True freedom does not consist in overcoming or disregarding causality, but in becoming capable of action within conditions through insight and the purification of thought, without placing oneself above them.

He does not disregard causality. Scarcely had the old man heard these words when he was enlightened.

The text deals with a Zen kōan about a fox who was reborn as a fox for 500 lifetimes because he answered 'no' to the question of whether an enlightened being falls under causality. The central thesis is that liberated people are indeed not slaves to circumstances, but they must not disregard causality either. The speaker explains that inner freedom arises through penetrating one's own thinking, without placing oneself above the conditions. As a present-day reference, everyday examples such as images of the enemy, separations, and the purification of language and thought are cited. The text refers to Buddhist stages of karma and the significance of meditation and insight. It is emphasized that freedom lies within conditions, not above them. The speaker uses the kōan to clarify the balance between inner liberation and the acceptance of reality.

Sen, the podcast of Chukka Sangha. Iho san si si si va si sunbu sam ko sa ko ja ho romi. I wanted to take up the koan in Umumonka Number 2 today, and that is Yakujo's Fox. Interestingly, although this koan stands in second place, it is only taken up almost at the very end in the koan practice. So, the Roshi had that skipped over for all of us back then, and that is because the koan was so important to him and because he thought it was good that we already had some practice in resolving koans, in order to work with this koan. I'll read it out. When Yakujo Osho held a series of certain lectures, an old man always followed the monks into the main hall and listened to him. When the monks left the hall, the old man left as well. One day, however, he stayed behind, and Yakujo asked him, who are you, standing before me? The old man replied, I am not a human being. In the days of Kasiapabula I was the first monk and lived here on this mountain. One day a student asked me, does an enlightened person fall under the law of cause and effect? I answered, no, he does not fall under it. From that moment I was condemned to endure 500 lives as a fox. I ask you now to speak the words of transformation and free me from my life as a fox. Tell me, does an enlightened person fall under the yoke of causality or not? He does not disregard causality. As soon as the old man heard these words, he was enlightened. Bowing several times, he said, I am freed from my life as a fox. I will remain on this mountain. I am so free to ask you, will you please bury my body as that of a dead monk? Jacorio had the first monk ring the bell and inform everyone that after lunch a cremation with a dead monk would take place. The monks were puzzled about this. Everyone is in good health, no one is in the sickroom. What does this mean? After the meal, Jacorio led the monks to the foot of a rock on the other side of the mountain, poked out the dead body of a fox with his staff, and held the cremation ceremony. That evening he climbed onto the lectern and told the monks the whole story. Thereupon Oberkuh asked him. The old man had given the wrong answer and was condemned to experience 500 rebirths as a fox. Suppose he had given the right answer. What would have happened to him? Jacorio said, come here to me, I'll tell you. Oberkuh went to Jacorio and gave him a slap. Jacorio clapped his hands, laughed, and called out. I thought the barbarian would have a red beard, but now I see a red-bearded barbarian standing right before me. Momen and comment, not falling under causality. Why is the monk turned into a fox because of that? Not disregarding causality, how can that free the old man? If you understand that, then you will know that the old Jacorio would have happily experienced 500 rebirths as a fox. And his Fers, not falling under it, not disregarding it. Two sides of a coin, not disregarding, not falling under it. A thousand errors, millions of mistakes. Well, you can sit down comfortably. Why is this koan so important for us? It is important because it has the theme of freedom within conditions. We can have different attitudes regarding the world of conditions. We can think, yes, we are victims of the circumstances that surround us. We can do nothing, one has to get through it. But we can also look at the world of conditions, like for example Meisterin Seil. She says, be master or mistress of all circumstances at all times. We can also be masters and mistresses, or people who can deal with circumstances. We do not have to let ourselves be determined by the circumstances. We can determine the circumstances. How do we do that? That is the question, yes? In this koan it is reported about this monk who already lived during the time of the penultimate historical Buddha, Kasyapa. So he preceded Shakyamuni. When, we do not know, it has not been passed down. At that time there was this monk who, when asked whether an enlightened person falls under the law of cause and effect, that is, under the yoke of causality, answered: No, he does not fall under it. So it is not correct after all, what Rinseida says. Lord of all circumstances, in