True wisdom and spiritual perfection are not attained through worldly education, but through humility, obedience, and illumination by the Holy Spirit, which is made visible in the person of Saint Hierotheos.
The true wisdom that has standing and does not fall is the wisdom directed toward God. It is the fruit and gift of the Holy Spirit to believing and humble people in the heart, that is, to the saints.
The text describes the life of Saint Hierotheos the Iberian (1686–1745) as an exemplar of spiritual perfection. It emphasizes his early upbringing in piety and his decision, despite a wealthy inheritance and an engagement, to take the monastic path. Hierotheos spends time on Mount Athos, studies in Europe, and recognizes the emptiness of worldly wisdom in comparison to divine illumination. He returns to his monastery, where through prayer and penance he performs healings and saves the population of Skopelos from a plague. The text commends his humility, his ability to foresee events, and his peaceful death in silence. It positions Hierotheos as a shining example during the period of Turkish rule. Saint Hierotheos the Iberian: A Fully Illuminated Spiritual Figure
Hagiography - Figures
13.09.2026
Lambros Skontzos, Theologian
The true wisdom, which has authority and does not fail, is the wisdom according to God. This is the fruit and gift of the Holy Spirit to people who are faithful and humble in heart, that is, the saints. The saints of our Church transcended worldly wisdom and reached divine illumination, shining themselves and illuminating others. Such a luminous personality, in dark times, was Saint Hierotheos the Iberian, who marked with his personality the spiritual journey of many people. He was an enlightened mind, a complete spiritual personality. A luminous beacon in the difficult years of the Ottoman rule.
He was born in Kalamata in the Peloponnese in 1686, to wealthy parents who were distinguished by piety and virtue. His father was named Dimos and his mother Asimina. While his mother was pregnant, a certain holy ascetic revealed to her that the child she would give birth to would become a vessel of God’s election. His pious parents transmitted to him the faith in God and taught him the path of virtue. Indeed, having the financial means, they gave him a serious education. They sent him to the best schools and to the most renowned teachers of the region to study. And he, having a strong will for learning and possessing exceptional sharpness of mind, became early on a rare spiritual personality. At the age of only seven years, he caused amazement for his erudition and his critical thinking. He avoided games and occupied himself with study. He particularly loved the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Fathers, which he engraved in his soul. As time passed, his thirst for learning grew!
When he completed his studies and reached marriageable age, his parents longed to see him a successful family man, who would manage their large estate and live a happy family life. Thus, according to the customs of the time, without asking him, they engaged him to a modest and wealthy girl. But he had other plans for his life. He intended to devote himself to God and to the service of the Church. However, because he did not want to distress his parents, he exercised patience and was tormented mentally.
But God, who knows the innermost thoughts of every person and provides for the course of his life, gave the solution. Sixteen days before his wedding, his parents died suddenly. Then Hierotheos spoke with his fiancée, explained to her his will, that he wants to live the unmarried monastic life, she understood him and thus they dissolved their engagement.
After some time, he went to Zakynthos, where some wealthy relatives of his resided. They advised him to go to Europe to continue his studies. However, Hierotheos was not enthusiastic about the proposal. He had in mind another great and incomparably higher spiritual place, Mount Athos, where humble monks and ascetics, through prayer and ascetic practice, acquired the wisdom according to God, which is incomparably higher than all the studies and wisdoms of the world.
He therefore decided to ascend to the “Garden of the Theotokos.” He found a certain holy hermit, with whom he lived together and became his disciple. A new chapter opened in his life. He immediately begins a struggle of personal purification and adornment with virtues. Under the guidance of the holy ascetic, he fights the flesh and elevates the spirit. In parallel, as a lover of learning, he passionately reads spiritual writings, synaxaria of saints, and theological treatises, which abounded on Mount Athos. He studies the life of the monks, but the downfall of some of them troubles him, filling his soul with sorrow and disappointment. Therefore, he thought of being led toward martyrdom, which he considered the shortest path to salvation. Moreover, we are in an era when thousands of Neo-Martyrs shed their blood for their faith in Christ. However, his spiritual father prevented him, telling him that martyrdom comes on its own, as an unexpected gift from God. He also reminded him of the word of the Apostle Paul regarding “lawful contest” (2 Timothy 2:5).
After some time, he went to the Holy Monastery of Iviron, where he was tonsured a monk and joined the brotherhood. However, the desire for martyrdom did not leave him; rather, it grew in his soul. The opportunity he sought was given to him. He was chosen, along with a delegation of monks from the Monastery, under the leadership of the hegumen, to travel to Constantinople for a certain matter of the Monastery. He believed that there, in the heart of the Ottoman Empire and of Islam, he would be given the opportunity to confess Christ and to bear witness for His sake. But in vain, no opportunity was given to him; God had another plan for him.
After this, he left for Wallachia. There he was ordained a deacon by the Metropolitan of Sofia, Auxentius, and he was given the opportunity to attend lectures by the famous Cypriot teacher Mark. Subsequently, he returned to Constantinople, where he studied philosophy under the also eminent Argive teacher Yakoumis. His thirst for learning was insatiable. For further higher studies, he went to Venice, reaching the peak of worldly knowledge. He had embraced all the wisdom of his time!
But, however, he felt a great void in his soul. He realized that the acquisition of worldly knowledge can only give a person pride and vanity. On the contrary, the humble approach to God and the illumination of the Holy Spirit can satisfy our soul. Therefore, he decided to return again to the Monastery of his repentance, Iviron, where he was enthusiastically welcomed by the brotherhood.
He begins an intense spiritual struggle, with unceasing prayer, vigils, repentances, study of the Holy Scripture and other spiritual books, fasting, and obedience. God rewards him. He was ordained a priest by the Metropolitan of Neocaesarea, James. He was already thirty years old. He intensifies his spiritual struggle and becomes an object of admiration by the other monks. Soon, signs of holiness are observed in him. He was granted the healing grace. Many patients, monks and laypeople, received healing and thus glorified God. And not only that. His reputation as a complete spiritual personality spread far, and a multitude of people rushed to receive his precious and saving advice.
At that time, a deadly plague fell upon the island of Skopelos. The terrified and desperate inhabitants learned about the holy hieromonk at Iviron. They asked him to help them. Then he, flooded with love, went, accompanied by monks, to the island, and with their endless prayers and supplications they averted the evil! He remained there for eight years, contributing to the spiritual cultivation of the inhabitants. Those weary from sin, the sufferings of life, and Turkish oppression found relief and comfort near him. A multitude of sinners were led to repentance.
He himself intensifies his spiritual struggle, and God rewards him with rare divine illuminations and revelations. He receives the gift of foreknowledge.
He foretold his own death. In order to spend the last days of his earthly life “face to face” with God, in quietness and undisturbed prayer, he took with him his virtuous obedient hieromonk Meletius, as well as the monks Joseph and Symeon, and took refuge on a nearby uninhabited island, Yura. There he spends his last days in quietness, silence, and unceasing prayer. After a short time he fell ill and delivered his soul to the Lord, at the age of 59. It was September 13 of the year 1745. His disciples buried his venerable body, which was fragrant. Later, when his relics were translated, his venerable skull was transferred to the Iviron Monastery, which is fragrant and performs miracles.
His memory is honored on September 13, the day of his osial repose.
