The month of Sha'ban serves as a prophetically foreseen phase of inner purification and spiritual preparation, in which believers, through heightened devotion and self-examination, prepare their deeds for the Hereafter.

Let us today follow in the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah by performing our acts of faith with Ihlas and kindling in our hearts the anticipation of the approaching Ramadan.

The text announces the beginning of Ramadan and honors the month of Sha'ban as a spiritual preparatory phase. It refers to the practice of the Prophet Muhammad of performing additional voluntary prayers in Sha'ban in order to attune himself to fasting. Believers are called upon to purify their hearts through the reading and meditation of the Quran as well as through heightened prayer practice. A central element is self-examination with regard to the Hereafter, since the deeds of believers are presented to God in this month. The text emphasizes the importance of inner sincerity (Ihlas) and spiritual preparation for the sacred season. It concludes with an exhortation to God-fearingness and mindfulness of one's own actions.

We Are Approaching Ramadan (23.01.2026) The month of Rajab, which was the gateway to the three blessed months, has ended. Today, we are already on the fourth day of the month of Sha'ban, which means that Ramadan, the month of mercy, will commence in less than a month. May Allah enable us all to fully realize the blessings and grace of this sacred time and to experience Ramadan in good health. Brothers and Sisters! Dear Believers! The month of Sha'ban held a very special place in the heart of our beloved Prophet (s). He regarded this month as the preparation for Ramadan. During this blessed time, he performed more voluntary acts of worship than usual and showed us how we should enter the vast spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan.1 Let us today follow in the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah by performing our acts of worship with Ikhlas (sincerity) and kindling the anticipation for the approaching Ramadan in our hearts. Let us not enter Ramadan, the month of the Quran, without the Quran. Let us adorn our tongues with the Quran, heal our hearts with the Quran, and let us be guided by the Quran. Learning knows no age! If we have not yet mastered reading the Quran, let us immediately begin to learn to read the Holy Book of Allah. If we can already read the Quran, let us recite the Quran every day—even if it is only a few pages—to prepare our souls for Ramadan. Let us reflect on the meaning of the verses and strive to let the call of Allah flow into our lives. Let us perform the prescribed rituals and simultaneously increase our voluntary prayers. Let us spend more time in prostration and offer more supplications. Let us prepare ourselves internally, spiritually, morally, and physically for Ramadan. Dear Believers! All these preparations are, in essence, a prophetic legacy that has been passed down through the centuries. Our Prophet (s) explained the month of Sha'ban and the significance of fasting in this month with the following words: “The month of Sha'ban is the month between Rajab and Ramadan, about which people are often inattentive. Yet in this month, the deeds are presented to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. And I wish that my deeds be presented to Allah while I am fasting.”2 Honored Believers! The teaching of our Prophet (s) that our deeds are presented to Allah admonishes us to prepare for Ramadan and reminds us to invest in our eternal life in a timely manner. This preparation concerns not just one month; it encompasses all the effort we put into beautifying our Hereafter. I would like to conclude my sermon with the admonition of our Creator, which invites deep self-examination: “O you who believe! Fear Allah. Let every soul consider what it has sent forth for the Hereafter. Be mindful of Allah; He knows exactly what you do.”3 The DİTİB Sermon Commission Sources: 1 Muslim, Siyam, 176. 2 Nasa'i, Siyam, 70. 3 Quran, al-Hashr, 59/18. 2026-01-23 All rights reserved. Seid achtsam gegenüber Allah; Er weiß genau, was ihr tut.“3 Die DİTİB-Predigtkommission Quellen: 1 Muslim, Siyam, 176. 2 Nesa‘i, Siyam, 70. 3 Koran, al-Haschr, 59/18. 2026-01-23 Alle Rechte vorbehalten.