every moment, we know precisely that when one gradually penetrates things with one's insight, that one thereby attains an inner freedom that gives us possibilities of action that we had not previously considered possible. And therefore there is something right about that sentence, yes? He does not fall under it. So he is not a slave of the conditions, a slave of the circumstances, but everything that he penetrates helps him to gain a scope of action and freedom that he had not seen before. If we regard a person as our enemy, then we have hardly any possibilities to escape this circumstance. We flee from him, we adapt to him, we become violent toward him. But what we could really do, namely change our thinking about this person and suddenly realize that even one such as I, he too has the Buddha-nature. He suffers when he behaves the way he behaves toward me. I can meet him with my compassion. There is a possibility to heal our relationship. If I think this way, then I can actually change these circumstances that have determined our relationship until now. You notice it when you have separated from a long-term partner. And it was in discord. Then you see how this thinking, he wanted to financially overwhelm me or whatever the points of contention were. How that holds us back. And how we do not have the freedom to be entirely normal and unreserved with this person. But if we look deeply, develop deep understanding, then we can suddenly see something different in that person than this terrifying figure that he has played in our inner chamber until now. And that is a great liberation. And in that sense, awakening per se already has a liberating effect. We distinguish in Buddhism various karmic levels. So there is the level of action, there is the level of speech, and there is the level of thought. And according to Buddhist understanding, the most effective level is that of thought. That is why it is also so helpful to purify one's own thinking. Then it is important also to purify the language. And ultimately it is of course also important to purify our impulses to act. The Buddha used six years to purify his language. He was trained as a future statesman and let us say that at that time there were no law students yet, but in approximately that direction his thinking was shaped. How does one deal with enemies and so on and so forth. The Buddha had to practice for six years to develop a language that can serve liberation and the propagation of the Dharma. And that is a certain effort that is demanded of us. We must separate ourselves from our usual everyday language infected with enemy images. Then our thinking has different consequences than if we do not do that. And therefore it is totally sensible to practice Buddha language and to listen with Buddha ears. That can only serve us and create more freedom for us than if we do not purify it. So does he fall under it or not? And this monk said no, he does not fall under it, because he has made the experience of how thinking can be liberated. How he was able to attain freedom in the world of conditions. That is a great freedom that we thereby attain and we are then creative in a way that we had not previously considered possible. If we can transcend these circumstances that had previously held us captive. That is a great freedom that is gifted to us by examining our thinking and freeing ourselves from burdensome thoughts. If we can free ourselves from thinking, from everyday thinking, and transform thinking energy into observation energy. That is a great step we can take. Yes, so that helps us, and there is something right about the idea that the liberated mind no longer falls under the yoke of cause and effect. And yet this statement was somehow incomplete. And this consequence that occurred, 500 lives as a fox. That is of course an image, yes. Fox stands in Zen for the cunning false, the sly, crafty false thinking. So when we speak of Fox Zen, those are people who pretend to practice seriously, but in reality they make fun of the content of the Buddha's teachings. Or they caricature them. That is Fox Zen, and it is generally rejected. And if this person was reborn 500 times as a fox, he must go through this fox-like thinking 500 times, in order to penetrate the consequences of it so thoroughly that he can let it go. That he can truly return to the original. Yes, and now he comes to Yakuya and asks him to speak the words of transformation. Obviously, some people can direct words of transformation at us. Most of the time these words of transformation are rather intuitive. They are not carefully crafted answers, but spontaneous. And he asked him, Yakuya, can you tell me the words of transformation to free me from this cycle? And Yakuya says, in response to the question, does an enlightened person fall under the yoke of causality or not. He does not disregard causality. That is of course an important point, even if we can free ourselves from thought patterns and structures through meditative practice. And thereby also appear less predictable to our environment, so that a kind of freedom can be perceived there. It is important that we do not now think that we are becoming godlike here and everything dances to our tune. Some gurus have such hybrid ideas about themselves, they have themselves