God's salvation is not limited to one people but extends to all humanity, which is expressed in universal mercy and in concrete solidarity with those who suffer.

The universalist message of this oracle reveals that salvation and deliverance through YHWH come to all the peoples of the earth and offer themselves to them.

The text analyses the biblical readings of the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) with a focus on the universality of salvation. It emphasises that the prophetic and Pauline texts prepare for the expansion of the concept of God from Israel to all peoples. The Gospel of the Canaanite woman is interpreted as a key text that, through the persistence of a Gentile woman, breaks through the boundaries of the circle of disciples. The theological exegesis connects these biblical motifs with the Church's identity as 'Catholic' and universal. A contemporary reference is made through the earthquake in Colombia, which is thematised in the prayer and the introduction. The text calls for living out divine mercy in solidarity with those who suffer and in justice. No demarcation against other groups is made; rather, an invitation is extended to all of humanity.

1 Reading from the book of Isaiah 56, 1. 6-7 To the foreigners I will bring them to my holy mountain The passage we are dealing with on this occasion belongs to the third part of the book of Isaiah, attributed to several anonymous authors, disciples of the singers of the Temple, who encouraged the faith of the people of Israel in their return from exile towards the fourth century BC. This oracle vv 1-8 intends to encourage the people to give to YWHW the true worship, which consists in the practice of social justice and to manifest the universality of Salvation. God announces that He will gather into one people all the children of Israel scattered throughout the world and will attract all the peoples of the earth so that they give the true worship to the God of Israel in Jerusalem, which will be called, by its temple, house of Prayer. In it find a place those who had formerly been excluded from the covenant, the foreigners and the eunuchs. The universalist message of this oracle reveals that the salvation and the liberation of YWHW comes and is offered to all the peoples of the earth. Psalm 66, 2-3. 5. 6 and 8 R/. O God, let the peoples praise you, let all the peoples praise you. XX Sunday of Ordinary Time (cycle A) August 16, 2026 2 This psalm reworks the priestly blessing (Nm 6,24 -26), this time applied not only to the people of Israel but to all the peoples of the earth; it includes no exclusive reference to the people of the covenant nor to the name of God. The action of God is linked to the knowledge of his face (of his ways), to the universal praise and to the justice among all men, with the blessing and the harvest of the earth. In the background of the psalm beats the Temple of Jerusalem, but it is not cited, for the whole world is the Temple. There is no people above others, nor a universal empire, only a world in concord praising the God of the whole earth. Reading from the letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Romans 11, 13-15. 29-32 The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable for Israel Paul writes the letter to the Romans, around the year 55 / 56, as a self-presentation before the Judeo-Christian community that had been formed and strengthened for several decades in the capital of the Empire. He writes it apparently from the city of Corinth, shortly before leaving for the city of Jerusalem, to bring them the fruits of the collection he has made in all the communities of Greece and Asia Minor. In this letter he strives to show the rectitude of his doctrine, thus overcoming those who had been dedicated to creating for him the bad reputation of attacking the Jewish faith. Within his argumentation he shows how the divine plan of salvation is not the exclusivity of the Jewish people. God offers his salvation to all, it is the work of his mercy that forgives the rebellion of men and in the rebellion have fallen all, Jews and Gentiles. Now, the rebellion of the Gentiles is prior to the announcement of the gospel, while that of the Jews is of now, for they have refused to see that God gives his love also to the Gentiles. 3 Paul makes known the saving plan to the Gentiles, so that they accept the love of the Lord and be saved; but, moreover, he wants in his ministry to awaken jealousy in the Jews so that they return to desire the mercy of God and they too remain justified. Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew 15, 21-28 Woman, how great is your faith The geographical displacement in this passage is so important that it is worth taking a look at it. What is said in barely two lines is, in reality, a considerable journey in the time of Jesus. To be in Capernaum and then end up in Tyre is a journey of several days. If one goes up by the basin of the Jordan river, one ascends the mountains of southern Lebanon and goes down to the coast by the basin of the Leontes river; one actually passes from one country to another. Therefore, Jesus is now in a foreign land. The protagonist of this passage is a pagan woman. She has no problems with laws or traditions, unlike the scribes and Pharisees. Her only problem is a sick daughter, which is why she approaches Jesus crying out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David.” This expression is already a confession of faith proper to the most fervent Jew who has believed in Jesus. She declares him Messiah (Son of David), recognizes him as sent by God (“Have mercy on me”), and as her “Lord.” What is astonishing is that here it is in the mouth of a pagan woman. The woman asks for mercy and in return receives silence from Jesus, an attitude justified by the teacher on the grounds that he has been sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. The expression “little dogs” refers to foreigners. What Jesus is saying is that it is not right to give the Bread of the Sons (lost Jews) to the foreigners (little dogs). In a magnificent movement of the narrative, the anguished mother transforms into the believer who presents herself with serenity and says, “Lord, help me.” However, Jesus responds with even more cruelty than silence. He rejects her and furthermore responds that his actions are solely for the benefit of his people. The woman twists the argument (“It is true, Lord; but even the little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table”) and not only obtains what she asks for, but also the greatest praise Jesus can give in the Gospel of Matthew: “Woman, how great is your faith.” Narratively speaking, the text shows that pagans are not bad or stupid. This Canaanite silences Jesus as soon as he opens his mouth; undoubtedly, Jesus lends himself to the game and encourages it. He knows from the beginning that he will perform the miracle, but he wants to make it clear that this pagan woman has great faith, great humility, and perseverance. It is the opening of God’s salvation to all the peoples of the earth. 5 1. The four readings show the universality of the Salvation given by the Father in his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Among the proper notes of the Church are One, Holy, Catholic (universal), and Apostolic. It is an unparalleled opportunity to proclaim that God makes no distinction of race, language, culture, people, or nation. We are all called by God to Salvation and reconciliation with all the peoples of the earth in Christ our Savior, in the union of the Holy Spirit who allows us to call ourselves children of one same Father of all peoples. 2. As children of one same Father, we are called to unite ourselves in praise as a single choir that in unison proclaims the mercy and holiness of Jesus Christ who has come to save all humanity, gathered by one same Spirit, who is the artisan of Justice and of Truth, of fraternity and Forgiveness, of care for the Common Home, and obedience to the Divine Will. 3. As the Canaanite woman, let us proclaim our faith in Jesus, the Son of David, whom we recognize as our Lord, and we implore his mercy and forgiveness for all our injustices. With our heart we believe and with our works we are artisans of justice and of fraternity. 4. Let us pray for the missions throughout the world so that day by day the Gospel of the kingdom of God may be known in more places and hearts. 6 Entrance Antiphon: Brothers and sisters all. The Sunday celebration gathers us again. In it, the Light of the Word and the Bread of Life are offered to us. Faith made prayer wishes to offer to God a pleasing worship, actualizing the sacrifice of Christ. In this celebration, let us also keep very present those who have suffered the consequences of the earthquake that has wounded our country. Let us commend those who have lost their lives, the wounded, the families living moments of anguish, those who have lost everything, and all those who work in rescue and aid efforts. May God grant them strength, comfort, and hope, and may our Christian solidarity become close and concrete. With our hearts set on God and trusting in His mercy, let us participate in this Eucharist with faith. Introduction to the Readings God’s exhortation to salvation, through the mouth of the prophet, is the practice of justice, in order to ensure a worship pleasing to God. The apostle exhorts the Gentiles in order to motivate his Jewish brothers to accept the call to salvation through the obedience of faith. The Lord saves a woman and her daughter, bringing her into faith, through a process that goes from silence as a response to the insistence in her supplication. The woman’s faith becomes humility that achieves what she seeks, inviting us to pray in this way to obtain God’s favor. 7 Prayer of the Faithful Presider: Brothers and sisters: To the Lord who makes no distinction of persons and who hears the prayer of those who are near and of those who are far away, let us present our confident prayer, saying: R/. Lord, do not stay far away, help us. 1. For the Universal Church, its pastors and faithful, that they may not forget anyone in their prayer and may make divine mercy felt to all men, especially to the indifferent and those who are far away. 2. For all who exercise authority, especially those who have just assumed the leadership of our country, that they may have the collaboration of all political forces and may make a common cause of the well-being, reconciliation, and peace of all Colombians. 