Conflicts can be resolved when one observes the concrete event, recognises one's own feelings and needs, and formulates a concrete request, without labelling or judging the other person.

Communication actually begins with the person themselves. We have a communication with ourselves. When we wake up in the morning, the person we first come into contact with is actually ourselves again.

The text introduces nonviolent communication (NVC) according to Marshall Rosenberg and explains its origins in the 1960s in the USA against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. Rosenberg developed an approach that is based on observation, feelings, needs, and concrete requests in order to resolve conflicts without labelling or judgement. The speaker describes the four basic points: self-observation, naming feelings, recognising needs, and formulating concrete requests. As an example, a situation involving a friend who is late is used to illustrate the difference between labelling and factual description. The text emphasises that communication first begins with oneself and that a more compassionate inner attitude is a prerequisite. NVC is presented as a practical tool that has been gaining importance in Turkey since the 2000s and is applied in various areas of society.

Dear Doctor İnan Özdemir Taştan, welcome. >> Thank you. >> Today we would like to have a conversation with you about nonviolent communication, but before we get to that topic, could we briefly get to know you? >> Yes, yes. Of course. Well, I came to Berlin five years ago. Well, from 2000 to 2016, I worked as an academic in the Department of Public Relations at the Faculty of Communication Studies at Ankara University. Well, after being dismissed by a presidential decree, I came to Berlin with a postdoctoral research project and have been here for five years. Well, I conduct my research at the Forum Transregional Studies Institute. I also spent a period at the Comparative Democracy Research Unit at Humboldt University. Well, in general, I actually have works on rhetoric, political communication, social movements, and women and media. Well, today, at your invitation, we held a workshop on nonviolent communication here. It was a very enjoyable workshop. Thank you again for your invitation. >> We thank you for coming. So then, let us begin our conversation with your field, nonviolent communication. Well, what does this mean? What does nonviolent communication mean? In which areas do we use it? What does it signify? Could you elaborate? >> Of course. Nonviolent communication is actually a field of study. It was first developed in the 1960s in America by a psychiatrist named Marshall Rosenberg. Well, the basic concern of that period was this. If we think of the world and America of the 1960s, the Black movement, Black people were in a state of uprising. The civil rights movement in America was very strong. America’s war with Vietnam was ongoing, and there was actually a social opposition emerging there as well. Many soldiers were experiencing war trauma and returning. There was such unrest in society. Also, the conflict situation brought about by the Cold War was actually affecting the entire world in some way. In such a period, Rosenberg started from the question of how we can resolve our conflicts, first with ourselves, then with our surroundings, and socially? How can we understand each other, and how can we create a roadmap for this? And his basic concern was to better understand each other in areas where we do not agree and to engage in issue-focused communication. That is, believing that we can solve problems more easily by knowing how we feel, knowing ourselves, putting ourselves in the other person’s place to some extent, and analyzing the situation, without judging or labeling each other, he actually offers a roadmap for this. Well, this is such a perspective. Then this approach became widespread. In the 1980s, an association was formed in America. It spread to other countries as well, and today, nonviolent communication has actually become a field with an association that offers international certified training. And in Turkey, after the 2000s, in the early 2000s, this field began to be known. The first book was translated into Turkish in 2004, as you know, in Turkey, in the Middle East, a region where there have always been conflicts. We also have conflicts within ourselves. In different areas, such as the field of gender, religion and belief, cultural, and racial fields, we are actually a society with conflicts, as is every society, and this field has attracted interest in Turkey. Because we have acute problems. We wondered whether nonviolent communication could be a way to cope with these problems. It has been a developing field in Turkey since the early 2000s. There is also a nonviolent communication association in Turkey. They also translate books and provide training. This course has begun to become part of the curriculum in communication faculties. It is actually such a field. >> Yes. Now, actually, it is a good thing, especially perhaps that it has found life in Turkey as well. Because, as you know, conflicts can be more intense in that sense among us. That is, >> violent communication is more in the foreground. >> Does it have a method? That is, how do people do this in that sense? Is it applied? Do you receive training? Or to bring about such a change in societies, that is, in the simplest terms, on a micro level, we can say it is between partners, right? That is, when communication between husband and wife is not expressed in a healthy way, when one does not understand the other well, what happens? They can immediately resort to violence, and this can lead to a multitude of negative consequences. In this sense, is this method also applied in practice? Is there such a method? Yes, there is. The founder of this field actually presents a ten-step roadmap. But in essence, there are four points. First, let us correct our communication with ourselves. We also judge ourselves very harshly, don't we? "I failed again." "You are always lazy." "You are always late." "You do not deserve anything." We actually have a cruelty directed at ourselves. And we can form an internal communication by repeating judgments and prejudices about ourselves without fully analyzing what we think or what we feel. Now, first of all, communication actually begins with the person themselves. We have a communication with ourselves. When we wake up in the morning, the first person we communicate with is