Christians who hold fast to Jesus in persecution and poverty are rich and will receive the crown of life, because Jesus has already overcome death.
The text is a sermon on the second of the seven letters to the churches in Revelation, specifically to the church in Smyrna. The preacher reads the letter aloud and emphasizes that Jesus introduces himself as the First and the Last, who was dead and has come to life again. He explains the historical situation of the Christians in Smyrna: persecution, economic exclusion by guilds, and poverty. Jesus is presented as comfort and support, because he has already overcome death. The preacher encourages the listeners to learn Bible verses by heart, so that the Holy Spirit can remind them of them in difficult situations. He asks about the capacity to suffer of the present-day church and warns against mere 'fair-weather praise and worship.' The text concludes with the appeal to remain rooted in Jesus and to give support to others, especially in difficult times.

Welcome to the sermon of FHG Dresden. We wish you a rewarding time. You can find more information about our church at dresden.fhg.de. Doing what we just sang is possible in Germany and it is great. Do that. In every country it is possible and it is not possible at all times. We are currently as a church in the services in a small sermon series. Seven letters that Jesus wrote to seven churches, which you can find in the Bible in the last section of Revelation. And I would like to talk again today about the letter to Smyrna. I already said something about it last week, but it was only very brief, because we had a baptism service. Then I spoke about the Dulas, who was there and therefore today a few more thoughts about it. What Jesus says here can shake you. It can shake you among other things if Jesus is for you merely only a helper to a simpler life. What Jesus says here can also massively encourage you if he is for you a helper to eternal life. So if there is this perspective beyond that. Maybe, let's see what you are afterwards, shaken or encouraged maybe both. Let's see. But at the beginning this letter again, this is the shortest of these seven to Smyrna. And Jesus says this, John writes this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna, this means the church leader is meant. This is the message of the First and the Last, who was dead and became alive again. I know your sufferings and your poverty but you are rich. I know the slander of those who work against you, who claim to be Jews but are not, because their assembly is an assembly of the devil. Do not be afraid of the sufferings that are to come. The devil will throw some of you into prison and try you. You will be persecuted for ten days. Remain faithful until death. Then I will give you the crown of life of eternal life. Whoever is ready to hear, he hears what the Spirit says to the churches. And whoever is victorious, to him I will. Whoever is victorious, the second death will be able to do him no harm. I learned these seven letters by heart in the spring, because I became aware that it is purest speech of Jesus and one can occupy oneself in one's heart with worse things than the speech of Jesus. And I say that because on Friday, again the 30 teens in the BU started. Are B.U.L. here today? I see some hands. And they were announced, I hope not threatened, that they will learn the Bible verse in the next two years. And I wanted to say to the B.U.L. and those who are here, hey, we do not only expect that from you that you learn something, but we learn ourselves. And I learn God's word by heart because with that sentences from the Bible become valued in my heart. And I encourage you, if you go to the BU, learn the verse. I know, there is a reward. I do not get a reward for that. You get a reward. There are vouchers. For what? I unfortunately forgot. Laser tag. And so and other things. But with that we only want to encourage you, learn that, because it may be that you now at 13, 14 still do not know why should I learn that. But there will come moments where you are in situations in your life and you will be grateful to be able to draw on this treasure in your heart. On sentence and sentence that you have learned. And therefore I would like to make that important to you. So, Smyrna means so much as myrrh. Myrrh is a gum resin that flows from the tree bark. Bitter in taste, but sweet in its scent. And that very aptly describes the situation, the phase at that time in church history of this church. Christians experienced a storm of persecution. But they proved a faithfulness and a love that in all bitterness a sweet
