Environmental awareness is a religious duty that follows from the recognition of creation as a divine trust and is expressed in concrete action such as planting trees and keeping the environment clean.
Let us preserve the environment that Allah has entrusted to us as an Amāna, and let us strive to pass this divine good on to future generations intact.
The text is a Friday sermon of the DITIB that presents environmental awareness as a religious duty. It draws on Quranic verses and hadiths that describe creation as a sign of God and present the Prophet as a model for respectful treatment of nature. Mount Uhud is cited as an example of the Prophet's spiritual connection with nature. Cleanliness is understood as an expression of faith and as a social responsibility. Mercy towards all living beings, particularly through the planting of trees, is at the centre. The environment is referred to as a divine trust (Amāna) that is to be passed on to future generations. The text calls for concrete actions: planting trees, preserving green spaces, keeping public spaces clean. It links the fulfilment of religious duty with practical environmental engagement.

﷽:
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"This is Uhud, a mountain that loves us and we love it."
A Requirement of Our Faith: Environmental Awareness
(05.06.2026)
Dear Believers!
Allah, the Exalted, created the heavens and the earth in a balanced measure and perfect order.[1] Mountains, seas, trees, animals, and all living beings are part of this divine order. The Quran calls upon us to contemplate creation with reflection and mindfulness. For every being in our environment is a sign that reflects the power and creative artistry of Allah.[2] Therefore, our treatment of the environment ultimately also reflects our attitude towards the Creator.
My Brothers and Sisters!
Our Prophet (s) showed us the best way to deal with the nature that Allah has created. He taught us to treat all creatures – whether living or non-living – with love, mercy, and responsibility. The Messenger of Allah never regarded the divine gifts as ordinary consumer goods, but showed respect and appreciation for each one of them. When he saw the mountain Uhud in Medina, he said: "This is Uhud, a mountain that loves us and we love it."[3] This statement belongs to the most beautiful examples of the deep spiritual connection he maintained with nature.
Among our most important duties towards the environment is to keep it clean. The Messenger of Allah (s) taught us that cleanliness is directly connected to faith. He even considered the removal of things that cause harm or inconvenience to people on their paths as a requirement of faith.[4] Therefore, keeping the environment clean is not an ordinary worldly matter. Rather, it means striving for the pleasure of Allah, making faith visible from the heart outwards, and remaining faithful to the Sunnah of the Prophet (s). For every believer, it is a responsibility before Allah to first keep one's own home clean and then the entire environment. A conscious believer knows very well: every polluted street, every destroyed green space, and every wasted gift ultimately constitute an encroachment on the common right of society. Therefore, he meets the creation, which Allah created in perfect order, with mindfulness and a sense of responsibility. He strives to the best of his ability to preserve this divine trust.
Dear Believers!
At the core of our environmental awareness is mercy towards all living beings on earth. For whoever shows mercy to the creatures, Allah, the Most Merciful, will also show His mercy to him. Our Prophet (s) particularly promoted the planting of trees, which is one of the most beautiful expressions of this mercy.[5] At the same time, he announced the good news that a person will continue to receive reward even after his death, as long as others benefit from the tree he planted.[6]
Dear Muslims!
Let us preserve the environment that Allah has entrusted to us as an Amāna, and strive to pass on this divine asset intact to the coming generations. Let us fulfill our responsibility by planting trees, preserving existing green spaces, and avoiding anything that affects the natural balance. Let us keep our houses, mosques, streets, playgrounds, schools, workplaces, public transport, and all communal living spaces, our entire environment, clean and well-maintained.
May our Lord make us among those of His servants who beautify this earth entrusted to us, are grateful for every gift, and meet nature with mercy. May He count us among those who do not cause corruption, but bring about good; who do not destroy, but rebuild.

Eine Erfordernis unseres Glaubens: Umweltbewusstsein
(05.06.2026)