actually ourselves again. Let us think about our communication with ourselves. He says this. That is, a kind of self-reflection. When an event occurs, what did I feel? What did this make me feel? What would make me feel better? Why did I feel this? For example, when there is marital conflict, why do I get so angry? Or when someone does not do what I said, when the child does not do what I told them, why do I get angry? Let us first think about ourselves a bit more. Of course, this is not something like changing everything from one day to the next. This is a process, but the process actually begins with the person examining their communication with themselves a little more and reflecting on the communication they establish with themselves. It begins with a more compassionate, more understanding communication with ourselves. That is, what did I experience, what did I feel, why did I feel this way? Why does this person's attitude drive me crazy? Why? That is, before labeling them as someone very annoying, why am I angry? For example, others might not get angry. Why does it touch my blood? What am I feeling there? Let us think about ourselves a bit more, listen to ourselves more. It actually begins like this. Then there are four basic points. Nonviolent Communication says this: when we experience a difficult or conflictual situation, first let us observe, let us stop for a moment. You know, this kind of thing happens. You say something, the other party says something. You raise your voice, they raise theirs. And this tension escalates and escalates, and it can lead to a place where words run out. First, let us stop. That is, instead of reacting impulsively, let us observe. What is the concrete event that is straining me in this communication or in this situation? Really think about the concrete event. For example, you agreed with your friend, and for the third time, they are 15 minutes late, and you have been waiting for 15 minutes. Now, what happened? They were late, and not just today, they were late this time as well. Concrete event. You made the observation. Then think about this: "This person is a typical liar. They always deceive people, they are untrustworthy." Put aside labeling the other party. Focus on yourself. What did you feel? It could also be that you have such a relationship and it does not bother you. That is, perhaps you would not have such a problem. In the meantime, while I was waiting, I might have been on the phone with two friends. This might not have upset me, but it did upset me. So why? What am I feeling? For example, if someone else did this, would I feel the same way? Do I feel this way because this person, this friend, did this? Perhaps if they did those things, I would not get so angry. So why this friend? Do I perhaps have other disappointments regarding that friend? Or in addition to this, in addition to the lateness, for example, did they choose to do an activity with others another day, and I only found out about it later? That is, actually, in the relationship and in that concrete situation, what happened, and what did I feel, and why might I have felt it? That is, actually, normally Let us suppose that someone arrives late for the first time. Normally, I would not react this much. Why am I so angry now? Is there a general anger regarding my current state? Or has this person done other wrong things to me, and it accumulated, and this became the last straw? So, let us feel this a bit and ask why I am angry? What else could I have felt instead of being angry? Or am I only angry? Do I also have other resentments towards them? So, let us observe concretely. What did this make me feel? Let us understand this. Then, what can we do now? If we do not open up this problem to the other person, that is, if we remain silent. What can we do in such a situation? We can again take it in stride. But this leads to accumulation. Is it not so? Once we took it in stride, then again, and then another thing. If I will see this person frequently and this bothered me, then staying silent, silent, silent, and then exploding is not a good thing. Nonviolent Communication actually says this. Know your own boundaries. Stand up for them. Stand up for your own rights, but also express this boundary to the other person without blaming them. What could you say, for example? Instead of saying, "You were late again. You are always late. You always do this to me," describe what happened. Look, today I waited for you for 15 minutes, the weather was cold. I got very cold. And this is not the first time. It had happened before, and this leads to such and such feelings in me. So, when we ask why it happened, that is, when we say why it happened like this, actually, because we are discussing the concrete event without labeling the other person, they also enter into communication with us about that event. And it says this. You observed the concrete event. You understood what it made you feel. You did not label the other person. You reasoned about what might have been the cause on the other person's side. What might have happened? And make a concrete request. This should be like this. What do we want from the other person? Say what you want, actually without twisting it, without labeling the other person, and without presenting it to them like a command. I would be very happy if it does not happen like this next time. Or I would be very happy if you inform me in advance. >> Mm-hm. Let us suppose that our child, our adolescent child, said they would come home. They did not come. They arrived an hour and a half late, and you were very worried. You are so angry and worried that as soon as they arrive, hey, now they are here. You are waiting, as soon as they enter, with great anxiety, you say, "Stop." First, observe with your eyes what happened. Then, instead of labeling the other person with things like "you are not trustworthy" or "whenever we do this, we end up in the same place," and generalizations, say how you feel. Then make a concrete request, but this should not be a command. So, actually, when you apply these rules, the Nonviolent Communication literature says to us that a more agreement-oriented communication space is formed, one that opens up to each other, does not close off, does not build walls, does not give commands, and where we can meet with the other party at some point. And we can actually move to solve our problems in this way. We may not be able to solve them. So, this is not a garden of roses. So, sometimes there are points where we may not be