Unshakeable fidelity to the Christian faith, even under cruel torture and death, is the highest witness and is rewarded by God with martyrdom and eternal beatitude.
They answered their mother that they would not betray their faith in Christ, even defying the threats of terrible martyrdom and death.
The text recounts the hagiographic legend of Saint Sophia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Love, who lived in Rome in the second century. Sophia, a noble widow, raised her daughters in the Christian faith and named them after the three theological virtues. The family was reported to the Roman authorities because they refused the imperial cult of the gods. Emperor Hadrian had them arrested and attempted to move them to idolatrous sacrifice through flattery and threats. The daughters, who were between nine and twelve years old, refused the sacrifice and were cruelly tortured and finally beheaded. Sophia was allowed to bury her daughters and died three days later in prayer. The text serves as hagiographic instruction and celebrates martyrdom as a witness of faith.

Saint Sophia and her holy daughters Faith, Hope, and Love
Hagiography - Forms
17.09.2026
Lambros Skontzos, Theologian
The family constitutes a primary value for our Christian faith, which in ancient times was characterized as the "household church." One of these holy families was that of Saint Sophia and her daughters, Faith, Hope, and Love.
They lived in the 2nd century AD, when the idolatrous and depraved Emperor Hadrian (117-138) ruled in Rome. They were from Italy. Sophia was of noble birth. She was widowed very young, remaining with her three daughters. She lived a virtuous and pure life, raising her three offspring as true Christian daughters, differing from the daughters of the idolaters, who were raised in the licentiousness dictated by the worship of their immoral "gods." She gave them, not by chance, the names of the three supreme Christian virtues, which the Apostle Paul mentions, "now faith, hope, and love abide" (1 Corinthians 13:13).
For some reason, she was forced to move with her daughters to live in Rome, the great city, where the most vulgar form of idolatry prevailed and licentiousness flourished, where they continued to live the Christian life precisely, without being affected by the moral decline of the idolaters. Moreover, they tried to demonstrate the new life in Christ through their example. However, the Roman idolaters, who hated the Christians to death, denounced them to the authorities, stating that they did not honor the "gods" of the empire and did not participate in the established sacrifice in honor of the "god" emperor. This, in any case, meant under Roman law ultimate treason and was punished with death, unless they changed their minds.
Antiochus, the governor of Rome, informed Hadrian that the patrician Sophia, together with her three daughters, were Christians. The emperor ordered them to be arrested and brought before him as prisoners. He tried with flattery to persuade them to deny their faith and to sacrifice to the idols. Then he separated them, imprisoning the mother separately from her daughters, so that they could not encourage each other. However, Sophia found a way and communicated with her daughters, to whom she advised steadfastness in their faith at any cost. They answered their mother that they would not betray their faith in Christ, defying even the threats of terrible tortures and death. It should be noted that Faith was twelve years old, Hope ten, and Love nine!
The judge, with flattery and threats, tried to persuade the pure Christian daughters to sacrifice to the idols. But they answered him with one voice that Christ is the Bridegroom of their souls and that they had no intention of betraying their love and faith for Him. He, while marveling at the heroic resolve of the three underage girls, filled his soul with anger. He decided to separate them, imprisoning them in separate cells, hoping that he could more easily change their minds.
Then the martyrdoms began. They started with Faith. They brought her before him, urging her to sacrifice to the "goddess" Artemis, as the maidens of the idolaters did. She refused, and for this reason he handed her over to the torturers. They stripped her and whipped her until she fainted. They cut off her breasts, but instead of blood running, milk ran! They laid her on a red-hot grid, and while her young body was being tortured, she was praising God. Afterwards, they threw her into a red-hot cauldron of pitch, but she was miraculously saved, causing the amazement of her executioners. Finally, they beheaded her.
Then they brought Hope before him, whom he urged to sacrifice to Artemis. She boldly refused and condemned their tactic of demanding that she act contrary to her faith. They subjected her to tortures. After stripping her, they savagely whipped her with ox-hide whips. Then they threw her into a red-hot furnace, but God saved her to show the idolaters His power. Subsequently, they hanged her on a wooden cross and tore her childish flesh with iron nails, and then threw her into boiling pitch. God again saved her, to the great vexation of her torturers. Enraged, they beheaded her.
Then it was the turn of nine-year-old Agape. They believed that the martyrdom and death of her sisters would be enough to break her childish soul and make her sacrifice to the abominable “goddess.” However, she too confessed her faith in Christ with great courage and sought martyrdom to go meet her holy and heroic sisters in heaven. Then the executioners hanged her and stretched her childish limbs, so that the joints of her bones broke. Afterwards, they also led her to the red-hot furnace. When they arrived there, the heroic daughter jumped by herself into the raging flames. But the miracle happened again; the flames did not touch her! In fact, the flames left the furnace, falling upon the idolaters, burning many to death! Finally, they beheaded her as well, completing the triple sacrifice.
Their mother Sophia was allowed to approach the holy relics of her heroic daughters. She embraced them, kissed them tearfully, thanking God that her holy offspring had not betrayed Christ and that she herself was deemed worthy to become a mother of Martyrs. Then she anointed them and subsequently buried them with honors in a nearby secret chapel. After three days, and while she was praying over the tombs of her Martyr daughters, she begged God to take her from this world and lead her to her daughters. God heard her prayer, and she expired at that very moment. Their holy memory is celebrated on September 17.
