God is a loving, forgiving partner who grants humans freedom and catches them when they fall, rather than controlling them or being held responsible for the evil in the world.

That is loving for me, freedom-giving, forgiving of mistakes. I always have the possibility, even if I have done something stupid, that he still loves me.

The text portrays Jannik Feidel, co-coach of the Würzburger Kickers, and his personal path of faith. He describes his image of God as loving, freedom-giving, and forgiving, which he compares to a football goal with a large-mesh net. This comparison symbolizes that God catches him without controlling him or leading him like a marionette. Feidel reports that he deepened his faith in his youth through the study of sports and theology as well as through personal crises in boarding school. For him, prayer is a means of inner clarification and composure, which helps him see life as a series of offerings. He emphasizes that human freedom and fallibility mean that bad things can happen, which he does not attribute to God but assigns to personal responsibility. The core message is that faith offers a secure 'home base' that enables the individual to develop freely while being caught when they fall.

It is cuboid in shape, covered with a white net of large meshes. The goal, which stands on the moss-green football field that Janik Feidel is looking at. He is sitting on the stand, which looks like an oversized staircase, riddled with countless small holes punched out of the mat metal. For me, the characteristics I attribute to it are important. For me, it is loving, granting freedom, forgiving mistakes. I always have the possibility, even if I have done something foolish, he still loves me. In these three words, I would always describe my image of God. It is the freedom that has become part of his faith in recent years, that has become important to him, that shapes his faith today. We humans, who have simply received this freedom from God to shape our own lives, I believe, life makes us offers. And if one is open and if one, I believe, is at peace with oneself and content, then life constantly makes such offers and one has to seize them. He radiates, small laugh lines carve themselves into his cheeks. The image he has of God, it has changed. In his early twenties and later, when he studies sports and theology. He thinks intensively about faith, religion. Away from the image that everything is predetermined and we, like puppets hanging on strings, and God leads us through life, he certainly also had an idea with us, but it is not that he pulls us somewhere. Eggshell-colored, plush is his fleece jacket. Black the trousers, white the sneakers. Faith, it is important in his family. His great-aunt is a church warden, takes him to church on Sundays. He becomes a communion child, an altar server, goes to boarding school in Jena at the age of 12. A big step for him. Then one notices, away from the family, that one is somehow also alone. And especially the things that did not go as planned and then one lies alone in bed in the evening, then even a 12-year-old questions. Where is the meaning actually right now or who is there now and gives me a bit of support? Janik Feidel has pulled his legs up, bent. His knees leaning against each other like an inverted V. He remembers that he tried back then to speak with God, in prayer. To tell me again and again, hey, you are not alone, no matter what you do, there is someone who has an idea, who has a plan and who also catches you in a certain way and that gave me extremely much strength. Even today he still likes to pray in the morning after getting up. It sorts him out, clarifies his thoughts, does something with him, his awareness for the day, makes him more relaxed, is for him a path to satisfaction. Then I will probably rather recognize situations where I say, yes, that is it. And therefore I actually wished, that is good. Janik Feidel blinks into the sun, appears inwardly calm, settled in himself, thinks about his relationship with God, how close he is to him, how connected he feels to him. If I take the time and if I align my thoughts there, then I always have the feeling that God is right close to me. But of course there are also phases in my life now where I have moved further away from God and then that was not due to God, but due to me. Even if sometimes things happen that Janik Feidel cannot understand. That raise questions about the why, the meaning. That I now had a phase where I said, hey, wow, no, why does it happen like that? And then also blame God for the event, somehow not. He shakes his head with his chestnut-brown hair, which is shaved very short on the sides. On top, tousled and styled. Bad things will happen, if we humans are free, because we humans are fallible. And God gives us the possibility. And I cannot say, It does not give us the possibility, because then I would somehow restrict my freedom. It is the great, memorable moments in life in which he feels God. Moments of success, moments of grief. And these are the small, quiet moments. On this interpersonal level, in a conversation, in a phone call, or also in a certain group dynamic, but also when one is out in nature and thinks, wow, is this just beautiful right now. When he brews coffee, his eyes shine, sparkle. While he tells about how these moments feel, the moments in which he feels God. If I have the feeling that something divine is happening, I would simply say that. And when one has this moment, then one has a small moment of complete satisfaction. He rests his elbow on his knee, has formed his hand into a small ball, leans his head against it, thinks. About the great question, the question about the meaning in life. The foundation and the deeper meaning, I simply see in the faith that somehow everything is, as it is, fundamentally good. And that I then, of course, as a human being can develop myself and also express myself, but just have a safe home base, so that I cannot fall quite so deep, but rather there will be something that then catches me and that then also holds me. Like the white net with the large meshes, hanging in the goal. That catches, holds.