able to agree on a matter. But disagreement does not mean violence. So, you are asking me for this and you are telling me what this situation makes you feel, but let us suppose that I cannot do this. So, let us suppose that I cannot move to this city with you. >> Mm-hm. Well, because of these reasons, then everyone knows their own boundaries and can make a decision. Well, therefore, it is not that everything must be solved. It is not that we must constantly have empathy for the other person and do what they want. Nonviolent Communication. On the contrary, >> stand up for your own rights. Know your boundaries. Tell the other person this as well. But when you say it, also respect their boundary. So, when you do this to me all the time, you are not a man. You are not a woman. For example, between spouses, when we say "there is no mother like you, there is no father like you," we are entering the other person's boundary and judging them. Whereas we could say this. Look, we experienced such and such a thing. When this happens, I feel like this. Why? What can we do? Then the other person is forced to say something. So, because we are discussing what happened, that is, next time with the children, like this, like this... I don’t want you to do it, or I want you to treat me this way. Well, when it comes to this, my boundary is concrete and problem-focused. I want this from you; I feel this way. What do you think? >> Yes. So, how can we find the answer to that? I mean, as you said, for example, when something you wanted is not done, you get angry. Why do you get angry? Or, well, you get angry at a friend, but why do you get angry? Can we find the answer to that? In other words, can we find the answer to why we experience these feelings, why we are experiencing them? Well, of course, this is a thinking process. We think to ourselves. Why do I feel this way? You might say that the answer you find may not be clinically correct. This is actually just a form of self-reflection. The more self-reflective we are in our communication with ourselves—thinking about why I feel this, why I do that—the more this will develop for the other party as well, after a while. That is, I am constantly experiencing something like this. Why might they be doing this? What might they be thinking? What might they be feeling? Of course, we may not be able to find out 100%. Or we could say it this way. Actually, when my friend goes out with their friends, for example, I call five times. Am I calling because I am worried about them, because I am anxious about them? At first, I think that is the case, perhaps. Or do I actually have a need for control? Or is it a fear of losing them? So, we also reflect on ourselves. Perhaps at first we will say, I am only worried about my child. Then we might realize: Yes, I am worried about my child, but at the same time, is the fact that they are slipping away from me, that they are establishing their own life, that they are actually becoming independent and distancing themselves from me, also causing anxiety in me? >> Am I perhaps unwilling to accept that they are growing up? >> Or >> Am I afraid that my spouse has a social life outside of me? If so, why am I afraid of that, for example? Of what exactly? Do I have a trust issue? If I have this trust issue, which elements in this relationship might it stem from? Or is it related to my general insecurity? If it stems from certain factors in the relationship related to my general insecurity, should I work on that? I am generally insecure. Am I perhaps an insecure person? What can I do about this? Actually, this is a long and broad process, but here >> the important thing is this. Instead of reacting quickly within that flow, judging, getting angry, expressing very angry emotions, and placing the other party in a certain position, we should pause, focus on what is happening, ponder what this situation makes us feel and why it might be making us feel that way, consider the other party, be able to empathize, and express what I want, but not in the form of "do this, do that." Can the other party really say no? Let’s say, from now on, I want you to come home at this time. Can you do that? Now, when the other party says no, I need to not take this as a major attack. Because they are also a person. They also have needs. Why do you think this does not suit you? Perhaps then the child will say, because as soon as I get out of school, I don’t have the opportunity to socialize with my friends. They meet up, for example, and do this. Then look, I have received information from the other party. Oh, is that so? Where do they do it? Where is that place? Is it a safe place? Look, a space opens up. And we can talk about that space. Then we can say, oh, my child, yes, but for example, I don’t know how safe that place is. I need to take a look. Stay there for a day or two like this. Let me investigate. Can we talk afterwards? So, it is actually about accepting that the other person can also make decisions regarding their own life, accepting that we are equals. Accepting that they too can have a reason, a need. But this also actually begins with the communication we establish with ourselves. That is, when we relate to ourselves in this way, as they say, a person knows the truth from themselves. Then, for them... Then I start to think a bit. Well, thus a space opens up, and look, new topics to talk about. Perhaps the other person will say something we never thought of, and we will be shocked. You had never thought of that. Then, upon that, and thus communication, conversation, opening up to each other will continue, instead of closing off. Therefore, the moment I close off, the moment we close off, violence actually comes into play. And a bond of trust will form between us. When I say something, they hear me. When they say something, I listen. I may or may not do it, but if I do not do it, I can explain why I do not do it. They also do not return to me with anger. Perhaps another suggestion may come, like what we can do. Or when they renounce something, I say, but they also did that. Then I will do this. That is, instead of closing off, labeling, judging, pointing, giving orders, instead understanding, feeling, empathizing, and opening a channel for communication. This is such a method. >> Dear professor, thank you very much. You joined our program, and you enlightened us >> in the direction of nonviolent communication. Thank you very much. Thank you. I thank you for your invitation.

Eee, dolayısıyla yani illa her şey çözülecek.
