At midday on Tuesday, 26th August/8th September 2026, His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, accompanied by the Elder Chief Secretary, His Eminence Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina, the Elder Sacristan, His Eminence Archbishop Isidoros of Hierapolis, and Hierodeacon Prodromos, participated in a briefing meeting concerning the progress of the conservation works at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which are approaching completion.
The meeting was held at the Custody of the Holy Land, in the presence of the Custos of the Holy Land, Fr Francesco Ielpo, Fr Dobromir, supervisor of the works, and other Fathers of the Franciscan Brotherhood, as well as Bishop Gurion, representative of the Armenian Patriarchate.
The briefing was given by the expert scientists of Sapienza University, who presented in detail the progress made to date, the results achieved, and the final stages of the works.
His Beatitude thanked the representatives of Sapienza University for their comprehensive briefing and for the scientific and meticulous manner in which the works have been carried out. On this occasion, the Rector of Sapienza University, Professor Antonella Polimeni, presented His Beatitude with the volume published on these works, entitled “Holy City.”
His Beatitude emphasised the importance of these works for the structural reinforcement, conservation, and preservation of the Most Holy Church of the Resurrection, as a unique monument of the Christian faith and a place of pilgrimage of universal significance.
In particular, His Beatitude underscored the message of peace, reconciliation, harmony, and love which is conveyed to the whole world from the place of the Cross and the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