3. For all who suffer from illness and for those who perform works of mercy in favor of those who suffer, that God may abundantly reward the good they do, and grant them strength of mind and the help of others. 4. For those who are prey to evil and incite others to do the same, for those who are far from the faith, for those deprived of their liberty due to their bad conduct, and for the possessed who are unaware of their situation, that they may always find those who guide their lives with the Word of God and begin their conversion. 5. For all who have been affected by the earthquake, that, amidst uncertainty and difficulties, they may find paths of reconstruction, receive the necessary help, and not lack the fraternal closeness of those who can lend them a hand; and for those who work in rescue, care, and aid efforts, that God may assist and strengthen them and stir in everyone a spirit of solidarity and fraternity. 6. For ourselves, that the Lord, with the grace of His sacraments, may help us to know the Gospel of Christ better, keep us from all evil, and move us to evangelize with our testimony. Presider: God our Father, who desires that all men be saved, clothe us with the same sentiments of Your Son Jesus Christ, so that –with our words and our deeds – we may always bear witness to Your mercy and Your love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 8 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle A, August 16 1. Accompanying: Have you ever asked for something with great desire? Have you waited patiently because you trusted that everything would turn out well? In today’s Gospel, we meet a mother who was very worried about her daughter. She did not belong to Jesus’ people; however, she sought out Jesus and did not cease to trust in Him, even though it seemed that no one was listening to her. Her faith was so great that Jesus was amazed and said to her: “How great is your faith!” and granted what she asked of Him. Jesus also hears our prayers. He knows what we feel and is always ready to accompany us. What is important is to approach Him with a heart full of trust. 2. Motivating: Authentic faith expresses itself through perseverance. In today’s words, this means that we do not give up. It is not a matter of stubbornness, but of the trust we have in the power of God’s love, thanks to hope. The woman in the Gospel teaches us that faith grows when we trust in Jesus, even in difficult moments. In the course of our Missionary Disciple Path, this Time for Cultivating Faith offers us an opportunity to speak with Jesus every day, to participate joyfully in the Eucharist, and to demonstrate our love by helping others. Every small gesture of kindness strengthens our friendship with Him. 9 3. Challenge Let us ask ourselves: • Do I trust in Jesus when I have a problem? • Am I persevering in prayer and in friendly dialogue with Jesus, or do I give up easily? • How can I demonstrate my faith through a good action? This week, when you face a difficulty or wish to ask for something important, seek a moment of silence and tell Jesus with all your heart: “Jesus, I trust in You. Help me to always do good.” Afterwards, demonstrate that trust by performing a good action for someone in your home, school, or community, without waiting for them to ask you. Remember: On a sheet of paper, draw a large heart. Inside it, write or draw a person for whom you wish to ask Jesus this week. Then write a word that expresses what you feel, for example: thank you, help her, care for her, heal her, or bless her. At the end, share your drawing with your family and together pray a short prayer for that person. 10 Introductory Invitation Welcome, boys and girls! In this Time for Cultivating Faith and following our Missionary Disciple Path, today we gather with great joy to celebrate the Eucharist. Jesus invites us to discover that the love of God is for all people. He always listens to those who seek Him with a heart full of trust. Let us prepare our hearts to encounter Jesus and to celebrate His love together. Invitation to the Readings Today we will discover how a person who truly trusted in Jesus received His help; He never ceases to listen to those who trust in Him. We will meet a woman who, out of great love for her daughter, did not stop asking for Jesus’s help. Let us listen attentively and discover how we too can always trust in the Lord. 11 Prayer of the Faithful Presider: Let us pray to the good Father, who always listens to the prayers of His children and strengthens our faith: R./ Good Father, strengthen our faith. 1. For the Church, that she may announce the love of God with joy and accompany all peoples to encounter Jesus. 2. For the rulers, that they may work for justice, peace, and the well-being of all families. 3. For the sick, for children who suffer, and for families living through difficult times, that they may find in Jesus comfort, hope, and strength; let us pray to the Lord. 4. For our community, that we may live this Time for Cultivating Faith, following the Missionary Disciple Path, always trusting in Jesus and giving witness to His love. Presider: Good Father, hear the prayers we place in Your hands with trust, and help us to grow each day in faith, hope, and love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Señor, no te quedes lejos, ayúdanos. 1.
