The conscious avoidance of water waste is a central expression of gratitude toward God and of responsibility for creation, going beyond mere economic considerations.
It is not about the water bill; it is about our relationship with our Creator, who created this water, made it available to us, and sent it down sweet and pure.
The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB that deals with the ethical responsibility toward the resource of water. It begins with a hadith that forbids waste during ritual washing (wudu), even at a flowing river. The preacher argues that water is a divine gift and at the same time a test, which is often disregarded through taken-for-grantedness and convenience. It is pointed out that access to clean water today is easy but not unlimited. The central demand is to consciously turn off the tap in order to avoid waste. This is understood as an expression of gratitude toward God and as protection of creation. The text concludes with a prayer for preservation from waste and for vigilance toward the divine gifts.

Our "Water Ethics"
(27.03.2026)
Dear brothers and sisters, beloved Muslims!
The exalted Allah repeatedly reminds us in the noble Quran of the blessings He has granted us in this world and the Hereafter. These blessings, which surround us from all sides, we use every day, and they are so numerous that we cannot count them. Unfortunately, it is precisely this that sometimes leads to them becoming ordinary to us. Not only that – we also fall into the feeling that they have always been there and will never cease. One of these blessings that we perhaps use most frequently nowadays, but whose great value we occasionally forget, is water.
Dear believers!
Water is – above all for us humans, but also for all living beings on Earth – a source of life. Through the rain that Allah sends down from the sky in fine droplets, our thirst is quenched, dead land is revived, plants grow, and trees bear fruit. Allah proclaims this in the noble Quran with the words: "We created every living thing from water."1
Another property that Allah has given water is its purifying effect. Thanks to today's possibilities, we can reach clean water at any time and without great effort, with just a simple movement of the hand. With this water we not only clean objects, clothing, and our houses, but also perform our ritual purification, Wudu, and the full-body washing (Ghusl). But beware! The water that Allah created and endowed with these properties is not only a great blessing, but also a great trial. For the water that flows so easily from the tap can unfortunately be very easily wasted.
How can we then, although we have such easy access to water, use it without wasting it? The guideline that our Prophet (s) has taught us is very clear: The Companion Abdullah ibn Amr reports that the Messenger of Allah (s) once passed by a Companion who was performing the ritual washing and said: "What is this waste?" When the Companion asked: "Is there waste in Wudu?", the Messenger of Allah answered: "Yes, even if you were on a flowing river."2
Dear brothers and sisters!
The message of Allah and His Messenger is clear: Water is intended for all living beings and must not be wasted. Just as we can open the tap with a small movement, we can also close it just as easily when we do not need the water while washing. Regardless of the reason – we must not neglect this. It is not about the water bill; it is about our relationship with our Creator, who created this water, made it usable for us, and sent it down sweet and pure. It is also about our responsibility towards His creation. Therefore, we should consciously and mindfully use our tap that runs "like a flowing river" in accordance with the practice of our beloved Prophet. If we observe this prophetic guideline, we revive one of his Sunna practices, come one step closer to his intercession, and at the same time contribute to the protection of Allah's unique creation.
I would like to conclude my sermon with a prayer: O Allah! Make us servants who are aware of their responsibility towards Your blessings! Do not take Your blessings away from us, O Allah! Protect us from every form of waste! Make us among those who appreciate the gift of water, are grateful for it, and do it justice! Amin, velhamdulillahi rabbilalemin.

Unsere „Wasserethik“
(27.03.2026)
Werte Geschwister, liebe Muslime!
Amin, velhamdulillahi rabbilalemin.
