Human beings are on the way toward a future in which they must give an account for every deed, and they should prepare for this encounter through daily self-examination.

Let us ask ourselves this question every day: "Where is our current path leading us?" Where are we going? Where are we going as a society? Where are we going as Muslims? Where are we going as humanity?

The text is a DITIB Friday sermon on Sura al-Takwir (81). It is presented as one of the suras that deeply moved the Prophet and would have turned his hair white. The sermon describes the cosmic signs of the Day of Judgment: the sun's extinguishing, the falling of the stars, the shaking of the mountains, the boiling of the seas. This is followed by the resurrection and the individual reckoning, illustrated by the example of the buried-alive girl. The sura is interpreted as an admonition for all the world that wishes to take the straight path. The sermon directs the question "Where are you going?" to the listeners and calls for self-examination. It closes with a supplication of the Prophet against bad character, bad deeds, and false beliefs.

"Messages from Surah At-Takwir" (01.11.2024) Our Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that some Surahs deeply moved him and even caused him to age. The verses depicting the terror of the Day of Judgment and the responsibility of man left deep traces in his noble heart. One of the Surahs that caused the hair of the Prophet to turn gray is Surah At-Takwir.1 In my Friday sermon today, I would like to speak about this Surah. Dear Believers! Surah At-Takwir stands in seventh place in the order of revelation. It was revealed during the Meccan period and comprises 29 verses. It begins with a terrifying description of how the universe will be destroyed. A picture of the coming future is drawn before our eyes: A time will come when the sun will extinguish; the stars will fall one by one, and the mountains will be torn from their places. This event will be so shocking that man himself will no longer perceive the things he loves in this world. The balances of nature will be so severely disturbed that even wild animals hostile to one another will stand side by side. Volcanic eruptions will bring the seas to a boil, and the oceans will literally transform into boiling cauldrons.2 These terrifying images are only a part of the great changes that will occur with the advent of the Day of Judgment. Afterwards, every person will be held accountable for their deeds. The soul and the body, which were separated in the process of dying, will be reunited and reshaped with the Resurrection. Then, the reckoning for deeds will have to be rendered. The girl who was buried alive solely because of her gender will be asked for what sin she was killed. All murderers will stand before the court together with the children they killed and be held accountable. The books of deeds will be opened, and all hidden truths will come to light. The fire of Hell will be kindled, Paradise will be brought nearer, and man will learn on that day what he has done.3 Dear Believers! In the Surah, the events after the arrival of the Day of Judgment and the re-creation by our noble Creator are described. His messages are continued with the following words: "I swear by the stars that flow in their orbits and rise and set, and by the night when it darkens, and by the morning when it breathes! The Quran is truly the word of a noble messenger. And your companion is not possessed; truly, he saw the Archangel Gabriel, and he does not conceal from you the knowledge of the Unseen. Nor is the Quran the word of a condemned Satan. (…) The Quran is only a reminder for all the world, for each of you who wishes to take the straight path." (…)4 My Brothers and Sisters! Life is a journey, and man is a traveler on this path. The noble Allah, who is both the owner of the path and of the traveler, asks us in verse 26 of Surah At-Takwir: "Fe eyne tezhebûn?/Where are you going?" My Brothers and Sisters! Let us ask ourselves this question every day: "Where does our current path lead?" Where are we going? Where are we going as a society? Where are we going as Muslims? Where are we going as humanity? To the question "When will the Day of Judgment break, O Messenger of Allah?" our Prophet replied: "What have you prepared for it?"5 Are we prepared for death, my Brothers and Sisters? Are we ready for the Resurrection? Are we prepared for that great Judgment, in which we must render an account for the opportunities granted to us?6 May the noble Creator allow us to be among those who are ready for the journey to the Hereafter. I would like to conclude my words with a beautiful supplication formulated by our Prophet: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from a bad character, bad deeds, and false beliefs.”7 The DITIB Sermon Commission 1. Tirmidhi, Sunan, Tafsir al-Quran, 56. 2. Takwir, 81/1-6. 3. Takwir, 81/7-14. 4. Tirmizi, Sunen, Tefsiru’l-Koran, 56. 2. Tekwir, 81/1-6. 3.
