An education that rests on faith in God, love of the fatherland, and scientific education forms complete personalities who walk peacefully and responsibly in society.
A triptych that I could propose is: knowledge and faith in God, knowledge and love of the fatherland, scientific education and training.
The text advocates for an education that shapes young people into complete personalities and is to solve existential problems. As a basic prerequisite, respect for teachers and the students' awareness of their duty to learn are mentioned. The speaker proposes a triptych: knowledge and faith in God, knowledge and love of the fatherland, and scientific education and training. The Christian message of the descended Logos is presented as an answer to metaphysical questions, which are to be learned from Holy Scripture and patristic teaching. Love of the fatherland is not to be chauvinistic, but is to take precedence for Greece, whose culture and history are regarded as a light for humanity. Scientific education is to encompass comprehensive knowledge of all subjects, especially of classical education. The text emphasizes that education is not to produce economic tools, but is to shape the inner being of the human being, so that young people walk peacefully and without violence in society.

Triptych for Our Education
Church and Society
16.09.2026
Archimandrite Kyrillos Kostopoulos, Hierodeacon of the Holy Metropolis of Patras, Doctor of Theology
For a Nation to preserve its History and to be shaped for the better from a sociological, cultural, humanitarian, educational, and primarily—concerning our own Greek Nation—from a moral perspective, so that all existential problems of man are resolved, it is indeed necessary that the utmost attention be paid to the Education which our young men and women receive from primary through tertiary education.
A basic prerequisite for proper learning on the part of the children is, on the one hand, respect towards their teachers and professors, which is fitting for them to possess, and, on the other hand, a deep sense of their position, namely that they are students, that they are “under apprenticeship.” This means that they have the obligation and duty to be taught, but also to internalize what they are taught, in order to be completed as personalities and to proceed correctly in our society. Certainly, the personality of the educator, his education, his character, and even his external appearance (attire, etc.) will contribute greatly to this. Naturally, the upbringing of the children by their parents holds a primary role.
However, what should be the foundations of our Education, upon which it will rest, so as to form complete personalities who will constitute solutions and not problems for our today’s inconsistent and faltering society?
A triptych that I could propose is: knowledge and faith in God, knowledge and love for the Fatherland, and scientific education and training.
It is known that Socrates said that, for the world to be saved, it is imperative that either some man ascend to heaven or someone from heaven descend to the earth. The latter happened. The Son and Word of God the Father descended and became man, and as the God-man Lord He lived on earth and answered with His life and His teaching all the existential and metaphysical problems of man. For example: “Who created the world and man?” “How will man live and proceed in this life with love, joy, peace, without anxiety and bondage to matter?” “How will he be liberated from his passions and weaknesses?” “How will he overcome decay and death?” The answers to these questions exist in the Holy Scripture and its interpretation, the Patristic teaching. All of this needs to be taught to the child from a young age, so that it is deeply implanted within him, in order to be guided by it towards the truth. Thus, he will be completed as a correct and useful personality, where he will know and love his Creator God, but also his fellow man.
Besides these, it is imperative that our Education provide our young man and woman with a motive of love for our Fatherland. I certainly do not mean that they should become chauvinists. A truly Orthodox Greek does not confine the framework of his love to only his own fatherland. And this is because he is ecumenical, catholic, and loves all the fatherlands of the world and all the peoples. However, necessarily, the love for his own fatherland must take precedence, especially when it concerns our Greece, whose culture and history constituted and constitute a light for all humanity. Consequently, it becomes necessary that the new Greeks be taught the unadulterated and objective truth of our History, so that they may truly love our Fatherland.
Finally, concerning scientific education and training, which is provided, of course, at all levels, it is indicated that it should be developed in such a way that the child, before specializing in the scientific field he desires, has acquired substantial comprehensive knowledge of all subjects, not only those concerning the exact sciences, but primarily those focusing on Classical Education.
One final, but no less significant, observation is that our Education must not overlook the fact that our young people are psychosomatic entities and it is imperative that they be educated as such beings. True education does not aim to produce people—economic tools, according to Marx—with the goal of their survival and the development of the economy, but primarily aims at the formation of the inner “being” of the human. And for this to happen, it is necessary that our Education provide not only scientific knowledge, but primarily the knowledge and faith in God the Creator, as well as the knowledge and love for the Fatherland. Only in this way will the character of our young people be formed healthily and naturally, so that they may walk in our society with a creative, peaceful, and loving disposition toward their neighbor, without violence, without erosion or abolition of values, and without the destruction of institutions.

16.09.2026
Ποιες, όμως, χρειάζεται να είναι οι βάσεις της Παιδείας μας, στις οποίες αυτή θα στηρίζεται, ώστε να διαμορφώνη ολοκληρωμένες προσωπικότητες που θα αποτελούν λύσεις και όχι προβλήματα για την σημερινή αλλοπρόσαλλη και παραπαίουσα κοινωνία μας;
