Daily prayer within the framework of a cross-border alliance is an effective and hopeful response to turbulent times and serves the renewal of the Church as well as peace.
This day should not be an occasion. It should be a beginning. And to conclude: It was not we who brought Mary to this lake. She has invited us all here.
The text reports on the International Fatima Ship Procession for Peace, which took place on Lake Constance on 15 August 2026. 830 pilgrims from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland took part in the voyage of the MS Sonnenkönigin, which was led by Bishop Joseph Maria Bonnemain. The centrepiece was the celebration of a pontifical Mass and the opening of a Rosary Alliance, which calls for daily prayer practice for peace and the protection of life. The text emphasises the cross-border community and the spiritual significance of the event, which is understood as a new beginning after a six-year pause. Theological input was provided by Prof. Dr. Ralph Weimann, who described prayer as an 'investment in eternity'. The event is interpreted as a response to turbulent times, in which Mary functions as a refuge and guiding star. The text concludes with positive feedback from participants and information about the organising foundation AVEMARIA.

830 Pilgrims from three countries pray for peace on Lake Constance
On the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, Saturday, August 15, 2026, the International Fatima Ship Procession for Peace took place on Lake Constance. 830 people from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland were aboard the MS Sonnenkönigin, which departed from the port of Bregenz at 5:00 p.m. The principal celebrant of the solemn Pontifical Mass was Bishop Joseph Maria Bonnemain, Bishop of Chur. After a six-year pause, the ecclesiastical foundation AVEMARIA has resumed the pilgrimage by water. The event had been sold out for a long time in advance—significantly more people wanted a ticket than the ship could accommodate.
From an excursion ship to a cathedral
For one afternoon and evening, the MS Sonnenkönigin became a floating cathedral: a Pontifical Mass with organ, choir, and incense, celebrated on the main deck, surrounded by the lake and the shores of three countries.
Concelebrating with Bishop Bonnemain were Vicar General Dr. Hubert Lenz from Feldkirch for the Diocese of Feldkirch and Rector Georg Alois Oblinger from the Sanctuary of Marienfried for Germany—thus all three bordering countries were also represented ecclesiastically. More than ten other priests concelebrated, along with brothers and sisters of religious orders.
The mix of participants was striking: On board were not only long-time pilgrims, but also numerous families with children—for the youngest, a dedicated children's daycare was set up. Four buses brought groups from Germany and Switzerland to Bregenz. As guests of honor, representatives of partner organizations accompanied the journey, including those from Missio Austria, KIRCHE IN NOT, and FE-Medien. Among the 830 passengers were 70 volunteer helpers who were on duty from boarding through liturgy, technology, and catering to disembarkation.
The blessing over three countries—just before the storm
The highlight of the journey was the Eucharistic adoration. After the prayer of consecration and blessing over the three countries, the Bishop carried the Most Holy Sacrament in a procession to the sun deck and from there—in silence, without words, with only the monstrance—gave the triple blessing over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The image was transmitted live to the screen on the main deck.
The weather unexpectedly turned. The Bishop was just able to complete the blessing; immediately afterward, the sun deck had to be closed due to a storm warning and increasing wind. The MS Sonnenkönigin withstood the gusts without problems. Inside the ship, the pilgrims subsequently renewed the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Rosary Alliance: 150 sign-ups—and more demand than space
The center of the day was the opening of the Rosary Alliance: a prayer alliance of people from three countries who voluntarily commit to praying the Rosary daily—for peace in small and large matters, for the purity of hearts and the protection of life, and for the renewal of the Church.
The alliance book had been placed on February 13, 2026—at the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Rosary Confraternity by Saint Bartolo Longo—at the foot of his tomb in Pompeii. On board, 150 people signed in their own hand. The demand at the stand was so great that many could no longer sign up; registration is still possible at rosenkranz-buendnis.net. Each member receives an alliance rosary made of olive wood from Bethlehem, which was touched to the relic of Saint Bartolo Longo; on the 13th of each month, the Fatima Day, a Holy Mass is celebrated for all members. The relic was displayed in the altar area during the journey.
The spiritual background was explored by the Roman theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Ralph Weimann in a lecture on board. He referred to the dream vision of Saint John Bosco from 1862, in which the ship of the Church finds shelter in the storm only where it moors to two pillars: the Eucharist and Mary, Help of Christians. Weimann called the Rosary Alliance “in a certain way comparable to an investment in eternity.”
The conclusion was shaped by the sibling ensemble Harpa Dei: With songs from the languages and traditions of the entire universal Church, it visibly touched the listeners.
Voices
In his homily, Bishop Bonnemain pointed out that Christ has preserved the signs of his suffering even in his glorified body—and that one may assume something similar of Mary, who suffered so deeply with him.
Late in the evening, after the end of the voyage, the Bishop said that the procession had not only pleased him—he had been personally moved by it.
Benjamin Aepli, Managing Director of AVEMARIA, said in his opening address: “This day should not be an occasion. It should be a beginning.” And at the end: “We did not bring Mary to this lake. She has invited us all here.” As the measure of the day’s success, he did not name the voyage itself, but the question of whether the participants will still pray the Rosary daily in one year.
In the days following the voyage, AVEMARIA received numerous feedback from participants: The blessing of that evening had been palpable for the entire pilgrimage; many went home richly fulfilled.
On the International Fatima Ship Procession for Peace
The International Fatima Ship Procession for Peace is a pilgrimage on the water on Lake Constance. It began in 1981: In the midst of the Cold War, the Bludenz cabinetmaker Ferdinand Andreatta took a statue of Fatima out onto the lake—without office and without committee, in the conviction that prayer in such a time is not powerlessness, but the most effective thing a person can do. His son Thomas Andreatta has transferred the responsibility to the ecclesiastical foundation AVEMARIA, which resumed the procession in 2026 after a six-year pause. Thomas Andreatta was on board on Saturday, as were Elfie and Harald Madlener, who have organized the voyage for many years and accompanied this year’s preparation with their experience.
