Truthfulness in the workplace is not merely a professional virtue but a religious commandment that binds both employees and employers and is to be understood as an expression of servitude to Allah.
Honesty in the workplace is not only an expression of professional ethics but also a sign of our servitude to Allah.
The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB Sermon Commission that presents truthfulness as a central moral principle of Islam. It refers to a Quranic verse (Maide 5:119) in which the truthful are promised Paradise, and to two hadiths that emphasize honesty and the timely payment of wages. The workplace is presented as an important domain in which honesty and integrity are tested. The text addresses both employees and employers and calls on both sides to be honest, responsible, and fair. It warns that the loss of truthfulness damages mutual trust and the relationship between supervisors and employees. The sermon calls for work to be carried out conscientiously, entrusted matters to be protected, and lawful earnings to be made the foundation of life. Honesty in the workplace is understood as an expression of professional ethics and at the same time as a sign of servitude to Allah.

Truthfulness in the Workplace
(24.07.2026)
Dear Muslims!
Our noble religion, Islam, aims to bring us closer to Allah through acts of worship (Ibade) and, at the same time, to help us mature through a noble character. Therefore, our religion has established moral principles that encompass all areas of life. One of these principles is truthfulness. Allah, the Exalted, promises the truthful in the Noble Quran the following: “...This is the Day when the truthfulness of the truthful will benefit them. For them are Gardens of Paradise, through which rivers flow, in which they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. This is the great success.”1 Therefore, the believer strives to always be sincere and honest in his words, behavior, and actions.
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
We spend a large part of our lives in the workplace. However, the workplace is not only the place where we earn our livelihood, but also an important area in which our honesty and sincerity are tested.
One who works honestly fulfills his duties conscientiously and punctually. He does not neglect the tasks entrusted to him, uses his working time responsibly, and performs his work carefully. For he knows that each of his deeds will first be judged before Allah.
Honesty in the workplace is not only a virtue expected of employees. The employer, too, must be honest and trustworthy towards his employees. He has the duty to keep his promises, to pay wages in full and on time, and to carefully guard against deceiving his employees, doing them injustice, or exploiting their labor. In this context, our Prophet (s) said: “Give the worker his wage before his sweat has dried.”2, thereby making clear the employer’s responsibility towards the effort of his employees.
Dear Believers!
Where truthfulness is lost, mutual trust suffers. Where mutual trust suffers, the relationship between superiors and employees suffers, and one begins to disregard the rights of the other. But the believer knows that it belongs to his servitude towards Allah to remain honest even when no human being sees him. For he never forgets the words of our Prophet (s): “Always adhere to truthfulness! For truthfulness leads to good, and good leads to Paradise... Beware of lying! For lying leads to evil, and evil leads to Hell.”3.
Our task today is to perform our work in the best possible way, to protect things entrusted to us, not to deviate from truthfulness, and to make permissible (halal) earnings the foundation of our life. Let us not forget: Honesty in the workplace is not only an expression of professional ethics, but also a sign of our servitude towards Allah.
May Allah, the Exalted, make us among those servants who are always truthful.

Wahrhaftigkeit auf dem Arbeitsplatz
(24.07.2026)
Werte Muslime!
