Biblical leadership consists in carrying others and making them great, and the community is called to acknowledge such leaders with respect and gratitude in order to enable spiritual growth.
Leadership means serving. In other words, the job of a leader is to help someone up, not to push them down, but to make them great.
The text is a sermon on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 and derives from it spiritual principles for church life. The preacher first explains his personal method of Bible study with a three-colour highlighting system and emphasises that the biblical text contains almost exclusively practical exhortations. At the centre is the principle of leadership, which is interpreted as serving leadership on the basis of Matthew 20:25-26. Leadership is understood as the exaltation of others, not as the exercise of power. The preacher illustrates this with a personal anecdote from his time at Bible school, in which he had to submit to a different judgement of his leader. The text calls for treating spiritual leaders with respect and gratitude and for maintaining peace among one another. The sermon is directed at his own congregation and combines biblical exegesis with concrete everyday instructions.

We are almost on the home stretch of our sermon series on developing a robust, firm faith. Next week, Tobi will preach on the fourth chapter of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. The theme there will be the return of Jesus. What is it actually like when Jesus comes again? And today we are looking at the fifth chapter of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians, which Paul wrote. And the sermon theme today is Spiritual Principles for Our Life. Spiritual Principles for Our Life. I still have one tip that I would like to share before we go into such a sermon. I recently noticed again how refreshing it is when I take notes during the sermon and write things down. There is this saying: "Whoever writes, that remains." And there is really something to it. I write when I am here in the service; I take notes in the first sermon. I hear the same sermon again in the second service, which is always a little different, and take notes again. And that really builds something. I get my best ideas for sermons too; they come here during the service in sermons, when I listen to sermons. So I really encourage you, take out your phone. Today there is also a lot to write down, to note, because we are expounding the Word of God, there is a lot of teaching involved. And a second thought. A few years ago I got a study Bible, Encounter for Life, New Life in the Study Bible, we can highly recommend it. And then I wanted to read through it in one year. I needed two years for that. A classic too, Bible in a Year, needing two years for it. And then I finished it. Now I have started a new Bible that I read in the mornings. You even gave it to me as a church gift for my ordination last year, really strong. And then I thought, I need a new highlighting system when I read the Bible. And I came up with a new highlighting system. If you have a better highlighting system, then please explain it to me. Then I want to learn from you. But let me tell you what I do when I read the Bible in the mornings. I have three colors. I have the color yellow. And with that I always mark in the mornings all the to-dos, all the appeals, all the exhortations. Things that we should do as disciples, things that we should leave as disciples. Everything that there is practically to do. Then I have orange. Then I mark everything about the attributes of God. What we learn about God, what I learn about God, how he is, what his will is, what he has in mind, what God speaks, what one can know about God. And then I still have pink. And then I simply mark everything else that I find exciting. It is the all-rounder. Everything else that somehow does not fit into the scheme, I mark with that. And why am I explaining this now before the sermon text that we are going to preach through together today? These are ten verses that are exclusively marked in yellow. The entire Bible text, ten verses long, only yellow. That means the closing of Paul's letter. At the end he throws everything out again. What is important? What is there to do? What can we implement as Christians? A great many spiritual principles. And that is why today is about it. Spiritual principles that make us strong in faith, from which we can learn. And once more briefly on the context. The most important for the sermon, to better understand the Bible text. We are in the Thessalonian letter. There a small congregation came about through revival. Paul with his coworker was there. There was a short revival. A few people were converted. Very fresh Christians. And you have, go to your first steps with Jesus. At the same time, however, it is also the case that directly Paul with his coworkers had to quickly leave the city, because there was persecution. There was an uprising. There was tumult. That is to say, the freshly converted Christians, they did not really have it easy. He was now
