By documenting one's wishes in advance and discussing them with relatives, one relieves them of the burden of decision-making in an emotionally charged exceptional situation and preserves one's own autonomy until the end of life.
Imagine I am torn out of life. I am torn away. Something happens to me. Does my wife know where all my documents are. Does my wife know what needs to be taken care of
The text deals with the question of how one prepares for one's own end of life and the decisions associated with it. The speaker, a pastor, introduces the topic with a real story from the magazine 'Idee & Spektrum', in which relatives without an advance directive for an uncle who was in an accident face the decision about life-prolonging measures. He emphasizes that such situations are emotionally overwhelming for those left behind and that there is often no time for prolonged deliberation. The central appeal is a change of perspective: one should ask oneself whether one's own relatives know in an emergency where documents are kept and what wishes one had. The text advises clarifying one's own convictions in conversation with partners, family, or friends and arranging concrete steps such as advance directives or powers of attorney. It is pointed out that once medical measures have been initiated, they are difficult to reverse. The spiritual dimension is mentioned as part of personal convictions, but the focus lies on practical and legal preparation.

Chaos or a clean slate, what am I leaving behind for my loved ones? That is the theme. Under the theme of the timely ordering of last things and the responsible preparation for the eternal end, eternity. One subtitle is perhaps quite interesting. What am I leaving behind for my loved ones? Because each of us leaves something behind. That is not the question, is it? Everyone leaves something behind. And even if it is only invisible traces in the lives of other people, but one leaves something behind. That is the theme. I have written a little something about myself again, I want to come across a bit more clearly perhaps. And one can see that I have been a pastor in the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches since 1989, first in a congregation in Wetzlar, then lecturer and rector at the Theological College in Ebersbach, for 20 years. Then I worked with a foundation that is affiliated with the Federation, Pro Vita. It deals with life rights questions, life rights questions. That means questions about the beginning of life, for example what is it with artificial insemination, also abortion, these questions, but also with the end of life up to the question of what euthanasia is, a so-called assisted suicide. So with these questions we have dealt. We also published a book where one can read about it again. And I find the title of the book very helpful. It says so nicely, why there are no simple answers to some life questions. And so it is, isn't it? And I believe, we could agree on that and say, that is so, there are no simple answers to many questions when one deals with them, above all when one is affected. Then, that was already mentioned, I am now a pastor in Dautphetal, Marburg Hinterland. And one also reads 63 years old, where did that sound like the transition into retirement. There is already something shining in the background for me. Married, four adult children and in the meantime five grandchildren. That is a very pleasant matter when one is with the grandchildren. They know the saying, nice to see them. And how does it continue? Nice to give them back again. Yes, I notice, these are similar life experiences that we then have when we do so. I would like to start with you, with a story that happened like this, that was printed in the magazine Idea Spectrum a few years ago. And I find this story quite helpful and the question is, what would the uncle find? Sounds strange at first, but the story goes like this. In the middle of a cozy evening with friends, a phone call. The uncle is in the hospital, the nurse found him collapsed in front of his bed. Probably pulmonary embolism and heart attack, several minutes of complete circulatory arrest. My heart also stands still at this moment, at least it felt that way, and immediately it is clear that there are now other priorities. Phone calls with the cousin to coordinate the further course of action. Then the call to the hospital. The duty doctor reports coolly and briefly, your uncle will not wake up, no one knows how long he has been lying there until resuscitation could be started. You must as the person with power of attorney for care decide whether your uncle would have wanted that. Three years earlier I had sat with my uncle and my cousin and had talked to them with angel tongues. They should now, as they were getting older, think about an advance directive. Perhaps they also thought about it, but they did not fill it out. When I am dead, when I am dead, said one, that still has time, the other. One can understand, the two were on average only 75. Now I was sitting there again. A doctor from the intensive care unit had taken the place of my uncle, who was now being kept alive with medical equipment. The relatives looked uncertain as the doctor spoke to us friendly and clearly
