Arbitrary judgment about the afterlife fate of other people is theologically impermissible and socially harmful, as it limits the absolute sovereignty and mercy of God and divides the community.

Therefore, whoever passes such a judgment about a person has in fact limited something immeasurable, namely the mercy of Allah, the Exalted and the Praiseworthy, and appears to interfere with His will

The text addresses the Islamic theological position that the final fate of a person (Paradise or Hell) belongs to the hidden things (Ghaib) and is subject exclusively to the knowledge of Allah. It warns against carelessly judging the afterlife of others, as this limits the mercy of God and is considered presumptuous. The only exceptions are persons who have been named in the Quran or authentic Hadiths as inhabitants of Paradise or Hell. The text argues that such judgments can lead to arrogance, division within the community, and despair in those who are condemned. Instead, a balance between fear of God and hope in His forgiveness is recommended. This inner attitude is meant to motivate the believer to perform righteous deeds and to seek a good ending (Husn al-Khatima). The call is directed at the Muslim community to refrain from mutual condemnation and to maintain respect for differing legal opinions (Ijtihad).

Bayan Linnas BAYAN LINNAS SERIES NO. 364: JUDGING THE FINAL DESTINY OF HUMANS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SHARIA September 10, 2026 Nurul Adila binti Ali Number of views: 216 Introduction Life in this world is a field of trial and a temporary sojourn before humans step into the eternal, everlasting realm of the Hereafter. Within the framework of Islamic creed, the determination of a person’s final status, whether they attain happiness in Paradise or misery in Hellfire, is part of the unseen matters that lie solely under the will and absolute right of Allah SWT. No creature, whether angel or prophet sent by Allah SWT, possesses private knowledge to confirm the specific end of an individual’s life, except for what has been specifically conveyed through revelation. However, in today’s social interactions, there is often a tendency among some individuals to easily judge the Hereafter status of others, either by guaranteeing Paradise or assigning the punishment of Hellfire due to differences of opinion, misunderstandings, or overt sinful acts. This action not only violates the discipline of creed but also corrupts the Islamic etiquettes required by the religion. Exceptions Based on Specific Revealed Texts According to the principles of Sharia, those who believe and do righteous deeds will be admitted to Paradise, while those who are disbelievers and polytheists who die in a state of disbelief will be admitted to Hellfire. However, to specifically assign the reward of Paradise or the punishment of Hellfire to an individual is not appropriate unless there is a definitive proof (dalil qat’i) from the Quran or a sound hadith. Among the examples of such specific exceptions include: The Ten Companions Guaranteed Paradise (Al-'Asharah al-Mubashsharuna bi al-Jannah), such as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar bin al-Khattab, Uthman bin Affan, and Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them). The Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) and other individuals specifically named by revelation, such as Fatimah al-Zahra’, Khadijah binti Khuwailid, Hasan and Husain, and Bilal bin Rabah (may Allah be pleased with them). Specific individuals named as inhabitants of Hellfire through Sharia texts, such as Pharaoh, Abu Lahab, Abu Jahal, and Iblis. Prohibition of Determining the Final Destiny of Humans There is a sound hadith that explicitly forbids the act of arbitrarily determining a person’s place or status in the Hereafter, namely: From Jundab bin Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated: Its meaning is: “That a man said: By Allah, Allah will not forgive so-and-so. Then Allah the Exalted said: Who is it who swears by Me that I will not forgive so-and-so? Indeed, I have forgiven so-and-so, and I have rendered your deeds void.” Narrated by Muslim Al-Nawawi explains that yataalla means to swear, while al-alyah means an oath. In this hadith, there is evidence supporting the position of the Ahl al-Sunnah that sins can be forgiven without repentance if Allah SWT wills to forgive them. [1] In addition, Musa Shahin Lashin states that the above hadith serves as a warning not to judge someone as an inhabitant of Hellfire or to say that their sins will not be forgiven, because such a decision is the absolute right of Allah SWT, as well as His will and decree. Allah SWT forgives whom He wills, as stated in His verse: لِّلهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ وَإِن تُبْدُوا مَا فِي أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ يُحَاسِبْكُم بِهِ اللَّهُ ۖ فَيَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ‎﴿٢٨٤﴾ Meaning: “All that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth belongs to Allah. And if you disclose what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will take account of it and make it known to you. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills (according to His laws and regulations). And (remember), Allah is All-Powerful over all things.” (Surah al-Baqarah: 284) Therefore, whoever makes such a judgment against a person has, in reality, limited something vast, namely the mercy of Allah SWT, and seems to have interfered in His will by establishing only one possibility from His will. By doing so, he exposes himself to the punishment and reckoning of Allah SWT, for he may be held accountable for his own sin and for the sin resulting from his judgment against others. Indeed, it may be that Allah SWT causes the good deeds of the person to be nullified due to the evil he has done, while the person he has judged receives His forgiveness. Allah SWT may also replace the evil of that person with good. Thus, the main purpose of this hadith is not only to prohibit a person from causing another to despair of the mercy of Allah SWT, but is broader than that, namely prohibiting a person from limiting and narrowing the vastness of the mercy of Allah SWT. [2] The Bad Implications of the Attitude of Judging the Hereafter The tendency of a few in society to become “judges of the hereafter” by determining the final destination of paradise or hell for other humans brings about dangers and very serious negative implications. The act of preempting the decree of Allah SWT may lead to His wrath. As mentioned in the Hadith of Jundab above, the attitude of judging a person as a dweller of hell with full certainty is a form of boldness against the decree of Allah SWT and risks causing the reward of the good deeds of the one who judges