It is not a great advantage if you have said, I am a Christian and I live in Thessalonica. But the city is similar to our city. Frankfurt was a bit smaller back then, but it was a trading city, a rich city. Super diverse, super many cultures and also religions. And in that context this letter is written with these tips and these spiritual principles. And we are going to look at those together today. The text is in 1 Thessalonians 5:12 to 22. There Paulus writes toward the end of the letter. Dear friends, we ask you to show respect to those who lead and go ahead of you. They strive for you and warn you about what is wrong. You should thank them for their work with sincere love and keep peace among one another. Brothers and sisters, we urge you to reason with the lazy. Hallelujah from the front row. To reason with the lazy and to encourage the faint-hearted, be gentle with the weak, and be patient with everyone. See to it that no one repays evil with evil, but always strive to do good to one another and to all others. Always be joyful, do not cease to pray. Whatever happens, be thankful, for that is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Holy Spirit, do not despise prophetic utterances, but test everything that is said and hold on to what is good, avoid evil in every form. The entire text is marked in yellow and that is my sermon before the sermon, namely that the Bible, the word of God, the holy scripture, is truly a book that tells us what we should do. If I have questions in my life, how should I decide, in which direction should I go, the word of God is really a lot also written in yellow and we can learn a lot, a lot about how that should look practically in my life. That is my pre-sermon before the sermon. If you really ask yourself, how should I set up my life, how should I make a decision, the word of God is definitely the right answer. To develop a robust, firm faith, to experience spiritual principles for us. Here comes spiritual principle number 1. It is about the topic of leadership and the principle is, lift one another up. Lift one another up. Paulus writes, dear friends, we ask you to show respect to those who lead and go ahead of you, they strive for you, warn you about what is wrong. And you should thank them for their work with sincere love and keep peace among one another. The topic of leadership. Why is the topic of leadership so important in the Bible? But what does it even mean to be a leader according to the New Testament? I want to take us in so that we can exposit and understand this passage in the thought of what the New Testament picture on the topic of leadership is. And we interpret the Bible with the Bible. This is a key passage where Jesus explains to us a bit what it means to be someone who brings others up, a leader in that sense, Matthew 20:25, 26, says Jesus, he called his twelve disciples and said, you know that the rulers of the nations oppress them and the great ones exercise their power over them. Among you it shall not be so. Among us Christians it shall be different. Let him be your servant. Topic leadership, why is this point so powerful? Let us think very simply, what is the job of a leader? A leader actually only has the task of bringing people to places they would not otherwise reach. That is the job of a leader, right? And then Jesus says, you know that among the rulers of this world, among the powers of this world, when they are over you, then you know that people stand on top but push down from top to bottom. And they have power, stand a bit above and use that power against you. He says, you may know that from the world,
Then he says, but among us, among us Christians it should be different, namely whoever among you wants to be great, whoever among you wants to be a leader, that one should be a servant. In other words, the New Testament has a male leadership model or leader model, being a leader, that does not mean being great yourself, but helping others to become great. That is the biblical idea of leadership. Leadership means serving. In other words, the job of a leader is to help someone up, not to push them down, but to make them great. And then Paul says, if you have leaders, now in my words, show them respect, with that he simply says, look, if a leader, a spiritual leader, that you do not use him as a doormat, a little bit like climbing up and I use my leader, but that I also recognize the service of the leader, and so a spiritual principle arises, that you always lift each other up. So if a person recognizes and respects the leader, he automatically also recognizes a person who helps him to grow and become great. And that is quite, quite powerful. And that is very important also for our discipleship development, that each of us is somewhere under spiritual leadership. I myself am one of the leaders here in this house, one of the pastors, at the same time I am also under leadership in various areas. So I am for example myself leader of One District Mitte, One is the youth work in our church association, I am leader of the region, but at the same time I am under leadership from One Nation, as Germany, and that is Sami Schneider, he is my leader. Here in the church I am a pastor, I have a few areas, I am allowed to be the leader. At the same time I am also here under leadership from our leading pastor Tobi, he is my pastor, he is my leader and from the elder board. And you know, recognizing leadership or also leading is then definitely always easy, when it is, yes, the same opinion, when everything is easy