walled in and are found dead after 14 days in the cave, where they had previously said, I will survive this. I don't need air to breathe. It has already happened. So that is where it ends. And a great teacher of humanity was Sai Baba with 50 million followers worldwide. And I believe in 2004 or so, in April, someone attempted an assassination on him. So someone came with a pistol into his ashram and shot at him, but his bodyguard threw himself in front of Sai Baba and then received the fatal shot. Sai Baba survived, but it was clear that if the bodyguard had not been there, he would have died at that time. Or Gandhi, also a great teacher of humanity, yes, an assassination was carried out on him and with the words "Oh, Rama" he died. There were a total of three assassination attempts on the Buddha and he survived all three, because he so to speak made use of the circumstances. Once a maddened elephant was set upon him, in a gateway, where one actually had to assume that this elephant would kill the Buddha. The Buddha brought his full compassion to this elephant, stroked his trunk and calmed him so that he could feel at ease again. Another time a stone was rolled at him and he was still in the process of it. Or another time two people came with the intention of killing him. And the Buddha said, you know what, you are in great danger, if you kill me, then on the way back you will probably be killed yourselves, so that the traces of this misfortune are erased. Let us do it this way, you go in safety and I remain in safety. And that was it. So the Buddha acted resourcefully in these dangerous situations, but he was also aware that if they now drew the knife and that in my chest, then it was that. Or Angulimala, who still needed one more finger to complete his thousand-fingered garland. And the Buddha encountered him, and there too the Buddha found a way to prevent Angulimala from killing him as his last victim. So we can move through these situations with presence of mind armed with compassion, then we have a certain chance. But we cannot place ourselves above the law of causality. It works. We are also subject to it. When the Buddha was given poisoned pork meat at the end of his life, he was able to preserve his Sangha, but he ate it, because that was in keeping with the propriety of the time, and then became seriously ill. So even an enlightened one who somehow becomes ill takes care of his illness and of the circumstances that make one ill. He is not exempt in the sense that some people believe about themselves. And nothing more can happen to us. No, then you stopped at question 1 and haven't yet grasped the addition. So he does not disregard causality. That is to say, these two levels belong together, not falling beneath them, but also not disregarding causality. These are the two vehicles to liberation. So on the one hand, clarifying our thinking, becoming free, becoming capable of action, but on the other hand, remaining aware of the interconnection of conditions and also being familiar with the world of conditions. So that then liberated that monk, and now comes this interesting scene, where he says, can you have my body cremated in the proper ceremony and so on. And that is what Jacujo says to this, and indeed the monks are fetched and the ceremony is prepared. Jacujo brings out a dead fox's body near a rock. And everyone wonders, where does this dead fox actually come from? And one wonders that too as a student of the Quran. Where does this dead fox suddenly come from? Was it really the case that he was reborn there as a fox for eternity? Isn't it all fiction and so on? And scientifically, what is this about? And now there suddenly lies a dead fox. What is this about? Yes, these why-questions are often not very fruitful for the usual. He simply illuminates, and for us, human beings, it is just as mysterious as for others. But we have the openness to accept the mysterious nature of great life and to invite it into our life, to deal with it. I mean, we plant dozens of things in the garden here and so on. And it is somehow mysterious what of it comes to fruition and what of it takes root and which seed does not take root. And who wants to know that beforehand? Yes, so we constantly place ourselves in these mysterious workings of the universe. We deal with these mysteries, and quite apart from the fact that we as humanity have a hybrid notion. We might one day be able to explain the universe, the physicists have been working for 100 years on the theory of everything, to finally be able to explain everything that goes on in the cosmos. Yes, we have to tell them, people, you are conducting your investigations on the basis of 4% visible or somehow perceivable form of matter. But 96% is dark matter, one cannot look into it at all. And it naturally has an effect. What do you imagine being able to say with 4% that this is how the universe works? Well, and we can say that to ourselves too. There are many mysterious workings. When I think of the German reunification and the end of the Cold War by Gorbachev, I often have the impression that what happened there was a pure miracle. I studied in Berlin, West Berlin, at the Otto Suhr Institute, hundreds of social scientists, with hundreds of theories about the end of the East-West