to become void. In addition, the act of judging others as dwellers of hell may also give rise to the traits of arrogance, ostentation, and self-admiration in a person. Such attitudes often stem from the feeling of considering oneself better, purer, or more correct than others. This condition may cause diseases of the heart, such as arrogance and belittling others, to take deeper root within oneself. Furthermore, the act of judging a person as “certainly entering hell” and having no chance of receiving forgiveness may also close the door of repentance and cause humans to despair of the mercy of Allah SWT. When a person who commits sin feels that he has no hope of being forgiven, this condition may drive him to continue committing evil without striving to improve himself and return in repentance to Allah SWT. Besides that, the practice of labeling and declaring fellow Muslims as candidates for hell due to differences in ijtihad or specific errors may damage brotherhood and the unity of the Muslim ummah. Such an attitude has the potential to cause division, enmity, and hatred among Muslims, whereas differences of opinion in certain matters should be managed with knowledge, etiquette, and mutual respect. The Balance Between the Station of Fear (Khauf) and Hope (Raja’) According to Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Mandili, the station of fear (khauf) and hope (raja’) should be equal and balanced for the obedient person. Sayyidina Umar said, “If it were called out, ‘Enter Paradise, all creatures except one man,’ I would fear that I am that man. [3] If it were called out, ‘Enter the fire of hell, all creatures except one man,’ I would hope that I am that man. [4]” [5] When a servant stands before his Lord and strives to draw near to Him, it is fitting for him to combine the station (maqam) of fear (khauf) and hope (raja'). Let not his fear overwhelm his hope, causing him to despair of the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, the Most High. Likewise, let not his hope overwhelm his fear, driving him into the valley of sin and evil. On the contrary, a servant should balance these two stations so that he may attain the station of nearness to Allah, the Most High. If this is realized, he will acquire the characteristics of the group mentioned by Allah, the Most High, in His saying: تَتَجَافَىٰ جُنُوبُهْم عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ ﴿١٦﴾ Meaning: “Their sides turn away from their beds; they call upon their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have provided for them.” (Surah al-Sajdah: 16) Al-Maraghi interprets that they distance themselves from the beds they usually use for sleep. They do not sleep; rather, they pray to their Lord in a state of fear of His wrath and punishment, and they hope for forgiveness from Him, hoping for His bestowal of mercy and pardon. [6] The balance between the station of fear (khauf) and hope (raja') is the primary catalyst and driving force for a servant to remain steadfast in righteous deeds in order to attain a good ending, namely husn al-khatimah. Signs of Husn al-Khatimah Husn al-khatimah is a good ending for a Muslim, achieved through righteous deeds and the pleasure of Allah, the Most High. Among the signs of husn al-khatimah mentioned by the scholars based on the texts of the Sharia are: Uttering the kalimah shahada at the moment of death. This is based on a hadith narrated from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Meaning: “Whoever the last of his words is ‘There is no god but Allah,’ will enter Paradise.” Narration of Abu Dawud Sweating on the forehead at the time of death. This is based on a hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Meaning: “The sign of the death of a believer is the sweating of his forehead.” Narration of al-Tirmidhi Dying on Friday or on Friday night. This is based on a hadith narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Meaning: “There is no Muslim who dies on Friday or on Friday night except that Allah, the Most High, will protect him from the trial of the grave.” Narration of al-Tirmidhi Performing righteous deeds before death. In a hadith, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Meaning: “If Allah, the Most High, intends good for a servant, He makes him act. The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, asked, ‘How does He make him act?’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Allah, the Most High, grants him success to perform righteous deeds before his death.’” Narration of al-Tirmidhi Feeling joy and pleasure at meeting Allah, the Most High. This is based on a hadith narrated by Abu Musa al-Asy'ari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Meaning: “Whoever is happy to meet Allah, Allah is happy to meet him. And whoever feels reluctant to meet Allah, Allah also feels reluctant to meet him.” Narrated by al-Bukhari Therefore, after knowing the signs of a person who is granted husn al-khatimah, every Muslim must strive to attain a good ending to life by increasing their piety and righteousness, and by constantly seeking help and mercy from Allah SWT. In this regard, among the supplications that can be practiced as one of the efforts to achieve husn al-khatimah is: Meaning: “O Allah! Make the best part of my life its end, and the best part of my deeds its conclusion. And make the best of my days the day when I meet You.” Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni Conclusion In brief, the determination of a person’s final destination in the Hereafter is the absolute right of Allah SWT alone. Each individual is responsible for focusing on the purification and improvement of themselves through the balance of the attributes of khauf and raja’, while avoiding the attitude of judging or evaluating the endings of others, in order to protect oneself from arrogance and to avoid division within the community of believers. In Islam, the act of preempting the decree of Allah SWT by swearing or asserting the afterlife fate of any individual without specific evidence from revelation is strictly prohibited. Conversely, the appropriate approach to be taken by every Muslim is to pray for guidance and forgiveness for fellow human beings, and to constantly hope for husn al-khatimah for oneself. Maksudnya: “ Sesiapa yang akhir perkataannya “Tiada Tuhan melainkan Allah”, nescaya dia akan memasuki syurga .” Riwayat Abu Daud Berpeluh di dahi ketika meninggal dunia. Hal ini berdasarkan hadis yang diriwayatkan oleh al-Tirmizi bahawa Rasulullah SAW bersabda: مَوْتُ المُؤْمِنِ بِعَرْقِ الجَبِينِ. Maksudnya: Jika sekiranya Allah SWT menginginkan kebaikan terhadap hamba-Nya, maka Allah SWT menjadikannya sentiasa melakukan amal. Para sahabat RA bertanya, “Bagaimana dia menjadikannya sentiasa melakukan amal?” Maksudnya: “ Ya Allah!