and then it says, okay, the leader says that, yes, I think that is good, I go with it, that is definitely really cool and that is good. Important and challenging it can be, though, when it comes out differently. And I had to think back to a situation, when I had just started at the Bible school. I was in the basic level, at the TSE in Erzhausen, when I came here to the church and I was a fire person. And I had the idea, when I had just come into the youth, too much, but back then still with the team and I had the consideration, how do I manage it, that the leadership team grows and that there is growth on a personal level. Then I saw other churches, they have a leadership or leader growth trip. I thought, nice, I will copy that. And then I sat down in the evening for a long time in the Bible there and looked at the thing and then I copied a lot out of it. Good ideas, but also in the exact same language of that other church. And then I start to put it together, spend a few hours with it and then I go to Tobi and say, hey, Tobi, I have discovered something, I have worked out something, a leader growth trip, show it to Tobi. And Tobi of course immediately sees that it was all things that actually had nothing to do with our culture and ideas that fit other churches, did not fit us at all. And then Tobi said, ah, as he always appreciating, how our leader does it, we probably have a lot of work and so, but I think it is good if we also use our own words for that as a church. And then I was already short, I was already a little bit annoyed, because I thought, hey, it was really a lot of work, I submitted myself to my leader. That was my first, pretty much at the beginning, my first
Action, where I knew, I submit myself to the leadership, and if now in hindsight, Sophia can perhaps also tell Armin about the team back then, perhaps also not so bad that he didn't get along back then. But what I want to say with that, leadership is so important, we all stand under leadership. Leadership has the task of bringing us up, making us great, to serve, so when we become more like Jesus, we will also increasingly become serving people, because Jesus himself said, I did not come to be served, but to serve. That is spiritual principle number one, lift one another up, topic leadership. Then comes spiritual principle number two, I have called it, have people in focus. The Bible text, I am now consciously taking a different translation here from the Psychi translation, that helps a bit with the exposition. That says Paul, we speak to you, dear brothers and sisters, rebuke those who do not keep to any order, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with everyone. So in the translation that we read earlier, it said there, rebuke the lazy, or speak to the lazy person's conscience. That is the question, who were actually the lazy ones back then, what was the context? And those were actually people back then who were spiritually a bit off the rails, who said, nice, Jesus is coming back soon anyway, perfect, I quit my job, I don't work at all anymore and I simply live on the costs of the congregation and on the costs of the Christians who still go to work, because they didn't check that Jesus is coming back soon anyway. Can you a bit anticipate, we have next week Sunday fellowship Sunday, we will all bring our grill food, bring salads and then you can imagine that, fellowship Sunday in Thessalonica, that there were people who were spiritually off, hey, I'm not bringing a salad there, Jesus is coming back soon anyway. I'd rather look that somehow Timon brings a tasty salad and let me make a Timon salad good salad. And then Paul says, wait a moment, that doesn't work like that. He speaks to the lazy person's conscience, last Sunday Semmy preached about the team an honest work. That is really strong. And now I want to go a bit into the topic of rebuking. The text is full of exciting things. What does it actually mean when we are allowed to rebuke one another? What is the idea behind it? And we interpret the Bible with the Bible, and the other passage explains Paul, what he means by rebuking. First Timothy 1, verse 5 it says, the goal of all instruction or rebuking is love, that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and an unfeigned faith. So the goal of a rebuke is love. And now comes one of my favorite moments at preaching points. That is quite powerful. Because we have to understand one thing, that the death, that we see here, of death, the death, that we see here, does not simply bless persons. It is not so that God says, ah, I bless that one, ah, I don't bless that one. I bless that one, I don't bless that one. God does not bless persons, but God blesses a place. And this place is under his word. If I am under his word, I am at a place where I stand under the lordship of Christ, and this place is a blessed place. This place, if I am under his instruction, stand under the Scripture, am in his will, remain in him, John 15, then I will become a blessed person. So we have the picture, the Bible, earlier already asked, the pastoral training, whether they had Bibliology, there was the word, the canon, the Bible 66 books, the canon. Canon is another word for rule or our standard. That means, the word of God, the Bible, is our standard, by which we live, to get to know God, to get to know his will. So if I am under these
