Personal faith provides stability and deceleration in the daily life of politics, with an open approach to doubts and interdenominational community in parliament serving as supporting elements.

I do believe that there is someone who holds us up and keeps us there and who is present and who never abandons us

The text is an interview with Member of the German Bundestag Bernd Rützel, who describes his personal connection to the Catholic faith. He describes how faith gives him stability and conveys to him the feeling of never being alone. Rützel reports on his long marriage, which he contracted in the parish council, and emphasises the importance of rituals such as worship for deceleration. He describes his active participation in an interdenominational prayer group in the Bundestag, which serves as a space free from politics. The politician acknowledges that doubts are part of faith and that the Church also has problems that must be addressed openly. He sees in the open engagement with these topics a way to keep the faith alive and to continue developing it.

I do believe that there is someone who hangs on to us and holds us, who is there and who never leaves us, and that life is easier when you know you do not have to fulfill everything exactly and that you cannot fall deeper than into God’s hands. Says Bernd Rüssel. The 57-year-old has been in the Bundestag since 2013. The Catholic Church has been part of his life since his childhood. First Communion classes, serving as an altar server, later as a lector. But a real stroke of luck was the parish council. Because that is where I met my wife, and we have been together for 33 years, and that is a wonderful story. Bernd Rüssel is strengthened in his faith. He also does this publicly, for example on his social media accounts. What some people might think about it is of no concern to him. For me, it is simply important that I find support there. Attending Sunday or Saturday worship is simply part of it. I do not always manage it, but I always try. And that is also important. You do not always get good thoughts. But that is normal. But sometimes you get good inspiration. I also like to sing. I do not claim that I can sing well, but I like to sing. And that is simply beautiful for me, above all, to come to rest for an hour. To have a firm ritual as well. To slow down a bit and to come out of it strengthened again into this day or this week. The politician practices his faith not only at home, but also in Berlin. When he came to the Bundestag in 2013, he received countless invitations. One was that there is a prayer circle there. They meet there on Friday mornings. I was inspired by that, went there once. And I have gone there ever since. I believe I have missed it no more than five times in these 13 years. And at some point, they also elected or appointed me as moderator, that is what it is called. And with two others, we lead this prayer circle in the German Bundestag. In the prayer circle, politicians from different parties and denominations meet each other. For Bernd Rützel, it is something special. It is a circle, in the midst of politics, that is free of politics. And you say things to each other that you would never otherwise do. You would immediately be in the newspaper the next day. But that is why the thing is also so successful. It has been around for over 40 years. And it exists in many, many parliaments in the world. The mother of all prayer breakfast circles was in Washington. And nevertheless, doubts are part of it for Bernd Rützel. I cannot imagine that there is any human being who does not also doubt sometimes. And of course, one also doubts. I believe that belongs to it. It is perhaps quite good that one questions oneself and thinks and considers. It is often complicated and complex. And it is not just sunshine. The Church also has its problems. And they are there. But they become bigger if one tries to sweep these problems under the carpet somewhere. Then they become even bigger and then one stumbles over the hill in the carpet. So from that perspective, let in fresh air and think and look, am I right. And then it continues. And thank God, it has always continued until today, also for me.

Was manche darüber denken könnten, sei ihm egal.
