The protection of mind, will, and soul requires the strict avoidance of intoxicants and gambling, as these violate divine commandments and endanger eternal salvation.
Islam forbids any harmful substance that clouds the mind, weakens the will, or damages mental health.
The text appeals to the faithful to protect their mind, will, and soul by avoiding harmful substances and behaviors. Quranic verses and hadiths serve as the basis, describing alcohol, gambling, and drugs as works of Satan and harmful to health. It is emphasized that these prohibitions apply regardless of the amount consumed or the occasion. The text warns of the physical and psychological consequences such as organ damage, nervous system damage, and gambling addiction, which are facilitated by modern technologies such as mobile phones. Young believers in particular are urged to stay away from negative influences and instead engage in sports, education, and social involvement. The sermon concludes with a call to repentance and forgiveness, as the door of mercy remains open as long as one lives. It warns against risking eternal life in the hereafter for fleeting earthly pleasures.

“Let us protect our mind, will, and soul”
(04.10.2024)
Does the Creator not know exactly what harms His servants? Does He not know the weaknesses of man? Certainly, His omniscience encompasses this as well.[1] Therefore, He establishes rules and sets boundaries. Thus, He says in the Quran: “O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous stones, and divining arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. So avoid them, that you may prosper. Indeed, Satan only intends to cause enmity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not then desist?”[2]
Beloved brothers and sisters! Honored believers!
Islam forbids any harmful substance that clouds the mind, weakens the will, or damages mental health. One of these prohibitions concerns intoxicating beverages, known today as alcohol. Thus, any beverage that disables the mind is forbidden, regardless of what it is called.[3] It makes no difference whether this beverage is consumed in small or large quantities.[4] Neither sad nor happy moments in life serve as an occasion to permit the consumption of these beverages. They remain forbidden. They are silent killers that gradually kill humans; they destroy organs and the nervous system. They lead to traffic accidents and unrest within the family.
Similarly, it is with drugs that harm physical and mental health. Even if the consumption of cannabis, for example, may be legally permitted, it remains haram according to Islamic understanding.
Brothers and sisters!
Another prohibition of Allah concerns, as mentioned in the verse, gambling. Any game in which the winnings are left to chance is considered gambling and is forbidden. The same applies to so-called “bets” or games in which the loser pays. Whether it is about a cup of tea or a soup; it remains gambling. What is concerning is that gambling is very, very widespread today. It is accessible via mobile phone and PC. Therefore, a visit to the casino is no longer required at all. The resulting gambling addiction is a serious threat to health and must not be ignored under any circumstances; it must definitely be treated.
I particularly want to appeal earnestly to my young brothers and sisters: If friends lead you in the wrong direction, keep away from them. Never think “Once is no time” – for that can be the beginning of your decline. Do not ruin yourselves and do not destroy your future. Do not hesitate to seek professional help if you are threatened by addictions. Use your free time meaningfully: engage in sports, read books, get involved in social projects, and participate in the youth activities of the mosques. Do not forget: the greatest loss is to lose the love of the Exalted Allah. Do not be deceived by the fleeting pleasures of this life and do not risk the eternal life in the Hereafter.
Honored believers!
As long as we live, the door of repentance remains open to us. Let us not lose time and sincerely repent for our sins here and now. Let us ask Allah for forgiveness and make a firm resolve not to repeat our mistakes. Let us leave the mosque purified and relieved and return to our homes as new people. Never forget the words of our exalted Lord: “O you who have wronged yourselves! Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the All-Forgiving, the Merciful.”[5]
