Active, positive, and collective action at the local level is the most effective way to overcome political crises, realize climate protection, and strengthen democratic resilience.
Getting into action instead of being in a state of shock. Despite or precisely because of the many crises, the unhinged autocrats, tech billionaires, and enemies of democracy.
The newsletter of the parents' initiative Parents for Future (P4F) calls for active engagement in climate protection and democracy despite political crises and autocratic tendencies. It presents concrete action ideas, including participation in the unsealing competition 'abpflastern', the organization of future festivals, and the use of digital tools such as the app 'Fit4Klima'. A focus is placed on the strategy of communicating climate protection as climate adaptation in order to gain broader societal support without being perceived as confrontational. Quotes from experts such as Heinrich Strößenreuther and Harald Lesch emphasize the importance of self-efficacy, citizen participation, and the avoidance of feelings of helplessness. The text connects local initiatives with global challenges and positions getting involved as a way to strengthen political pressure and social cohesion. It is emphasized that individual actions, such as enlarging one's 'ecological footprint', contribute to the transformation toward a climate-just city.

NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 1 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 Dear readers, today we have a colorful potpourri centered around GETTING INVOLVED. “Getting into action” instead of shock paralysis. Despite or precisely because of the many crises, the unhinged autocrats, tech billionaires, and enemies of democracy.
For GETTING INVOLVED, we provide you with dates and a wealth of ideas (further actions on the P4F website).
Put pressure on local politics. Support petitions such as the one for the trees in Wolfratshausen. Organize a Future Festival like the one in Mainz. Participate in “unpaving” or in the organization of a nationwide photo competition “Lost places… of the future”. Treat yourselves to our “Good News”. Implement the presented ideas for successful climate activism (Part 1 was in Newsletter #50). A lot is also possible online – e.g.
with the “Fit4Klima” app or the game “ICT.factory”.
Motivate friends & family, neighbors, and colleagues, not only to shrink their CO 2 footprint, but even better, to enlarge their ecological handprint.
Should some motivation still be missing: In the Spiegel reply “YES. The climate movement still exists!” by a P4F activist from Bonn, there is anger, but also a lot of energy.

A festival for everyone: for exchange, for networking, for feeling how our city can be designed to be livable and lovable, and with suggestions on what we all as citizens can contribute to this.
EXPERIENCING WISHES, VISIONS, UTOPIAS “CITY FEELINGS – THE FUTURE FESTIVAL” Making central future questions regarding climate protection, social cohesion, and democratic participation tangible and encouraging – this is the goal of “City Feelings – the Future Festival”, which took place for the third time in Mainz from August 14 to 16. The Future Festival was themed this year under “Democracy, Sustainability, and Climate”. Both entertaining and informative positive future images were conveyed, as well as critical discussions were held. “City Feelings” aims to show: The necessary transformation towards a climate-just and solidary city can bring joy and connect people.

Renewable energies, heat pumps, circular economy, self-help • Co-shaping society: democracy and civic participation, voluntary engagement, networking, exchange • More non-commercial spaces: consumption-free meeting spaces, sports and playgrounds, neighborhood stages • Future-proof mobility: cities for people, not for motor vehicles • Education for the future: for everyone, strengthen in the curriculum, democracy education • Celebrating life in the city: street and neighborhood festivals, youth and neighborhood meeting points
In late May 2024, a Future Festival took place for the first time in the city center of Mainz, initiated by Scientists for Future (S4F) Mainz-Wiesbaden, supported by organizers from the climate and environmental movement as well as by the University of Applied Sciences Mainz. In the meantime, the newly founded association “Mainz nachhaltig verbinden e. V.” is the organizer of the Future Festival. Many, especially young people, are involved in the preparation and implementation of the “Stadtgefühle” for their city and for their own future. They feel that they can co-shape their future.

Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 4 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter # 5 1•09/2026 Heinrich Strößenreuther: Climate activism, but done right!
With his campaign “BaumEntscheid Berlin,” Heinrich Strößenreuther achieved that Berlin received a “BäumePlus Act” in 2025. How was this success possible? How can the often silent majority of the population be won over for more climate protection and for climate campaigns?
A topic must be chosen that emotionally appeals, affects a large part of the population, and whose solution promises a concrete improvement of one’s own situation. “More trees” and “fewer heat-related deaths” are such topics that also appeal to conservatives.
An important component of a successful campaign is also communication: the optics (rather conservative logo) and the choice of words (less confrontational). Strößenreuther sees the choice of a topic on climate adaptation – instead of climate protection – as a “Trojan horse.”
In the BaumEntscheid, climate is inevitably also discussed. What sticks – regardless of whether it is climate adaptation or CO2 reduction: We must do more for the climate.
“The communication was carefully coordinated: no ‘red-green folklore’.”
Strößenreuther, however, views blocking actions critically: They are counterproductive, leading to a partisan politicization of climate protection. “Climate fanatics” became a term of battle of the right. Actions that are based on rule violations rather reflect the attitude of a minority. The Fridays had succeeded years ago in demanding climate protection from politics in a credible manner in the sense of the majority society.
Harald Lesch: Feelings of powerlessness? – On climate, I can do something!
Harald Lesch sees in many political actors an obvious loss of reality, “but that should not prevent us from doing the right thing, acting solidarily, subsidiarily, and oriented towards the common good.” The most important points of approach for him are citizen participation – e.g., in the form of energy cooperatives – and activities to improve the acceptance of climate protection measures. We are not powerless in the face of the challenges, according to Lesch: “Unlike, for example, the war against Ukraine, I can do something about climate.” His guiding principle: “What is probable and what is possible? The possibilities, that is what really interests me.” Activities for climate protection are not detached from questions of justice for Lesch. Findings from game theory show: “Only if everyone at the table wins again and again does the game continue.”
If fewer and fewer people win at the table, the game ends relatively quickly.” The game is our democratic society in Europe.
If it comes to an end, a new game begins … “that is not what we want”.
1.5-DEGREE LIMIT BREACHED – AND NOW?
PERSPECTIVES FOR SUCCESSFUL CLIMATE ACTIVISM – PART 2 We are struggling to advance climate protection at the grassroots level, to leave a livable planet for future generations, and those up top are fiercely kicking us in the shins. Does this make us feel powerless, or can we still be full of “active” hope despite everything? What role can the individual play in the great machinery? How can we set societal processes in motion “from below”? What characterizes successful strategies? We have sought answers from various perspectives and present them to you in two parts. Part 1 was published in NL #50.
Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 5 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #51•09/2026 Jonas Waack (taz): Climate protection or climate adaptation?
Is climate protection over? Do we instead adapt to the unavoidable? We all know that without effective climate protection, climate adaptation will also quickly reach its limits. Bare numbers on the development of global warming do not touch us, but reports on flood victims or people fleeing an out-of-control wildfire do. The problem is that more and more people consider climate adaptation more important than climate protection – a success of right-wing propaganda, but also rooted in the dwindling hope among many that global warming can be stopped.
However, the fact that people are thinking about climate adaptation can also be seen as an opportunity. If local activists involve people affected by a flood disaster, drought, or heat in adaptation projects, they would already have one foot in the door for the next climate project. A sense of self-efficacy arises on the ground, diverse groups get to know and trust each other.
“Those who feel left alone after flood disasters more easily turn to the extreme right.” In the United Kingdom, an NGO has been established that wants to help victims of flood disasters. “Flooded People UK” tries to network people locally to support each other, establishes connections to experts, and supports dealing with authorities and insurers. Flooded People has brought together many small protest islands, giving them the strength to demand quick and reliable help from the government. This also strengthens democracy, because people do not feel helpless and abandoned.
TIP: ABPFLASTERN COMPETITION A great way to do something for climate adaptation with little effort and to motivate many people to participate is the nationwide de-sealing competition “abpflastern”.
Wolfgang Schöllhammer, Newsletter Editorial Team By participating in the de-sealing competition “abpflastern”, anyone can bring more greenery and more life into the city. Everyone can participate – regardless of whether they are individuals, neighborhood groups, schools, churches, companies, or the municipal administration itself. An official registration by municipalities is not necessary, but a publicly visible participation and support by the municipality would of course be great.
The competition takes place every year between March 21 and October 31. The municipality that replaces the largest area of paving stones and concrete with flowering strips, flower beds, and green spaces during this period wins. Every area reported by October 31 is credited to the municipality via its postal code. For a fair comparison, the absolute number of stones of each individual municipality is not compared against each other, but rather the number of stones per 1,000 residents. Furthermore, each municipality competes in one of three leagues depending on its size, within which it can win.
The competition is a long-term project by students of the University of Social Sciences in Koblenz.
It is taking place for the second time this year and will continue next year. With the Unpaving Competition, people on the ground can be easily addressed and activated. And: Those who think about climate adaptation are also more likely to consider what needs to be done to limit global warming.