Fragrance was for God and for people. And in order to stand firm in the storm, you need something to hold on to. And with his first sentence, Jesus Christ gave the Christians such a hold. He said, I am the first and the last, the one who was dead and has become alive again. Jesus Christ was not just simply there at some point and then died and was gone. No, as I said, he has risen. And he will still be there at the end, no matter where you are going through right now. Jesus is there. No matter who or what is making your life difficult right now, it will pass. The person will pass. They will disappear at some point. But one remains: Jesus. I love an old hymn text that I sometimes carry around in my heart, because I have also partially learned it by heart. It is called: They had to bury them, those who had commanded the world to dig and their word did not stand. Their houses will fall, their coins are no longer valid, those that were found in the earth. Their names are forgotten, their songs unsung, their rich people empty. Their seals are broken, their languages unspoken. Their law is long since no longer valid. But Jesus' name will stand. Jesus' kingdom will never perish. His birth is valid for all time. To Jesus all things will yield and no death can reach him. Jesus reigns in eternity. All things pass, Jesus remains. And Jesus says, I am the first and the last, the one who was dead and has become alive again. So no matter where you are going through right now, it will pass. No matter who is making your life so difficult right now, they will pass. Jesus remains. And he is with you in there. And that is what he tells them. I was dead and I am alive. With this, Jesus assures his leading followers that he had already been where they are probably soon going: into death. When I as a child had to go down into the cellar, I always ran behind my parents. Never ahead. We make it a bit eerie, our cellar. But I had no problem with running behind my father. Because where my father had already set his foot, I could go. And Jesus tells his followers: You are looking death in the face. But do not forget, I was before you there. And I have overcome this death. And I have taken all the terror from death, and by the way, Jesus tells his followers: When he closes these eyes here on earth, you will not see death. So you will close your eyes here at some point. The chance of dying is at 100%. But you will not see death. Whom will you see? I know, that is a cheap answer, but it is true. Jesus. You will see him. To each of the seven churches, Jesus presented himself differently. Each time with what the church just had to hear in that moment, what they needed. They had to hear anew who Jesus is. And that was different for each church. The question is, how would Jesus present himself to you right now? In your situation? How would Jesus present himself to you? When you read God's Word, when you perhaps even carry one or another thing you have learned in your heart around with you, the Holy Spirit will remind you precisely in your respective situations of who Jesus Christ is. Because that is the job of the Holy Spirit. He will remind you of everything that Jesus has said. But for him to be able to remind you, you first have to have heard it, read it, recognized it, accepted it. And friends, that is why we always encourage you to do something with the Bible, whether it is a reading Bible or something else. Young people, learn it by heart, what is being presented to you now in the B.U. Otherwise the Holy Spirit cannot remind you, but that is what he wants. And I have the expectation that I will be reminded by the Holy Spirit in worship. I also have the expectation that others, that God reminds me through others in my everyday life. God is not dependent on what you have read and learned. As good as that is. But I am grateful that God reminds me through others. And I
will sit in the service with an expectation. Holy Spirits, remind me. I do not sit in the service without expectation. Why did the Christians in Smyrna suffer and were poor? There was in Smyrna a small but all the more fanatical group that worshipped the emperor in Rome. Fanatical. And to worship the emperor, to venerate him as God, to smear honey around his mouth and to fawn over him. That secured him the financial support from Rome. Christians refused, they said, we worship only Jesus Christ and not the emperor. And with that they were a threat to the prosperity of Smyrna. And on top of that, Smyrna was dominated by guilds, so associations of craftsmen and merchants. And no guild wanted to admit someone whom one had to assume would get into trouble with the emperor and then have to hand over money again. So the Christians were excluded, could not trade, could not really earn much, and that is why they were poor. But what were the Christians good for, they were cheap gladiators, to make fun of them and to let them fight in the arenas. Justinus was known for having defended the Christian truth and was then brought before the emperor Aureus, accused. And he is supposed to have said this one sentence, so probably more, but this sentence became famous, he said before his execution, no one who is of sound mind will give up truth for error and evil. No one who is of sound mind will give up truth for error and evil. Thereupon he was flogged and finally beheaded. And what does Jesus say about that? He says, I see your sufferings. From our observer's position one could now easily say and ask, God, what kind of one are you? And am I supposed to trust you? You really let your children down. You could change something. Justinus would probably reject your question and say, Jesus was with me. I keep asking myself from time to time, how able to suffer are we as a congregation? How able to suffer am I? How much is our praise worth in our services? Would our praise to God fall silent if, for example, war spread to Germany? If it would fall silent, everything we sing today would