The awareness of being observed by God in every moment is the foundation for ethical conduct and the careful fulfillment of all tasks in everyday life.

Ihsan means that you serve Allah as if you see Him. And even if you do not see Allah, He sees you.

The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB that explains the Islamic concept of ihsan (excellence in worship). It is based on the hadith in which the angel Jibril asks the Prophet Muhammad about the foundations of Islam, Iman, and ihsan. The central definition is to serve Allah as if one sees Him, even if one does not see Him. The text emphasizes that this awareness of God's omnipresence and omniscience leads to ethical behavior, even when no human witnesses are present. It calls for every task to be fulfilled with the utmost care, honesty, and devotion in order to attain God's pleasure. The sermon is addressed to the believers present and calls on them to anchor this awareness in their daily lives and in their work.

﷽ . Indeed, Allah loves those who do good (…): And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (…) For if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you. Ihsan: To live as if one sees Allah (08.08.2025) Omar (ra) reports: “One day we were with the Messenger of Allah (s) when suddenly a man appeared, sat next to our Prophet (s) and said: ‘O Muhammad, explain to me Islam!’ The Messenger of Allah (s) explained Islam to him with the following words: ‘Islam means that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; that you perform the ritual prayer sincerely, pay the Zakat (social tax), fast in Ramadan and – if you are able to – perform the pilgrimage Hajj.’” Thereupon the man said: “You have spoken the truth!” Then he asked: “O Muhammad, explain to me Iman (faith).” The Messenger of Allah (s) answered: ‘Iman means that you believe in Allah, in His angels, His books, His prophets, in the Last Day and that destiny, good and bad, is from Allah.’” Again the man said: “You have spoken the truth!” and then said: “Explain to me Ihsan.” The Messenger of Allah (s) explained Ihsan with the following words: “Ihsan means that you serve Allah as if you see Him. And even if you do not see Allah, He sees you.” (…) After the man had left, our Prophet stated that it was actually the Angel Jibril who had come to teach people their religion.[1] Dear brothers and sisters! Dear believers! One of the fundamental concepts in Islam is Ihsan. Ihsan means to lead life in a consciousness, as if one were seeing Allah Himself. For a believer with this consciousness, it is not important whether people observe him or cameras record him. The only decisive factor is that Allah sees him, knows everything, and is fully aware of everything. A believer with this consciousness will not commit a sin even if no one is near him. He will not cheat, not lie, not commit betrayal, and not violate the rights of others. Ihsan also means to fulfill every task and deed as well as possible and with the utmost care. It does not merely mean to complete a task, but to do it with dedication and love for detail, and to strive for a good result. For Allah, our exalted Creator, expects us to perform our work well and beautifully.[2] Dear brothers and sisters! Let us not forget that Allah is with us everywhere and sees all our actions – regardless of where we are. If we want to attain the pleasure of our Lord, then we should fulfill every task with care, honesty, and in the best possible way. May Allah make us among those who serve Him as if they see Him. ﷽ .