about the gloomy therapeutic prospects, but also about the seemingly endless arsenal of palliative options for a mild death in Kändes. In the end, it came down to the message: when should we pull the plug? The question lingers as I then approach my uncle's bedside and see him lying there. Is he breathing? Or is it breathing him? What is quality of life? Where is it ethically appropriate to say, we end this here at this point, because the whole thing is, from a medical perspective, a road with no return. As a Christian, I at least also reckon with the possibility of God's intervention. And who can measure whether a person might subjectively find their own life worth living, even despite the most severe brain damage and near-total blindness? It is of no use. I must decide as the legally appointed guardian after consultation with the family. That is simply this story, as I said, not made up, but it actually happened. One encounters a tragic case. That happens again and again. And then one has no time to decide, but must very quickly consider what is to be done. As I said, this example is not made up, but above all Matthias Kirschner the journalist. And one can plainly feel that the bereaved are simply overwhelmed by this question. Because they must now immediately decide what is to be done. And the question: what are actually the thoughts of the person who is now experiencing these fates, when one can no longer ask them? These are therefore the starting situations. One could say, this is an emotional example. And we are moving on this scale between emotional, but no unnecessary emotionalization. What does that mean? I do not want in any way irresponsibly to stoke fears. Not at all. But it is about simply becoming clear to oneself once what a situation looks like. What can be done, what perhaps cannot be done, it is about this question. But we immediately notice that the confrontation with one's own end of life is never a pleasant thing. It triggers fears. It is clear, the emotions are there. When one deals with it and above all, then, when one perhaps is still in good health. Then someone comes along and says, deal with this topic. There is still time, that is the normal reaction. But behind it often the fear of dealing with this topic. Or also the fear of simply bringing up this topic with the partner, with the female partner, or with the children, or with friends, or with neighbors. And they speak and say, what is it now, if the worst comes to the worst? And so much remains in limbo. So it is about a factual and matter-related confrontation-questioning. But I would like to invite you today also to make a change of perspective. A change of perspective. We will come back to that together. What is the starting point, especially in this example? A phone call that one's relatives are no longer reachable due to an accident or due to an illness. Car accident, fallen, head injured, unconscious, brain damage, all. That is the situation that, as I said, keeps occurring. So that is a starting situation. The second question is then as a relative, where do I look for the documents? The doctor, the female doctor, the hospital calls and says, you are the next relative. Now please look up the following documents. Do you know where you should look? Do you know where all the things are hidden? Often yes. And much more important is the question that is then put to one, especially by the nursing staff. What would your relative want? What was his explicit wish in such a situation? Should life-prolonging measures be initiated or should they not be initiated? And you must become clear about one thing
to be. Once you have initiated it in the hospital, it is nearly impossible to end it in the meantime. So if you say, yes, go ahead, then they will do it. But then you cannot say at some point, we would like to end the whole thing now. Unfortunately, the matter is not that simple. And then you are also caught in such a loop. So that is why in situations like these, you get a phone call, you are challenged to immediately reflect on what is to be done. And now the change of perspective. Imagine I am being ripped out of life. I am being ripped out. Something happens to me. Does my wife know where all my documents are? Does my wife know what needs to be done, what paperwork needs to be handled? Does my wife know where I am a member everywhere and where this membership needs to be terminated? Does she know that? What if something happens to me and my wife at the same time, how do our children get access to what also makes us who we are? For example, also power of attorney for the bank and such things. What about access, about access passwords to various things, to various accounts? It will be an increasing topic. Yes, he wrote down the passwords, but where do we not know? Great. Do the relatives know, so something happens to me and the change of perspective is now, do my relatives know what to do? They are in an emotional exceptional situation, that is clear. And then they are supposed to think about what to do and what to leave alone. What do you need to arrange and do you know above all, what my thoughts are, for example, with regard to life-prolonging measures? Do you know that? Because they will be asked about it. So change of perspective, that is the starting situation. I would like to take some steps this afternoon with you. First of all, also to ask the question, what are your personal convictions? Personal wishes. So the question, what do I actually want? You don't need to make a picture of the slides, I can gladly make them available. It is always a bit awkward when it comes to the quality, yes, I can gladly make them available. So, what are my personal wishes? The second question is, what specifically