not be real. Then it would only be a nice prosperity sing-along. Our Ukrainian brothers and sisters can perhaps tell us a lot about what it means to worship God under such circumstances. And there I rather pray to Jesus, rooted, our heart is set on you and on your word. That our praise is not only a fair-weather praise and our confession to him not only a fair-weather confession. It is repeatedly reported of the persecuted that, in all their pain, in all their suffering, in all their despair, they still have this deep experience that Jesus is with them. And Jesus saw, when he looked at the pain, he saw that they are rich despite everything. Although they are excluded, economically sidelined, although they are persecuted and put down, he says, you are rich, because Jesus himself was allowed to be in their midst, this treasure, this wealth. And you, I wish that this wealth of Jesus Christ in our congregation is not simply just there because Jesus is there, but that people around us keep noticing it. We carry with Jesus Christ a wealth of love, of kindness, of friendliness, of gentleness, of passion, of courage, of overcoming, also of ideas and of all possibilities in us. We are richer than Jeff Bezos and all those who are called like that, Elon Musk, in money. Are we richer in what God gives us? Let the people around you notice that. If times should become more warlike, as some suspect, then our society needs Christians who are as firmly rooted in Jesus Christ as those in Smyrna were. Christians who give support and themselves demonstrate stance. Christians,
who encourage others and are themselves courageous in all of this. And Christians who have a hope that goes beyond this world, that does not end with death. Jesus gave the Christians in Smyrna your assignment. He said, do not be afraid of the sufferings that are coming upon you. So not only that he says, I see your sufferings, but he says, a whole lot more is coming. And then it could have been kept silent after the motto, I'd rather never say it. He says, no, give the row of wines. I said, do not be afraid of the sufferings that are coming upon you. I listened to an old blind man who spoke about this Bible verse and who told about how he became blind. And in this phase, where the eyesight gradually diminished, until 100 percent blindness, he said, he had been so afraid of becoming blind. And then he was also depressed about it for half a year, when he was blind. And today he said, he would not have been so afraid of being blind. He has had such a profound experience of God in his blindness, that his child, his faith today is more childlike than back then, when he was 20 years old and could see well. With that he wishes blindness on no one, but he said, do not be so afraid of what you must suffer. Even though becoming blind is something different from what Jesus was talking about here. But do not be afraid of the sufferings that are coming upon you. That is impossible for us humans, when we let ourselves be controlled by our human nature. For then we will inevitably, then we will inevitably be run over by our worries and fears. I just came across a sentence from Romans 8 this week, it says, if you let yourself be determined by your human nature, that leads to death. But if the Holy Spirit determines you, that means life and peace. If the Holy Spirit controls you, if he is allowed to control you, is allowed to determine you, that means life and peace. And the question is, do you have life and peace? Does your life with Jesus feel like life? And is this peace in you that shapes you? And if that is not the case, God does not hold it against you. But he shows you, he asks you, so, Holy Spirit, where am I not letting you work in my life right now? Where am I trying to fight and rule and do and make on my own? Where am I not letting you work right now, so that your life and your peace is not experiential for me? Jesus then says to the Christians in Smyrna, you will be persecuted for ten days. And that is good news. It sounds bitter to us at first, but it is good news, for the sufferings are limited. Jesus says exactly ten days and no longer. Yes, there will be a lot, but it will be over. It is limited, a maximum of ten days. And the devil will try to turn you away from Jesus Christ. Back then it was prisons that one barely survived, because they were not air-conditioned like today with three meals a day, but places where one actually died. And today there are many temptations that want to take you captive, that want to make you turn away from Jesus. The devil will try it, but it is limited to ten days. And Jesus says that he is watching that it does not exceed your strength. It is written in the New Testament, God is faithful, he will not let the trial become so strong that you can no longer withstand it. When you are tested, he will also provide an exit for you, so that you can stand firm. If you are tested by the devil, Jesus has already opened the door through which you can flee. And if you only fall into temptations, you have overlooked the door that Jesus has opened for you. And if you fall into temptation, you must never stay down. It is not God who stands before you with an outstretched index finger accusing you. He raises you up, encourages you, draws you to his heart. But that