WORLDWIDE CLIMATE ACTIVISM Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 6 Image by macrovector on Freepik SOLAR SISTER UGANDA – SOLAR ENERGY FOR A BETTER LIFE Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa and one of the poorest nations in the world, with high rates of maternal and child mortality. At the same time, it serves as a haven for many refugees. Uganda is considered a peaceful region amidst areas plagued by crisis. Climate change is manifesting here through rising temperatures and a lack of rainfall. Extreme drought this year has led to crop failures and famine in certain regions.
In its energy policy, the government focuses primarily on oil extraction, a move that faces massive public opposition. Numerous organizations are protesting against the construction of environmentally damaging pipelines – including „End Fossil Occupy Uganda“, a grassroots movement of climate activists advocating for a phase-out of fossil fuels and a just energy transition in Africa. After all, Uganda has a far more sustainable energy source at its disposal: the sun.
„Solar Sister Uganda“ is advancing the energy transition through an innovative approach. Since 2009, the initiative has been training women to become independent entrepreneurs in the clean energy sector. Participants sell affordable solar lamps, solar cookers, and solar mobile phone chargers within their communities. In doing so, these trained women not only alleviate energy poverty in their region but also create jobs and secure their independence by earning their own income. The project demonstrates how targeted measures can integrate climate action, economic development, and gender equality.

Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 7 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 REPLY BY SUSANNE, P4F BONN, TO THE SPIEGEL ARTICLE:
"WHY IS THERE NO OUTCRY FOR MORE CLIMATE PROTECTION DESPITE HEAT AND DROUGHT?" YES, THERE IS.
In the science article from 06.08.2026, Susanne Götze analyzed why there is no outcry in the face of the heat summer, the drought, and the deaths.
"The summer of 2026 makes the climate crisis as tangible as rarely before. Yet even the climate movement has resigned itself and is preparing for the 'collapse'. Why warners rarely get it right, although they are right." and "The hope to win people back to climate protection through the tangible consequences of the climate crisis... is crumbling right now. The activists themselves now feel it: Apocalypse apparently does not generate anger, but apathy," she writes, among other things. In particular regarding the headline of the article and the above thoughts including the thematization of a decreasing size of FFF demonstrations, Susanne Walter from P4F Bonn wrote the following reply as an open letter to the editor:
For example, in Bonn, where I live, there is:
• a monthly vigil for climate protection • a lecture series (at Kult 41) • of course demonstrations – most recently a large demonstration plus Critical Mass with several hundred participants for bike lanes, public transport, traffic transition, climate protection • the GermanZero talks with members of the Bundestag plus a large signature campaign • protests before council sessions in the city hall • talks with council factions, municipal utilities, etc.
• the highly praised participation process Bonn4Future • the large Climate Stripes banner in use • a nationwide postcard campaign initiated here against the gas cost trap of Minister Reiche • art actions, carnival parade participation, the attached groups JeKiFa (Every Child a Bicycle), Tree Guardians, Citizen Solar Advisory, and so much more Just in Bonn!
The narrative behind your article is that only large-scale demonstrations show active climate groups. Luisa Neubauer has been trying to explain this for a while now: It has long since been a change towards diversification on the ground.
That many people want to vote for the deniers of the human-made climate crisis, the opponents of renewable energies and climate protection in the form of the destructive AfD, that many people voted for Friedrich Merz, and that all our climate actions find no ear with CDU/CSU and SPD, with Springer press and the gas-oil-pesticide industry – are the climate groups to blame for that?
"Where is FFF?" is really too cheap for me!
Who is responsible? The climate protection movement? The scientists who have been talking their mouths off for years and massively intensified in recent months? All full of despair?
Or rather the elected, informed, professionally advised, and oath-bound politicians of the democratic parties???!!!! Who??? Who is not listening?
Who does not want to? Looks away? Counteracts? Lobbies for gas and coal and sabotages renewable energies?
WHO???
THE CLIMATE MOVEMENT STILL EXISTS!
Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Page 8 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 You can no longer voluntarily sweep away what politics spews in a torrent at our feet!!!
• Ms. Reiche!
• Mr. Merz and our government spokesperson, who prattle about “weather”!
• Mr. Klingbeil, who misappropriates funds from the Climate and Transformation Fund!
• Transport ministers who want to build new motorways and seal off vast areas, instead of first and exclusively remediating the disaster in the existing infrastructure!!
Mr. Merz, who otherwise SILENCES about the crisis and 10,000 heat deaths!!!!! Deafening silence!!!!
What on earth is left for the climate movement and FFF but to try to reach lethargic, averted, and denying politicians and similarly minded large parts of the population at least where they themselves now realize what is going on? In the heat! In the water shortage!
Oh, one more thing:
Where are the farmers now, who loudly heckled Mr. Habeck and dumped manure on the roads – for diesel subsidies! Where are they now, where their crops wither – due to a lack of climate protection and more sustainable agriculture? Where are the tractor demonstrations in Berlin now??? NOTHING!!!
Where are the companies that have invested in sustainability and are now mocked by politics?
Will you become loud and visible?

Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Seite 4 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 Heinrich Strößenreuther: Klima-Aktivismus, aber richtig!

Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Seite 5 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 Jonas Waack (taz): Klimaschutz oder Klimaanpassung?
Ist Klimaschutz over?

WELT WEIT KLIM AAKTIVISMUS Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Seite 6 Image by macrovector on Freepik SOLAR SISTER UGANDA – SOLAR ENERGY FOR A BETTER LIFE Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa and one of the poorest nations in the world, with high rates of maternal and child mortality.
Nu merous organizations are protesting against the construction of environmentally damaging pipelines – including „End Fos sil Occupy Uganda“ , a grassroots movement of climate acti vists advocating for a phase-out of fossil fuels and a just energy transition in Africa. After all, Uganda has a far more sustain able energy source at its disposal: the sun.
„Solar Sister Uganda“ is advancing the energy transition through an innovative approach. Since 2009, the initiative has been training women to become independent entrepre neurs in the clean energy sector. Participants sell affordable solar lamps, solar cookers, and solar mobile phone chargers within their communities. In doing so, these trained women not only alleviate energy poverty in their region but also cre ate jobs and secure their independence by earning their own income. The project demonstrates how targeted measures can inte grate climate action, economic development, and gender equality.

Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Seite 7 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 REPLIK VON SUSANNE, P4F BONN, ZUM SPIEGEL-ARTIKEL:
Wer??? Wer hört nicht zu?
Wer will nicht? Guckt weg? Konterkariert?
WER???
ES GIBT DIE KLIMABEWEGUNG NOCH!
Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 09/2026 NEWSLETTER # 51 Seite 8 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #5 1•09/2026 Man kann ehrenamtlich nicht mehr wegkehren, was uns die Politik im Schwall vor die Füße kotzt!!!
• Frau Reiche!
Beim Wassermangel!
Ach, noch was:
