God is rich in forgiveness, and whoever comes to know him in any stage of life and follows him will receive entry into the house of God.

Seek the Lord and call upon him, for our God is rich in forgiveness.

The text is a sermon that draws on the liturgical readings of a Sunday. The central message is that God is rich in forgiveness and that people should turn to him through prayer and confession. The prophet Isaiah and the saint Paul are cited as voices that call for prayer and a life worthy of the Gospel. The parable of the workers in the vineyard is interpreted as a pedagogical example: the vineyard stands for earthly life, and all who come to know Jesus in any stage of life receive the same reward, entry into the house of God. The family is presented as the domestic church, in which one comes to know God and prays. A special greeting is given to a pilgrimage group that works for the family in accordance with the teachings of John Paul II. The text concludes with a prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, asking for help to follow the Son Jesus and to realize the civilization of love in Mexico.

"Seek the Lord and call upon him, for our God is rich in forgiveness." In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah invites us to pray because God is understanding and merciful. "Seek the Lord… call upon him… our God is rich in forgiveness." When these two moments of life come together: realizing that I have made a mistake, and then confessing my mistake directed to God, we must always have the certainty of his forgiveness, because he is understanding and merciful. That is why in the psalm we heard: "The Lord… is not far from those who seek him… and from the one who calls upon him." That is to say, he is always near us. That is why we must call upon him, we must pray, because we have him always near, he is at our side to help us in whatever we may need. In the same way, in the second reading, Saint Paul invites us to have a conduct in accordance with the teachings of Jesus: "Brothers… live a life worthy of the Gospel." If we are aware that Jesus is walking with us, at our side to help us, it is very easy to fulfill what Saint Paul indicates to us: to live a life worthy of the Gospel, in accordance with the teachings of Jesus. The invocation to God must be with the intention of living in accordance with his teachings. And that is why, in the acclamation before the Gospel, we heard: "Open, Lord, our hearts, so that we may understand the words of your Son." The words of Jesus are words full of mercy. Also in the Gospel, in the parable, in the same key, we can interpret it. It effectively presents a pedagogical parable, that is to say, one that instructs us, teaches us, indicates to us the way to conduct ourselves. The vineyard, according to this parable, is the earthly life of humanity. It is our journey through this world and we, at some moment or stage of our life, accept the invitation to make known Jesus and his teachings. Some of us have done so since childhood. Here I take the opportunity as a parenthesis that I am very pleased to receive this pilgrimage that works in favor of the family according to the teachings of Saint John Paul II. Because the family is constituted by God to be image and likeness of him: man, woman, and the children. That is why the family must then be a domestic church. That is where we should all always learn to direct ourselves to God, to pray. That is why I say, some of us have done so since childhood in the family, others in youth, with the movements it helps, it facilitates that the young people, who could not receive it in childhood, do so in youth, others already as adults and others even in old age. According to the parable, some were invited to work in the vineyard of the Lord early, others at mid-morning, others at noon, others at sunset. However, all received the same pay, a denarius. That is to say, we will all receive the pay, having known Jesus at any moment of our life, and following him, we will obtain a denarius, that is to say, the entrance to the house of God the Father, to dwell in it for all eternity. Let us also ask our mother Mary that we continue to be faithful disciples of her son Jesus, so that we may receive at the end of our life the denarius, the entrance to the House of the Father. Let us stand up. Let us open our heart to her, in a brief moment of silence. Our mother Mary of Guadalupe. Remembering that you came to make known "the true God by whom one lives": We ask you to help us to conduct our life in accordance with the teachings of your son Jesus, and to achieve being authentic disciples, understanding and merciful before the needs of our neighbors. Without a doubt, you contemplated the anguish of your beloved son Saint Juan Diego and decided to show him your love and mercy. Help us to trust in your love and to foster fraternity and solidarity in all areas of everyday life, consolidating good and lasting foundations, that make it possible to achieve the civilization of love, in our beloved homeland of Mexico. All the faithful present here this Sunday commend ourselves to you, who shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope, and help us to maintain our trust in your son Jesus in order to receive, at the end of our life, the coin that will allow us to be admitted for all eternity into the house of God the Father. O clement, O merciful, O sweet Virgin Mary of Guadalupe! Amen. The post "Our God is rich in forgiveness": Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes. was first published on Archdiocese of Mexico.