Know that whenever the devil tempts you, the door is wide open to flee. The time of suffering is measured and limited. There are no promises in the Bible that we will go through life as Sunny Boys or Sunny Girls. But there are many promises that Jesus Christ is with us. So stay with Jesus. In June I was at the funeral of the old man who, in the four years of my studies, prayed a lot for me and encouraged me and also made me happy with his whole being and speech and yodeling. He lived on our university campus. A sentence he always had on his lips was: stay with Jesus. No farewell without: stay with Jesus. And that meant the same resistance that Jesus told the Christians in Minas. Remain faithful until death, then I will give you the victory crown of eternal life. Remain faithful until death. Faithful until death, that sounds a bit like the motto or definition of extremism, but an extremist or a fundamentalist is someone who is willing to die in the fight against those who think differently. Being a Christian is not extremism, is not fundamentalism, and Christianity is not militant at all. Even though, especially in the election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt, the Left Party has loudly proclaimed that action must be taken against fundamentalist Christians. Extremists say, I will fight and am ready to kill others, even if I myself go down. Christians say, I will trust God and speak about him, even if I am killed for it. A friend tells me that after a youth service a student came up to him, and the student told him that he is the only Christian in the school class. And he also told him that because of that he sometimes has to put up with quite a bit there. And his question was naturally then, what he can do in his situation. I wondered what I would have answered him there. My friend answered with exactly this sentence from Jesus, who said, remain faithful until death. Then I will give you the victory crown of eternal life. Remain faithful, stay with Jesus, don't keep your mouth shut, keep cheerfully testifying about Jesus, invite the people around you to Jesus, and if you get one on the head, stay with Jesus. Don't do crooked things, even if your clique or your school class tries to tempt you to do so. Stay with Jesus. Don't do crooked things, even if your boss tries to tempt you and says, just do it, come on, stay with Jesus. And if your boss then says one day that he can't use you, then find yourself another job, but stay with Jesus. If you get kicked out of your clique at your school, go out, but stay with Jesus. Two years ago we baptized a young girl who experienced that and says, okay, after that she was lonely, but she had such a deep experience that God cares about her. It is not worth belonging to that and being unfaithful to Jesus for it. Stay with Jesus. And not knowing, just going along with everything, that is why death always somehow hovers over the Christians in Minas. And probably that is why Jesus said to them lastly, whoever is victorious, the second death will have no power over him. Second death, that sounds a bit strange, right? In the Bible, death does not simply mean the end, but death means separation. At your first death you will be separated from your present body. And then the Bible says, whoever receives a resurrection body. Let's see what you will look like. At your second death, I hope you don't experience it. At the second death is the eternal separation from God, the Bible says. The final separation of a person from God, from everything that is love, that means joy and peace. And Jesus says to his followers with that, yes, you are now looking death in the face, but that is only the first death. Do not be afraid. The second death can do you no harm. For you will always be with me, so stay with Jesus.
to stay with it. Hey, that's what I want, that's what I want to do together with you. But I know, one thing, that takes strength. That takes strength that we don't simply have, from ourselves. But that is exactly why Jesus did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and of sound mind. And we need that. And because we have it, it is possible. So faithful and so loving and so resolute, to stay with Jesus. So, then, let's go. I pray. Jesus, I thank you that you presented yourself to your children back then in Smyrna, the way they needed you. As the one who speaks the final word in every situation and as the one who was dead and from the dead has taken all power. And I thank you that you are for us all that we will ever need. And I pray for everyone who right now in these days needs a reminder of who you are. And I ask you that you make words from yourself alive for them and send people their way who will remind them. Who you are, precisely in their life situation, so that they stand firm and stay with you. And I thank you that you are right in the middle of it, where we are on our way. And you see, our danger, of making compromising compromises, of simply going along, in order to belong. And

Jesus herrscht in Ewigkeit. Alles vergeht, Jesus bleibt. Also egal wo du grad durchgehst, es vergeht. In deiner Situation? Und was sagt Jesus dazu? Du könntest doch was ändern. Also bleib an Jesus dran. Keine Verabschiedung ohne, bleib an Jesus dran. Bleib an Jesus dran. Bleib an Jesus dran.
