wants to show you what is at stake, what is currently at hand in your life. Do you let Him co-plan for your life? If I am to describe my life to you, I have sometimes done a lot without Jesus, it sounded wonderful, arrived wonderfully. The people almost applauded, but it was not the right time. It was not the right time. Perhaps it is also like that for you, but those who were going ahead rebuked him, saying he should be silent. Sometimes Jesus disrupts the flow. I have the impression. Sometimes it is also like that for me, we have quite different ideas and then we think, Jesus, that does not fit right now. Sometimes one would have to say something that is right, but it does not fit right now. Then we say, no, another time, another time. When the situation arises, that is also a phrase, when the situation arises. How many situations have already arisen in your or my life and I have not followed up on these things? I cannot sing that myself. Because I had the impression, this is not the time. And perhaps these people who were going ahead had a good intention. It should have become a great thing, but it had nothing to do with Jesus. Jesus does not let
appropriated, but he wants to determine our life. And as the saying goes, those who went ahead rebuked him, telling him to be silent. Following the motto, my dear friend, you may have a great need, but it is not on our agenda. Yes, there are sometimes things that are not on our agenda. Jesus has a different agenda for my life, that is just how it is. And I am sometimes greatly surprised myself at what suddenly changes, where I did not expect it. But he wants to use these times through you and through me. Let us give him this time, let us give him this priority. Let us give him this opportunity. Those who went ahead threaten him, telling him to be silent. What he desires is not in the program. It is not in the program. But the wonderful thing is that the man does not let himself be made to be silent, but as the text says, he cried out all the more. Yes, why? Because he has nothing to lose. Because he has nothing to lose. If I ask you the question, I also ask it again personally, what do you actually have to lose if you have Jesus in your life? What do you actually have to lose? Basically? Nothing. You can only gain. This man was a disruptive factor in the flow. It was not planned. But there are things that often occur in life that are not planned, but suddenly turn out completely differently. Are we ready to hear God’s voice, to hear the voice of Jesus, and to change our plan, so that he may be glorified through you and through me? So that he may be honored? You must check this yourselves. I also check it again. It is called a retreat. Sometimes going into retreat with Jesus. Where have I gone astray? Where do I perhaps need to turn around? Where have I gotten into a dead end? This is sometimes very important so that we stay on track. Sometimes painful, but sometimes important. Jesus is there for people who have a concern of the heart. And Jesus does not let himself be appropriated by people who carry out a specific program. As the saying goes? Jesus stood still and let him be brought to him. One single man. My dear ones, when Jesus speaks to us, he always speaks personally. There are many people who always like to give mass speeches. They always like to give mass speeches. But when Jesus speaks, he always speaks very personally to you. Are you aware of that? The King, the Lord, the Lord of this world? Why does he speak with you? Because you have a personality. Because you are uniquely created. Because God had something in mind when you came into life. Because he loves you, and I personally do not. With your highs and also with your lows. With your talent, but also with your weaknesses. And that means, when Jesus speaks to us, then majesty speaks to us. The Lord of this world, as we have also sung in the songs. Sometimes I am not aware of it. I must keep making myself aware of it. I do not even believe that I am better than you. I also have my shortcomings. But I am working on it. I want to work on it. I want to optimize my relationship with Jesus. Because that has eternal value. That remains. These are the so-called holy deeds. These are the works that follow us. That has permanence, even in eternity. And that is where I want to go. I want to set priorities so that something comes out of it for Jesus. And Jesus had this priority. And he does not let himself be appropriated, but he has a very, very fine ear. And that is for those who call out to him from the heart, from the heart. Like the blind man. And then this strange question comes. He stood still and let him be brought to him. But as he came nearer, he asked him, what do you want me to do for you? Honestly. When I first read it, I said, is it a stupid question. If he is blind, then one can see that. Jesus could have done it like this. Be healed, live a happy life, get
