The Christian community is called to serve as sentinels through fraternal correction and shared prayer, in order to lead the neighbour on the path of love and eternal life.

If your brother sins, go and rebuke him alone … If he does not listen to you, let one or two persons accompany you.

The text interprets the biblical figure of the watchman as a mandate to accompany and teach the neighbour. It links quotations from Ezekiel, Paul, and Matthew to ground the duty of mutual love and fraternal correction. Jesus is presented as the way that leads out of evil, with shared prayer depicted as indispensable. The sermon addresses families and communities, who are to promote the 'civilisation of love' through prayer and solidarity. Mary of Guadalupe is invoked as an intercessor to help with the difficult task of correcting misleading neighbours. A reference is made to the sanctuary in Extremadura, Spain, to emphasise the brotherhood between Mexico and Spain. The text concludes with a call to attain eternal life through prayer and following Jesus.

“I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel.” In the first reading, the prophet Ezekiel has reminded us that we must be a help to our neighbors: “Thus says the Lord: I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel.” And it is Jesus who is the way. How are we to help the other to get out of evil? By showing them Jesus and his teachings. That is why we responded in the psalm: “Let us listen to the Lord who tells us: do not harden your hearts.” That is to say, we must be merciful and help the needy neighbor. Saint Paul, in the second reading, exhorts us in the same line: “Brothers, do not owe anyone anything except the debt of mutual love. For the one who loves his neighbor has already fulfilled the whole law.” “Indeed, the commandments… are summed up in this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” And in the responsorial song to the reading of the gospel, there we reiterated our mission: “God… has entrusted to us the message of reconciliation.” Finally, in the gospel, Jesus points out that the good watchman must make known what he observes, availing himself of one or more persons for fraternal correction. Thus he affirms: “Jesus said to his disciples: If your brother sins, go and reprove him in private… If he does not listen to you, take with you one or two others.” And Jesus concludes today by assuring us of divine help: “Amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it will be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I, in the midst of them.” Where two or three are gathered in my name, how many are we here? Two or three? Many more. Common prayer is therefore indispensable and necessary. Therefore, father, mother, when you pray in your home together with your sons, daughters, or with the whole family, Jesus is present. Jesus is going to help, to assist in whatever is requested. I invite you to ask our mother today to help us in our responsibility of being watchmen of our brothers. Let us ask her, opening our hearts to her, because there are times when we do not find the moment or the way to correct the erring neighbor, to make him see that he is on a path that leads to evil. But with the help of the Lord, without a doubt, we will receive the appropriate assistance. In a brief moment of silence, each one opens his heart to ask, according to his circumstances, for the help to be a good watchman of his brothers. Our Mother, Mary of Guadalupe, remembering that you came to make known the true “God by whom we live”; we ask you to help us to be good and faithful disciples of your son Jesus, guiding our life according to his teachings and thus arriving at the house of God the Father and enjoying eternal life. Dear Mother, help us to be good watchmen to accompany our neighbors, especially those who have acted wrongly, and to guide them to return to the good path of healthy relationships with others. On this Sunday we remember the brotherhood with the Sanctuary, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Extremadura, within the Archdiocese of Toledo, Spain. Therefore we ask you, Mother, to encourage us to foster common prayer among our peoples of Mexico and Spain, and solidarity in all areas of daily life, consolidating good and lasting foundations, that will generate the civilization of love, and that will cause to spring forth in the hearts of the men and women of our time, that river of living water, that leaps up to heaven to give to God a worship in Spirit and in Truth. We commend ourselves to you who shine in our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. O clement, O merciful, O sweet Virgin Mary of Guadalupe! Amen.