standard, come under his will, I automatically come into the line of God's blessing. That also means, if I step out of the will of God, then I no longer live in the blessing of God. And that is quite powerful, because we may know situations from life where one asks oneself, does it make sense to do it this way, or does it perhaps make sense if I think about it myself, and so on. But the question is, for example, if I am living a relationship, if I am not in God's will, but according to my own will, then it also brings nothing to go to the prayer team after the service and say, hey, I have a relationship that is not in the will of God, can you bless the request? A Bible study teacher of mine once said, quite a bold statement, but it is actually true, God does not bless sin. And there is something to that, right? God does not bless sin. That means, the topic of right direction, we are drawing the arc. If we learn today, have people in focus, the spiritual principle behind it, if a person has somehow come alongside this trail of blessing, then we have so much love for this person, then we want to love this person so much back into the line of God's blessing, that she is again in the will of God and lives under the will of God and is on her way in his will. So God does not bless a person, he blesses a place, and that is under his word. That is why the Bible also says in another place, if we through Christ Jesus, if we live in his will, through Jesus Christ, the blessings of the whole heaven, so under his will is the blessing of the entire heaven. Ergo, if I am not in his will, I also do not live in the blessing of heaven. And then the question arises for me, if we are then even called upon, even to encourage people, to help the fearful, to stand by the weak, to be patient with all, and then the question arises, how is that to be accomplished in a church like the FTG, just from the number of people that we are here? Last week Semi preached on the topic of purity and honest work. In the service here there were 300 adult persons in both services. Online the sermon had almost 600 views, that means approximately the service, what we did last Sunday, approximately reached 900 people. And then the question arises, if I read this here, ah, let us go to encourage, to the fearful, and build him, do I build that up for myself. Ask yourselves the question, how am I supposed to do that at all? Where do I start? And above all also, where do I stop there? And I also felt that way, maybe that was also only a Joschie problem or thought, but when I read the Bible passage that Jesus says, go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel, and I sometimes had the feeling, the world is always exactly where I am not right now. So somehow I live my life, but I should actually be somewhere else, namely in the world and there proclaim the gospel, until I once checked what Jesus means by that, what Jesus is saying by that is, go into your world and proclaim the gospel. And exactly the same principle, have people in focus, also works with encouraging one another, comforting, standing by the weak, by each person in our church going into their world, into their Connect group. We have so many communities, real for the youth, Ignite, young adults, Souls is that for the women, Man-Up for the men, Seniors for the seniors. And then we have Connect groups and then we have the discipleship cycle and then we have the Alpha course. We have so many different worlds and if each person is in their world and has people in focus, then all people are in focus. There is also this saying, if everyone takes care of their neighbor, then you are also taken care of. So have people in focus, that was principle number 2. Now
comes spiritual principle number 3, and that is, strong is the one who can bless. Strong is the one who can bless. Paul writes, verse 15, see to it that no one repays evil with evil, but always strive to do good to one another and to all others. To understand that, I brought us some stick figures. I always need to get the ladder out of the way so that we can all see them well. Why should one not repay evil with evil? So imagine, we have two stick figures, they're having a great time, they're doing well, they're on the same wavelength, but all of a sudden stick figure 1 comes along and becomes mean. He starts to insult. He starts to insult, he's really mean, he's really nasty, and what happens to stick figure number 2, it doesn't feel good at first, then he slides down, he goes into a minus. Why? Because it really feels mean. I was insulted, so that does something to my worth. I first go through the insult into a feeling of inferiority. Now it is so, these are all the topics from pastoral care, that it of course doesn't feel good for the soul to be in a feeling of inferiority, in a minus, so the soul tries through behavior, as quickly as possible, to go into an overcompensation, that is, out of the minus, to go up, to somehow have a good feeling again, that is, the reaction will be, before the minus he goes into the plus and stick figure number 2, BAM, hits back twice as hard. You insulted

Was ist wichtig? Was gibt es zu tun? Was können wir umsetzen als Christen? Ganz viele geistliche Prinzipien. Jetzt kommt geistliches