needs to be arranged? So, which steps are to be taken? And then the question, what role does spirituality play in quotation marks, one could also say faith, at the end of my life. That is also a very essential question. These three questions, if we go through them, you can already see the focus, what should specifically be addressed. That was also the case in the topic presentation, so I will also focus strongly on that. First of all, what are my personal convictions? Do I know what I want when I look at my own end of life? Do I know what I want? Am I clear about it or am I also someone who pushes this question away, who does not think about it? And you will notice again and again, also in the further explanations now, how important it is to have conversation partners. People with whom you can talk about it. It can be the partner, the female partner, it can also be family, it can be friends, it can be neighbors. So people with whom I have a very close relationship, how important it is to talk about it. And in conversation, my own opinion also forms. What do I actually want? Does anyone know what I want? For example, also the question, how would I like to spend the last phase of life? And the much more exciting question is, what should happen if it is no longer possible like that? What should happen if I am, for example, dependent on care? If I can no longer stay in my own four walls? And I know, as a parish pastor, I am in conversation with many people and I know, this is a question that challenges a lot. And many push it away. But what about that? What
What does quality of life mean to me? Or one realizes, what happens if I am no longer able to express myself clearly? There are people who will then make decisions for me. Do they decide in my interest or do they not know? Highly exciting, highly emotional questions. Have I perhaps put that down? Have I ever written it down somewhere? Have I spoken to someone about it? But it is my task to gain clarity for myself. Let me say all the praise, I cannot get out of this. I am called upon to think about these questions. And this is not only a question of advanced age, but again and again anew also for younger people, I must think about it. What happens? So, what is your personal conviction? The most important step is that I come to clear personal decisions. I keep letting my personal situation flow in now and then. I said earlier, we have been married for almost 40 years. We have four children, five grandchildren. But I still have my father, who is 92, and my mother-in-law is 90, turning 91 now. So I also have another side, I am so to speak a sandwich generation, I am so to speak a mother in between. And you will notice right away that I keep trying to incorporate that. My father, for example, was in such a situation that we told him at some point, no decision is also a decision. That is a tough one. If I say, I am not deciding, then it is a decision. It just leads to the fact that at some point the children or relatives have to take on this decision more and then it is decided whether I wanted that or not. How good is it if I know, what did he want, what does my father want? Have we spoken about it? I would like at some point, I would like to find my place in a senior home. That was his wish, to come to terms with it, to arrange it. But again, that was a phase where we struggled very hard about it, struggled together to say, it is important to express that clearly and to say it clearly again. And I keep noticing that it is difficult for some generations to exchange views on this question. What do I actually want? And what happens if it is no longer as I imagine it? And I should be aware that I have a responsibility not only for myself, but also for the other generations. I have a responsibility, for example, for my children. We have included two of our children in the power of attorney for care, if something happens to us. We have spoken with them about it and it has been clear to them, is clear, what happens. With powers of attorney and so on, if we come back to that again shortly. But very important, I have a responsibility towards my children, not only towards myself. And you notice, the last point of the order of external matters, the inner clarity precedes it. So, I must be clear, I must be aware of what I want, what makes up my life, what I wish for and what I do not wish for. If you pause for a moment and ask, are you aware of that? Is that clear? Then we can continue with the next step. The question, how can I order the external matters? First of all just one clarification, if we go through that a bit more precisely. For example the estate, the will. There is organizational matters, cancellation of electricity, water, newspaper, subscriptions, memberships. You will be amazed how much comes together, where there is something to clarify everywhere. A very exciting topic, financial matters, we will deal with that particularly again shortly. Granting powers of attorney, properties, insurance, care in case of need. Just hinted at, life-sustaining, life-prolonging measures. In some cases for some people also organ donation. Probably affects rather the younger ones,