clean. He could have done it. He could do all of that. And he was it. And everyone would have applauded. Oh, did you see that? No, I think I am accusing, please, but it might be more honest. But I believe that those who came before did not even notice that Jesus had stopped. Do you know that? They already had the goal in sight, right? Marching. And Jesus was still somewhere else, in another place. And then Jesus fell behind. That happens. Where is he all of a sudden? He stood still and let him be led to him. And he asks the question, which naturally, one does not have to ask, but why does he ask the question, what do you want me to do for you? Why does he ask this question? Because he wants to know whether we can trust him with it. Whether we can trust him with it. How often have I heard stories about Jesus, about things where I say, wow. But it has nothing to do with my life. Because we have the attitude that we are so distrustful. That we perhaps cannot wait, that we perhaps experience things that occupy us so much that it increasingly recedes into the background. What do you want me to do for you? The question is asked to find out whether this man, this blind man, trusts him that he can change his situation. Therefore the question this morning also to you. Are there things you would like to change, but you keep tinkering with them yourself and nothing moves forward, because you do not want to hand them over to Jesus. Because you think, I do not want to overload Jesus with the small stuff. I mean, this illness was no small stuff. He was dependent. Jesus asks him therefore because he wants to know whether he trusts him that he can heal him. What do you want me to do for you? Dear ones, I wish that we had more time, that we could go through, spell out, what Jesus could do. That also means first of all being honest, that we sometimes experience situations that truly not only make us afraid, but are also threatening, that we express this to him. We can do that, because he is the Lord of all situations in your and my life. He spoke to him, that I can see. And Jesus spoke to him, be healed, your faith has made you well. The faith, which was first theory from hearing, suddenly became practical. He could see. And what could he have done? He could have gone home and said, wow, great. Thank you very much, Jesus. It was nice that I got to know you. It was nice that I experienced the miracle. It was nice that I can return to my daily routine and do the things I have missed for so long. And if the story ends, he does not go home, he does not go home, but he follows Jesus. With everything he has. And there was not much, there was not much. He follows him. And Jesus recognized that. He recognized it and immediately he was healed and follows him and praised God. And all who saw it, praised God. Excuse me, I am being a bit sarcastic now. But the question I ask myself, what did they actually see? What did they actually see? They saw a man who was suddenly healed. And on we go. Next event. Jesus is not one for special situations, a God, a Jesus for special situations, but Jesus is our life-giver. Jesus wants to be the foundation of our life. He wants to shape your and my life. And that is a lot of work. That is a lot of work. I sometimes have the impression, with me it is a permanent construction site. That is nothing. He does not get tired. He works on it. And he works on it thoroughly. And this work that he does, it serves for healing, that things become healthy again. We can perhaps do everything, perceive everything. Much of it is also beautiful, it is also wished for us from the heart. But there are things that also a
to have a healing process. And Jesus wishes that you let him do so. That you let him work. That he says, here and there, something must be changed. Because it does not do your life good. If you continue like this, then you must make a decision. But things will then become good. And you will become spirit, soul, healthy. That is what he wishes. My dear ones, if I preach here this morning, I have no fear, I preach to myself. And sometimes I get completely confused with my concept. But I believe that is the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I trust him too little. I always want everything to be quick, quick, quick, quick. It all sounds good, wonderful. But no, God wants you as you are, with your weaknesses, with your construction sites, with what you can do, where he rejoices, where things develop further. That is what it is about, that his name is made great. And that is what I wish for. I am finished, Amen. Let us pray once more. Yes, Jesus, sometimes I am conspicuous. Sometimes I also have such things that I bring to the forefront and consider important, because it perhaps does my life good. And because I perhaps also want to eliminate weaknesses, that are permanent construction sites in my life. It is not about

Man möchte mal was anderes hören, was anderes sehen. Was geht in unserem Leben alles so an Dingen an uns vorbei? Was hast du eigentlich zu verlieren? Im Grunde genommen? Nichts. Ich will daran arbeiten.
