Human beings should prepare themselves for the Day of Reckoning, on which their attitude in this world determines their fate, through humility, reflection on creation, and obedience to God's commandments.

Never forget: you were created from a tiny drop – be humble! Just as you know where you come from, also think about where you are going.

The text is a sermon by the DITIB Sermon Commission that develops the central messages of Sura Abasa (Quran 80). It begins with the framing of the Quran as a divine guide that orients human beings in this world and the next. It then paraphrases six sections of the sura: the call to reverence for the word of God, to humility in light of one's own origin and of death, to reflection on creation, to a warning about the Day of Judgment, and to the distinction between radiant and dark faces on that day. The text closes with a supplication of the Prophet for the unity of hearts and for salvation. No concrete reference to the present is made; the message is directed generally at the believers. The sermon is classified in the DITIB archive as a Friday sermon and bears the date 05.12.2025.

Messages from the Sura Abasa (05.12.2025) The Quran was revealed to guide humanity. It is a divine guide that gives direction to our lives. With its commandments, prohibitions, and recommendations, it leads man to the right path in this world as well as in the Hereafter. Therefore, it is our duty to carry the exalted messages of the Quran into every area of our lives. One of the remarkable and thought-provoking examples of this is the Sura Abasa. This Sura summarizes the human life journey from birth to death, from this world to the Hereafter, in a profound manner. Our exalted Lord reminds us in the Sura Abasa of the following universal principles: O people! Value those who seek the truth and strive for spiritual purification. As believers, give people the best advice, fulfill the duties that are incumbent upon you with regard to religious instruction, and leave the responsibility for the purification of others to their own hearts. You should always give priority not to those who ignore the truth despite your explanations, but to those who carry God-fearingness in their hearts.1 Be respectful and reverent toward the Word of Allah. Draw lessons from it, make it your model, take it as a warning. Follow its advice and avoid what is forbidden.2 Do not be ungrateful! Value the opportunities you have, do not conceal the truth, and do not overestimate yourselves. Never forget: You were created from a tiny drop – be humble! Just as you know where you come from, also think about where you are going. Do not forget death, the day on which you will enter the earth. And do not forget that on the Day of Resurrection you will rise again and give an account. Prepare for it by following the commandments and prohibitions of Allah.3 Reflect on everything: Every bite you eat, every sip of water you drink. Reflect on the rain that falls from the sky, how the earth brings forth fruits and blessings. Reflect on the gifts and opportunities that your Lord bestows upon all living beings.4 O man! On the Day of Judgment, when the tremendous sound resounds and deafens the ears, the advice and warning that you have heard in this world will no longer be of any benefit. Do not underestimate this day! It will be so harsh and overwhelming that man will flee from his brother, from his mother and his father, from his wife and his child. For on that day, everyone will be preoccupied only with himself.5 Some faces will shine brightly on that day, full of joy and happiness. Other faces, however, will be dark – those who denied the truth and devoted themselves to sin.6 May Allah make us among the servants whose faces shine on that day. May He forgive our sins and turn our worldly life and Hereafter to good. I would like to conclude my words with a supplication of our Prophet (s.a.s.): "O Allah! Unite our hearts. Improve our relationships among one another and guide us to the paths of salvation. Lead us from the darknesses into the light and keep us away from the great sins, whether they are manifest or hidden."7 The DITIB Preaching Commission Sources: 1 Abasa, 80/1-10. 2 Abasa, 80/11-16. 3 Abasa, 80/17-23. 4 Abasa, 80/24-32. 5 Abasa, 80/33-37. 6 Abasa, 80/38-42. 7 Ebû Dâvûd, Salat, 182. 2025-12-05 All rights reserved.
