Khutbah: Unity is Mercy

no name given · Alukah – Freitagspredigten (Riad) · 2026-09-10 · Riad · Source

Community · main message Mercy · carrying Patience

The unity of Muslims is a divine mercy and a protection against error and external enemies, while division is a punishment and stems from greed, ignorance, and the work of Satan.

The community is mercy, and division is punishment.

The sermon addresses the unity of Muslims as divine mercy and protection against error, division, and external enemies. It draws on Quranic verses and hadiths that present community, cohesion, and holding fast to the rope of God as an obligation. Specific religious practices such as the congregational prayer, the Friday prayer, the festival prayer, and zakat are mentioned as means of strengthening cohesion. The Prophet is quoted with the parable of the building and the body to illustrate the mutual connectedness of the believers. In the second sermon, the current disintegration and strife within the Umma are described as the work of Satan and the consequence of greed, ignorance, and injustice. Division is presented as a cause of humiliation and decline of the community. The text calls for unity, for caution against fragmentation, and for patience, and concludes with the supplication that God may gather the Umma upon a word of agreement.

Sermon: Unity is Mercy Allah, Exalted is His Majesty, has bestowed a favor upon His servants by uniting their words. He, the Most High, said: “And remember the favor of Allah upon you when you were enemies and He joined your hearts together, and by His favor you became brothers. And when you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make His verses clear to you that you may be guided” [Al Imran: 103]. Therefore, unity, cohesion, and holding firmly to the strong rope of Allah, which is the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, are a safeguard against deviation and misguidance. It unites the Ummah upon a single word, strengthens the state and its entity to face challenges, and through it we confront the schemes and stratagems of enemies. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Indeed, Allah is pleased with you for three things and dislikes three things for you. He is pleased with you that you worship Him and do not associate anything with Him, and that you hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not separate. He dislikes for you idle talk, excessive questioning, and the squandering of wealth” [Narrated by Muslim]. O Muslims, to affirm this great principle and fundamental basis, the Wise Lawgiver has prepared the means that strengthen the structure of consensus and reinforce the bond of unity. In congregational prayer, unity is realized five times a day, through the close standing in rows, the proximity of bodies, feet, and shoulders. There is this weekly gathering on the day of Friday, and an annual gathering in the Eid prayer. Zakat represents social solidarity and the meanings of mutual mercy and compassion, along with other legitimate acts of worship that call for this great principle. The Prophet gave the example of the believers and their unity as a building and a single body. Abu Musa al-Ash’ari reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “The believer to the believer is like a building, each part strengthening the other” [Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim]. And al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “The example of the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion is like a body; when one part of it suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever” [Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim]. O Muslims, the Noble Prophet warned his Ummah against matters that breed hatred and enmity in hearts and create aversion among Muslims. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Do not envy one another, do not deceive one another, do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, and do not undercut one another in sales. Be servants of Allah, brothers. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not oppress him, does not abandon him, and does not look down upon him. Piety is here”—and the Prophet pointed to his chest three times—“it is sufficient for a person to be in evil that he looks down upon his Muslim brother. Every Muslim is forbidden to another Muslim: his blood, his wealth, and his honor” [Narrated by Muslim]. The Prophet informed that the community and consensus are mercy, while division is punishment, and that it is part of the scheme and stratagem of Satan. Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “The community is mercy, and division is punishment” [Narrated by al-Tabarani and authenticated by al-Albani]. And Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Hold fast to the community, and beware of division; for Satan is with the one, and he is farthest from the two. Whoever desires the spaciousness of Paradise—the middle and highest part of it—let him adhere to the community. He whose good deed pleases him and whose bad deed displeases him, that is the true believer” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]. It is our collective duty to be a single internal front, to be a single row, and for our word to be united. We must exercise the utmost caution against division, dispersion, and the causes leading to them. Allah, the Most High, said: “And do not dispute, lest you lose courage and your power depart. And be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” [Al-Anfal: 46]. We ask Allah, the Most High, to unite the Ummah upon a single word. Second Sermon Indeed, what causes the heart pain and increases its worry is the painful discord and deep contention witnessed in the body of the great Ummah, indeed even among the people of the same country. This is part of the work and stratagem of Satan. This abhorrent separation and blameworthy disagreement arises from following desires and personal ambitions, and striving for self-realization. From ignorance and injustice come division, discord, and blameworthy disagreement. All of this hinders the progress of the Ummah, impedes its development, dissipates its energies, and distances it from achieving its hopes and reaching its goals. The result is humiliation and regression. The Noble Quran has warned Muslims against division that shakes the ranks and leads to the disappearance and collapse of nations. Allah, the Most High, said: “And do not dispute, lest you lose courage and your power depart” [Al-Anfal: 46]. Ibn Mas’ud reported: “I heard a man recite a verse, and I heard the Prophet recite it differently. So I brought him to the Prophet and informed him. I recognized displeasure on his face, and he said: ‘Both of you have done well, but do not differ; for those before you differed and thus perished’” [Narrated by al-Bukhari]. Allah, the Most High, said: “Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects—you are not responsible for them in any way. Their affair is only to Allah” [Al-An’am: 159]. Therefore, whoever seeks to divide and scatter, and makes the community of Muslims into competing factions, the Prophet is innocent of him.