conflict. And no one foresaw that step. I of course not either, I was just in Japan when it happened. And the Roshi came running toward me. On the day of the Wall opening, I of course had not noticed and said to myself, Congratulations! And I thought he meant my state of mind. But he explained it right away. The Wall has a hole. The Berlin Wall has a hole. Congratulations! Yes, no one had foreseen it. And it happened, mysteriously. And so we can also approach the very great questions of life with this openness to the mysterious solution. We see these insane wars there in Ukraine, in the Gaza Strip, in Lebanon. Yes, a member of our Sanger has a mother from Ukraine, a father from Lebanon. In both countries she has somehow been at home, alia. And now she has to experience how the place where the father was born and was at home, how that place was leveled to the ground. All childhood memories destroyed in the hail of bombs. What does that do to our heart? Do we then perhaps clench our fist inwardly and say, we will pay you back for this? Or can we actually come to terms with such a sedative? With feeling and deep understanding is the recipe here? No. We are simply upset. We are truly deeply affected by this happening, but that is not the right word. We are truly deeply shocked, desperate by it. In this situation, to now work oneself out of one's own thinking patterns and to transcenter them, that is an almost superhuman task. And yet it is what can actually only prepare the way to peace. Only if we truly see, wars, war actions considered in the larger context, perhaps contribute to healing the human family. But only if we open the way there, mentally. We are surrounded by newspapers and media that do exactly the opposite. That constantly provide new enemy image information from sensation and make us clear, arm, rearm, become war-capable, war-ready. It is exactly the wrong melody. There leads nothing out of the causal connection. But they would also have the possibility to report on the human in other people, the affectedness of others, they could prepare understanding. They could also speak up for peace. Security does not sell so well. And therefore, at some point there was briefly talk of negotiations regarding Iran. What was the consequence? The arms stocks plummeted. The arms stocks plummeted. And in our economic world, it is reported on the Deutschlandfunk, yes, so the growth assumptions of our government, had to be corrected downward. But there is a certain glimmer of hope. The arms stocks, the investment in the destruction industry, that still creates a certain growth. Can we very easily make ourselves a victim and say, we live in a system that does not pave any way toward peace. With these convictions we flatten peace from the outset. And therefore it is so important to remember that we with thinking before speaking and before acting already have the most important tool in hand to change the causal consequences. In Buddhism we speak of Cetana. Cetana are the intentions behind our thinking. And it is said, these are the decisive factors. Cetana, therefore Cetana, look at your Cetana, what intentions do you have? And then we can under certain circumstances examine, correct, change our intentions. So with Cetana we could pave the way for the mystery. I have also in the Lebensgarten made the experience that thinking in the direction of the often healing, that it has an enormous effect. When we this, this legacy of the Second World War, which the Lebensgarten originally represents, when we so to speak in cultural names, our conditions were infinitely negative. So we were in a place where former Nazi thinking was still rooted. We had low-flying aircraft that as soon as the sun rose, thundered over our settlements, so that the small children cried. We had a scrapyard nearby, where the main wind direction from the southwest always carried this smell of corpses, of dead animals, over the Life Garden. We had a federal collection center for weakly radioactive waste behind the January splitter. We had a cluster bomb factory in the plant. We had atomic bombs on the grounds of the former munitions works. We had atomic missiles on the site of today's Steierberg holiday park. That is where the launch ramps were stationed for so-called Onnes-John missiles. Onnes-John, we will flatten you, once and for all. Honestly, we are making a false move and we will send them to you. So, those were in Steierberg. And all these things have disappeared, these circumstances. But what, in my conviction, contributed the most was bringing a perspective of healing into our way of life, manifesting that at every step, transforming the old war site into a place of healing. And we can probably do that on the level of world politics too. We don't dare to claim that for ourselves. And we don't dare to claim that for ourselves because we don't know by what means that will be realized. When I meditated on all these evil circumstances in the time of the founding of the Life Garden, I also didn't know how it would happen that these things would be replaced by what is healing. But I definitely maintained this vision. And that is the beaut

Was bedeutet das? Was wäre ihm passiert? Also der ging Shakyamuni voraus. Wo kommt dieser tote Fuchs da plötzlich her? Was soll das?
