The canonical erection of the parish is the culminating expression of 18 years of communal dedication, embodying lived hope and solidarity through ritual celebration, social care, and missionary proclamation.
The text reports on the solemn canonical erection of the new parish 'Our Lady of Mount Carmel' in Jardim Roseli in São Paulo on July 16, celebrated by Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer. Father Bruno dos Reis Paula was installed as the first parish priest after the community had grown out of a pastoral initiative in the old community center. The history of the parish began in 2008, when Bishop Pedro Luiz Stringhini initiated its founding to facilitate access to church life for residents. Cardinal Scherer emphasized in his address the significance of the celebration in the context of the Assumption of Mary as a sign of hope. The new parish comprises, in addition to the main church, several communities and is assigned to the deanery of Santana and São Joaquim. Father Bruno highlighted that the erection was the result of 18 years of communal work and gratitude. The parish engages in social work through visits to the homeless and the distribution of food packages. The text describes the installation rites and the missionary task of proclamation and witness in everyday life.

There was no more space inside the temple, and other hundreds of people, seated on the sidewalks, also followed the realization of a dream: the creation of the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Jardim Roseli, in the eastern zone of the capital of São Paulo, on Sunday, the 16th, in a solemn Mass presided over by Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Metropolitan Archbishop of São Paulo, with among the concelebrants Bishop Cícero Alves de França, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Belém Region.
In the same celebration, Father Bruno dos Reis Paula, of the Order of Regular Clerics (Theatines), was installed as the first Parish Priest of the new Parish, which is in the Deanery of Santana and São Joaquim, of the Belém Region, and which was split off from the Parish of Saint John the Baptist. In addition to the mother church, it is composed of the Communities of Saint Joseph the Worker, Saint John the Evangelist, Our Lady of Aparecida, Saint Francis of Assisi, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The history of the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel began with a pastoral initiative that arose in the old Community Center, the Roseli Hall, which already hosted fraternities, festivals, and formation meetings. Perceiving the need to bring closer to the life of the Church residents who, although living near the Community of Saint Joseph the Worker, found difficulties in participating in the celebrations due to distance or schedules, Bishop Pedro Luiz Stringhini, then Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Belém Region, initiated the formation of the new community.
On February 3, 2008, the Community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was officially established, elevated to the condition of a pastoral area in that same year and already indicated from then on as the future parish mother church.
The name was chosen in devotion to an image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, donated by former residents and which, for many years, had remained in the community hall. Priests and seminarians of the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion helped in the formation of the first leaders and pastoral groups, under the care of the first priests responsible for the community, Fathers Mário Faleiros and Valdenício Antônio.
“You have been waiting for a long time and the day has arrived, so let us rejoice. Today, we celebrate in the Church the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, Mary, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, elevated to Heaven in body and soul,” said Bishop Odilo at the beginning of the Mass. “The creation of the Parish, carried out in this context, gains a special meaning for the community. This is a sign of great hope and joy for all of us,” he said.
Solange Maria da Silva Ferreira, 60, is a pastoral coordinator and extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion. She has followed the journey of the community from the beginning. “Here it was all hall. With the help of the community, the hall was taking on the face of a church. The celebrations gathered the people, we held bingo games, fairs, raffles, in short, the participation of the community was and is important in our journey,” she said in an interview with O SÃO PAULO.
Adriana Santos Pordeus Dedis, 44, coordinator of the Pastoral of Communication, highlighted that the journey “was intense and today we realize a dream. Our mission as a Parish is to proclaim the Gospel and translate the love of God through communal and missionary living. We are a united and solidary community.”
At the beginning of the celebration, the decree of canonical creation of the Parish was read and, subsequently, there was the installation of Father Bruno dos Reis Paula, CR, as Parish Priest.
As part of the rite of installation, Father Bruno received from the hands of Cardinal Scherer the book of the Holy Gospels, after having made his profession of faith. After the moment of prayer of the faithful, Bishop Odilo handed to the Parish Priest the keys of the church and of the tabernacle, the purple stole, and the oil of Baptism, signs of the sacraments that he may administer. The Priest also made the renewal of the priestly promises.
Dom Odilo emphasized that “the mission of the parish priest is sustained in three dimensions: to proclaim the faith, to nourish it through celebration, and to help the people witness it in everyday life. It is the mission of the parish priest to help the people have true faith, through the listening to the Word of God, through the liturgy, the sacraments, and prayer. But faith is not limited to listening and celebration. It needs to be translated into concrete life, through holiness, charity, and witness, following the teaching of Jesus.”
Father Bruno dos Reis Paula highlighted to the report that the canonical erection of the Parish is a moment of thanksgiving for the blessings received from God and for the active community participation.
“The creation of a parish responds to concrete pastoral needs. It was a dream that took 18 years to be realized. We are happy and grateful for the journey so far and hopeful in the mission that continues. The Parish is the space of celebration and of action. As a community, we gather to celebrate the sacraments and to welcome the needy brothers and sisters. We are a community of love, sharing, and fraternity,” detailed the first Parish Priest.
“We are a united and participatory community. Among the existing pastoral activities and services are catechesis, social pastoral care, altar servers, ministers of the Eucharist, ministers of the Word, the Communication Pastoral (Pascom), and other pastoral activities that contribute to the evangelizing mission,” mentioned the Father.
The Priest also recalled the social dimension of the new Parish: “Our community maintains assistance actions for families: visits to residents in a situation of street homelessness, a charity bazaar, and the distribution of approximately 80 basic food baskets monthly.”