but I also have to think about whether I am a potential organ donor or not. That's a lot, isn't it? A great deal that is lying here. Let's go through it a bit and try to sort it out a little. You can see here, I notice somewhere, here it is correct, over there it is a bit wrong. Now there is the line break, I am a bit confused about that now, but you can be entirely at ease that here it is written correctly. So, general power of attorney, power of attorney, guardianship directive, treatment wishes, will, digital legacy, that is enormously important. The first is the so-called advance directive or general power of attorney. That means, I don't know if you have already done this, yes, it is good that you clearly tell someone or several people, if I am no longer in a position to decide, you step into my place, you step into my place, you may then and must also then decide about me, about my further fate. That is a general power of attorney, stop. General power of attorney, when one reads it that way, it means that one can decide about all things with it. That is not correct. Go, speak with your bank, with your savings bank, and you will find that many banks and savings banks simply and plainly say, we do not recognize this general power of attorney. That is how it is. I recently spoke with a banker who said, it can happen, if one knows each other well personally, that a gray area is found, but as a rule not. If you grant a general power of attorney, but no power of attorney at the bank or at the savings bank, your relatives will not get to the money until all the inheritance matters have been clarified. Parenthesis open, when my father-in-law died, the issuance of the certificate of inheritance took a quarter of a year. Parenthesis close. These are the things one must keep in mind. That is why arrange these things in a timely manner. Once more, a banker confirmed to me three weeks ago that this is indeed the case. One can deviate a little here and there. So advance directive. What happens or who is in there and what do I give up with it? To be distinguished from this is the so-called patient directive and the treatment wishes. A few years ago I started to have a problem with my heart and had to be operated on and was recently also for an operative intervention in a clinic. And then you are asked upon admission, do you have a patient directive? You are asked that. And it states what is to be done and what is to be left alone. That is standard today. Do you have such a patient directive? That means, in it you can stipulate what should happen, if there are complications, if there are any difficulties. Or who is then to be notified or who then steps into the place. Enormously important. But many are not aware that one actually must update these patient directives at least or approximately every two years. Why? I have done that once. There are some who went especially to the day and had it deposited. Some doctors say, we do not recognize it if it is older than two or three years. We are not trying to make you afraid, nothing grandiose. You simply write underneath, I confirm the previously made statements once more with the date and signature. That can be done again and again. But you must expect that such powers of attorney also have a statute of limitations. And depending on which doctor you come to, which hospital, it can become difficult. There are also exceptions, one must not generalize, but please keep that in mind. It is not an automatism. So once more anew. The question about the will. Money is the root of all evil, I almost said. In which families has it already come to a dispute over the money, over the will? For me particularly striking was, when I before
a few years ago I had buried someone. And then after the burial, the will was opened. It had been found, no one had known about it. And then the will was opened. And one of the children said, that was my father's last farewell from the grave. Because it was completely contrary to what had actually been agreed upon, as he had intended. Anger. Endless anger. So clarifying this question is enormously important. It is basic potential, as I said, that even solid relationships can be destroyed. I could give you many examples also from Christian families where it has simply and truly become a real problem. Because it was not openly addressed. So you always notice the question of a discussion or a struggle, that I will have to sit down with my children at some point and say, this is how we had envisioned it. Are you in agreement with that, can you respond to it. Sometimes there are special paths, for example if one of the children takes on the care. Whether one already considers the testamentary differently or whatever. All of this must, should have been clarified beforehand, agreed upon, with those affected. That is also an interesting story, as I did last time, I also gave a talk and asked, who has made the Berlin Will? Do you know that? Berlin Will? Yes, so that simply and truly means that a couple says, we bequeath to each other what we have to inherit and only when the second spouse dies, then it passes on to the children. Everything acknowledged? No

Was hinterlasse ich meinen Liebsten? Was ist Lebensqualität? Was heißt das? Autounfall, hingefallen, Kopf aufgeschlagen, bewusstlos, Hirnschädigung, all. Was würde denn Ihr Angehöriger wollen? Also die Frage, was will ich denn eigentlich? Also, was sind meine persönlichen Wünsche? Zunächst einmal, was sind meine persönlichen Überzeugungen? Weiß ich, was ich will, wenn ich auf mein eigenes Lebensende schaue? Weiß ich, was ich will? Was will ich denn eigentlich? Weiß jemand, was ich will? Was bedeutet für mich Lebensqualität? Was passiert? Also, was ist Ihre persönliche Überzeugung? Was will ich denn eigentlich? Also Vorsorgevollmacht. Also nochmal neu.
